McErlean planning 'step forward' at Rally Finland

Yahoo30-07-2025
Josh McErlean says it will be a "special feeling" to compete at Rally Finland in the World Rally Championship.
The rally is considered one of the crown jewel events of the WRC and is known as the 'Gravel Grand Prix' due to it's fast, flowing roads and iconic jumps.
Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy driver McErlean, 26, is in his debut season in the top tier of the WRC with M-Sport and heads into the event off the back of a solid performance in Estonia.
"Rally Finland is an event I've been looking forward to ever since we got the opportunity to compete at Rally1 level," said McErlean.
"This weekend is about taking a step forward, trusting in ourselves, committing fully to the pacenotes, and starting to bring everything we have learnt together.
"The key will be confidence and rhythm, and I'm ready to enjoy every moment of the ride through the forests."
McErlean and co-driver Eoin Treacy finished ninth in their Ford Puma in Estonia - a rally which consists of similar traits to the iconic stages of Finland.
The Northern Ireland driver wants to build on momentum gained from Estonia and said "it is all part of the learning process".
"Estonia gave us exactly what we needed, a clean rally, strong pace progression, and something to build from," McErlean added.
"From Saturday onwards in Estonia it was challenging running second on the road, and hopefully we can be a little higher up the order this time, but I certainly now know what to expect if we are in that position again.
"Now for me, it's about fine-tuning, pushing where we can, and keeping that upward curve going."
The rally begins on Thursday and the final of 20 stages takes place on Sunday.

The SEC will reportedly implement a 9 game conference schedule, starting in 2026

What was once a rumor has become reality, as Tuesday's breaking news revealed that the SEC will implement a nine-game conference schedule, which will begin during the 2026 season. Again, this was seemingly always in the works, knowing the obvious financial benefits for all 16 conference teams, while making the first two games of the season even more important regarding the College Football Playoff. To start, the SEC will remain divisionless, while each program will now have three permanent rivalries that it will face each season. Furthermore, nine conference games mean each SEC team will face one another at least once every two years, at home and away every four years. Outside of the conference, SEC teams will now be required to schedule one team from the Big 12, Big Ten, or Texas A&M's Week 3 opponent, Notre Dame, every season. This change only enhances the early-season competitiveness, providing the top-tier SEC teams an opportunity to schedule a top program out of three of the four Power conferences, or the Fighting Irish, to beef up their CFP resume. Texas A&M's current three permanent opponents are Texas, LSU, and Missouri, but with an extra conference game, the Aggies will now face Georgia for the first time since the 2019 season, and Kentucky in Lexington for the first time in program history. However, Texas A&M's new permanent opponents will change, and right now, I'll guess that Texas, LSU, and either Arkansas or South Carolina will be the top options, with the Longhorns and Tigers being the undeniable leaders. Looking ahead to the 2026 season, here are Texas A&M's three nonconference games currently scheduled: Sept. 5: Missouri State (1st year in FBS)Sept. 12: Arizona StateNov. 21: Tarleton State (FCS) Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions. Texas A&M senior OL earns spot on 2025 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List

Even with a more challenging schedule than in 2024, many fans and media members believe Texas A&M will field a much-improved team. A key factor will be how well the offensive line performs throughout the season. One player head coach Mike Elko will be counting on for leadership is 2025 team captain and starting tackle Trey Zuhn III. Following his 2024 All-SEC selection and 2025 Preseason All-SEC honors, Zuhn has been named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Preseason Watch List. Zuhn is one of 102 players across nine conferences selected for the 13th annual presentation of the award, which will be announced in December. The banquet will be held on January 21, 2026, in Tyler, Texas. Entering his senior season, the Colorado native is considered one of the top players at his position. At the same time, his versatility has been utilized during the preseason after it was reported that coach Mike Elko and O-line coach Adam Cushing have worked Zuhn out at center, as he is likely seen as a guard in the NFL. The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: Played football at and graduated from a Texas High School and/or currently playing at Texas D1 four-year college Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes, and opinions.
