It said the implementation period for the works will take 36 months, with the contract for the additional lane construction project awarded to a local contractor after undergoing an open tender process.
'However, when the preliminary work on this route is carried out, it will not disrupt the flow of traffic because the two existing lanes in both directions of the affected highway will remain open to all vehicles,' said the statement.
According to the highway operator company, the project is being implemented in phases, starting with Phase One (Senai Utara to Sedenak), followed by Phase Two (Sedenak to Simpang Renggam) and Phase Three (Simpang Renggam to Machap).
The statement also said that the NSE widening project on the Kulai to Sedenak route (Phase One Package A), which began in July last year, is reported to be progressing smoothly according to schedule, while preliminary works for the Kulai to Senai Utara route (Phase One Package B) have also begun on site.
'The high-impact project is expected to benefit nearly 90,000 daily highway users and is hoped to act as a catalyst for more vibrant socio-economic development in the surrounding areas such as Sedenak, Kulai, Senai, Iskandar Malaysia and Pagoh,' according to PLUS.
This effort is a government initiative to address the congestion on the NSE in the southern corridor, which often occurs during peak hours, and is aimed at providing a smoother journey for highway users in the future. Overall, PLUS said that the construction of this additional lane project is for the people's welfare and the economic development of the country. — Bernama

(Bernama pic) BANGI : The International Labour Organization (ILO) is looking to Malaysia as a reference point in its effort to regulate the gig economy, says deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Zahid, who chairs the high-level committee for the establishment of the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM), said the ILO's interest reflected the global significance of Malaysia's pioneering approach in drafting legislation aimed at protecting gig workers' rights. 'This bill, which will be tabled and potentially passed in Parliament in August or September this year, is not just about setting the protection net (for gig workers) in stone,' he told reporters after chairing a roundtable session on the gig economy here today. 'It's the first of its kind focussed entirely on the gig economy, unlike in other countries that simply append it to existing laws.' He said a representative from Malaysia had presented the country's framework at the ILO headquarters in Geneva recently, with the organisation expressing interest in studying Malaysia's experience more closely. Zahid confirmed that SEGiM would be set up under the Prime Minister's Department to oversee the development and implementation of policies tailored for the gig economy, including upskilling initiatives and social protection mechanisms. The commission will work closely with the digital, transport and human resources ministries to ensure gig workers are given opportunities not just for temporary income but also for long-term career development, including entrepreneurship. Zahid also said SEGiM would serve as the main authority for the gig sector nationwide. It would be responsible for ensuring industry compliance with standards and transparent policy execution, while also strengthening self-regulation practices among platform providers, he said. To enhance policymaking and ensure industry feedback is heard, Zahid proposed informal town hall sessions involving gig platform operators, government officials, and other stakeholders. He said such dialogue should happen in a more relaxed setting, reflecting the flexible nature of the gig sector. 'Too many meetings are too formal. I've suggested we adopt a more casual, open format for discussions. No rigid protocols – just honest conversations between those affected and those responsible for the policies.' The establishment of SEGiM was first proposed by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation under the digital ministry. LARUT, July 5 – The Opposition reportedly plans to raise concerns over the Kota Madani smart city project in the upcoming Dewan Rakyat sitting on July 21, citing potential long-term financial burdens. Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the initiative, launched by the government in Putrajaya last month, must be scrutinised to prevent adverse impacts on future generations. 'We will bring this up in Parliament. We don't want today's government decisions to become tomorrow's burden,' he was quoted saying by Utusan Malaysia. Hamzah questioned the necessity of such a large-scale development given the country's current fiscal situation, comparing it to previous government housing projects that did not create long-term debt. 'We shouldn't just roll out a mega project that ends up being unaffordable. Our national debt has already surpassed RM1 trillion,' he said. He argued that building an entire city under current financial constraints risks prioritising short-term interests over national welfare. Hamzah also responded to calls urging him to table an emergency motion in Parliament over the appointment of judges, amid mounting public criticism. He stressed that judicial appointments must reflect fairness and transparency to ensure the integrity of the legal system. 'I don't want there to be a perception that anyone appointed to replace the current Chief Justice is being selected to serve the prime minister's interests,' he added. Last month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim launched Kota Madani megaproject in Putrajaya, worth RM4 billion and set to be constructed in Presint 19. Occupying 41.28 hectares, the project developed by Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd (PjH) under a public-private partnership model will offer 10,000 high-density vertical residential units to house more than 30,000 residents. The first phase of the project is scheduled to begin this September and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

Hajiji launches Sabah shellfish project promising up to RM6,500 monthly income for rural communities
TUARAN, July 5 — The cockle industry has the potential to generate RM34.4 million annually based on an estimated landing of 3,240 tonnes per year and a 7.6-fold return on investment in Sabah, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. In recognising this potential, the state government today launched the Sabah Shellfish Resource and Industry Development Project. Hajiji noted that the initiative will open up opportunities for local economic growth through shellfish products, as well as create new exports avenues via downstream activities such as canning, shellfish sambal, and other shellfish-based food products. 'For the private sector, this is the best time to invest in seafood processing, sustainable packaging, and building Sabah's export chain. This opportunity is not only profitable but also supports a sustainable future,' he said while officiating the project here today. Also present was the chief executive officer of the Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (SEDIA), Datuk Seri Hashim Paijan. Hajiji said this project is also in line with the state government's commitment to making the Blue Economy a key economic pillar for the people of Sabah, while underscoring the government's determination to explore marine and maritime resources to strengthen the state's position in the Blue Economy on the international stage. 'The Blue Economy not only aims to balance prosperity with sustainability, but by 2030, the global value of the blue economy is expected to reach US$3 trillion,' he said. He shared that the collaborative project between SEDIA, the Malaysian Fisheries Department, and the Sabah Fisheries Department is being carried out in two phases. 'The first phase, which has been completed, involved mapping studies and exploration of shellfish resources from October 2024 to May 2025 at potential sites, including Tuaran and Beluran, which served as pilot project sites. 'The second phase, scheduled to begin in 2026, will involve technology transfer and field implementation, with 77 farming lots identified, including 12 lots in Tuaran and 65 lots in Beluran, covering an area of 1,617 hectares,' he said. According to Hajiji, who is also the chairman of SEDIA, each lot will be managed by 10 heads of households, resulting in 770 main beneficiaries comprising fishery entrepreneurs, rural communities, and members of bottom 40 per cent (B40) income group. 'Even if only 40 per cent of the lots operate optimally, participants can still earn a monthly income of around RM4,800 to RM6,500. This means the involved communities will benefit from sustainable income through shellfish farming,' Hajiji said. He stressed that youth will also be trained in modern aquaculture, producing a new generation of Sabah marine entrepreneurs, as the project brings significant improvements to participants' lives and broader benefits to the environment and the state economy. Hajiji emphasised that Sabah will be developed as the ASEAN Blue Ocean Seafood Hub, on par with major producing states such as Perak, Penang, and Selangor. He added that the state government is fully committed to supporting this industry by providing continuous training and modern technology to project participants. — Bernama
