NFL stars team up to surprise Make-A-Wish group at LIDS ahead of Super Bowl LIX

Fox News08-02-2025

As important as "The Big Game" is, what happens in the week leading up to the Super Bowl can create lasting memories.
For 19 Make-A-Wish kids and their families, that's exactly what happened on Friday morning at Locker Room by LIDS in the New Orleans Riverwalk Outlets.
The group, which has been in the Big Easy for Super Bowl LIX week, has had tons of great experiences leading up to the game they will be attending.
But they got a surprise like no other when they were told by Orlando Ashford, Strategic Advisor, Fanatics, that every kid would receive a $250 gift card to spend in the store, which included hats, jerseys, shirts and more from every team in the NFL.
That wasn't all, though, as Ashford announced some special guests with him to help the kids and their families pick out the right gear: Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs, and Arizona State running Cam Skattebo, who is expected to be drafted in April to his new NFL squad.
The group went wild as the three football players walked out, and they got to shopping.
"Make-A-Wish Foundation is incredible and being able to be here to see the smiles on the kids' faces, it's something so simple, like taking a picture, hanging out, shopping, doing whatever. It's pretty special," Wirfs, who said that he has a different perspective now being a father himself, told Fox News Digital during the shopping spree.
Skattebo added: "You never really know who you're going to meet and what smile is going to make the day for you. You don't know and realize what these kids know about you. The fact that you can make their day by just meeting them, putting a smile on your face while you meet them, it could change their lives and how you look at things."
Ashford mentioned during his speech before revealing the players that he has actually retired from his role with Fanatics, but he remains on the Make-A-Wish national board because of how much he loves creating memories for these kids and their families on the sports side.
"For a company like Fanatics, we've been blessed to go to the Super Bowl and have great events like this," he said. "To be able to take a little bit of that energy and pour it into some young people who are dealing with some pretty extreme issues and challenges, we're more than honored to do that as a company.
"The reason I continue to do it is because it's such an energy boost."
Flo Bryan, Chief Corporate Alliances Officer, was all smiles as well, interacting with the kids picking out their favorite player's and team's gear. It's safe to say every event like this never gets old.
"Oh, gosh no," she replied. "You see the smiles on these kids' faces. Just the fact that we're able to grant these kinds of wishes with partners like Fanatics. Since they've come on board as our official sports sponsor, to have them really elevate these wishes like they've been doing is incredible."
Lasting memories were made in that LIDS store on Friday morning, and many more will continue to be made with this partnership for Make-A-Wish and Fanatics, as they continue to bring together some of the best athletes in the world to provide hope and joy for these kids and their families going through challenges.
"I couldn't imagine meeting somebody in the NFL when I was a kid. So, being able to be that person for those kids now is a really cool feeling," Wirfs said.

Chicago Bears player Joe Thuney has Kansas home listed for nearly $1.5M

Chicago Bears left guard Joe Thuney, who recently signed a two-year, $35 million contract extension with the team that could keep him in a Bears uniform through 2027, has his five-bedroom, 5,291-square-foot house in Mission Hills, Kansas, for sale for just under $1.5 million. An Ohio native, Thuney, 32, has been part of four Super Bowl-winning teams in his career during his times with the New England Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs. Expected to serve this year as a trusted and experienced voice in the Bears' meeting room, Thuney was named a first-team All-Pro in each of the past two seasons with the Chiefs. He was acquired by the Bears in a trade in March. In Kansas, Thuney bought the house in 2021 for an amount likely close to its $1.299 million asking price. The ranch-style house, located outside Kansas City, sits just two homes west of the Kansas-Missouri state line. Built in 1967, the house has five bathrooms, an open floor plan, Pedini cabinets in the kitchen, and a lower level with a theater room, bar and wine room. The house also has a four-car garage. Outside on the half-acre property are an outdoor kitchen and a professionally designed, screened porch. On May 7, Thuney placed the house on the market for its current asking price, and it went under contract just two days later. Listing agent Kelly Tucker did not respond to a request for comment.

10 best remaining NFL free agents the Ravens could target after June 1

10 best remaining NFL free agents the Ravens could target after June 1 Post-June 1 signings don't affect the compensatory pick formula, meaning Baltimore can wait and sign free agents later this summer to build more draft capital for the next season. The Baltimore Ravens have one of the NFL's best rosters and a loaded offensive unit looking to expound on the record-setting performance from 2024. The Ravens weren't overly active during the first wave of NFL free agency, but they added DeAndre Hopkins to the passing game and Jake Hummel to the special teams. Baltimore retained Ronnie Stanley, Patrick Ricard, and Tylan Wallace, while the restructuring of Marlon Humphrey created $13 million in salary cap space. Even with the inactivity and loss of Brandon Stephens, Malik Harrison, Patrick Mekari, Josh Jones, and Chris Board, the team is still in the midst of a Super Bowl window. The team is halfway through seven OTA sessions, and has a three-day mandatory mini-camp scheduled for the middle of June. The Ravens are big on compensatory picks, and could choose to wait until after June 1 to add more talent to the roster. Post-June 1 signings don't affect the compensatory pick formula, meaning Baltimore can wait and sign free agents later this summer to build more draft capital for the next season. With June 1 just days away, we're looking at ten free agents the Ravens could sign. Brandon Scherff, G Another potential addition for depth, the veteran offensive guard had a pass block win rate of 93.8% last year, which ranked 14th among guards, according to ESPN. Za'Darius Smith, Edge Last season, with the Browns and Lions, Smith had nine sacks and 38 pressures. Matthew Judon, Edge Another former Ravens defensive end, Judon, had a 15.5-sack season but only 5.5 sacks in 2024. Jedrick Wills Jr., OT Wills could be in line for a position switch like Mekhi Becton, and he's still a solid pass blocker who has a career pass block win rate of 92.0%. Justin Simmons, S Simmons signed with Atlanta last offseason following eight years in Denver. Last season, Simmons recorded two interceptions, seven passes defended, and 62 total tackles in 16 games played in 2024, with his PFF grade ranking 113th out of 170 safeties. Julian Blackmon, S Blackmon had three interceptions in 2024 and seven over the past two seasons. Kyzir White, LB A liability in the passing game, White is an astute run stopper. In his second season with the Arizona Cardinals, White started all 17 games, making 137 total tackles, one interception, 2.5 sacks, nine tackles for loss, and eight quarterback hits. CB Rasul Douglas (BUF) The former Eagles, Packers, and Bills cornerback excels in zone coverage and can be a playmaker for a Ravens team looking for closers on the outside. According to ESPN, Douglas was below average in coverage DVOA metric this past season but ranked third in the league in 2023 among qualifying cornerbacks. Douglas lacked big plays, with only five passes defended in 2024, but had at least 13 in each of the three previous seasons. Asante Samuel Jr., cornerback If Baltimore wants to move Marlon Humphrey back to the outside cornerback spot, the Ravens could sign Samuel, who has experience playing in the slot. Samuel Jr. allowed under a 63% completion percentage when targeted in his first three seasons. Mike Hilton, cornerback Hilton has a natural feel for playing in space as a coverage defender, and in the slot, he offers the aggressive mentality to tackle and blitz on the edges.

Remembering Demaryius Thomas' best moments with the Broncos

After the Denver Broncos announced Demaryius Thomas' election to the team's Ring of Fame on Tuesday, we take a look back at five of the best moments (plus two personal honorable mentions!) from the career and life of DT. 5. 4th and 1 (@ Detroit; Week 3, 2015) This play against the Detroit Lions showed Thomas' ability to go one-on-one against great cornerbacks. Hall of Famer Peyton Manning threw the ball up on 4th-and-1, and Thomas went to go up and get it and then had the wherewithal to turn and go the rest of the way, en route to a Broncos win. 4. Revenge (DT hauls in two TDs; 2013 season opener) After one of the most heartbreaking losses in the history of the Broncos against the Baltimore Ravens in the 2012 playoffs, Denver wanted revenge on the defending Super Bowl champions. The Broncos began their historic offensive campaign in 2013 with a bang. Manning threw (and tied an NFL record with) seven touchdown passes in a 49-27 smackdown of the Ravens. Thomas was on the receiving end of two of those scores, vanquishing the demons from the year prior. 3. Thomas' one-handed grab vs. Chiefs OBJ or DT? Against the Kansas City Chiefs, Manning lobbed a pass high into the back of the end zone, where Thomas made a one-handed stab before tapping both his feet for a touchdown. 2. Thomas and history After Thomas's heroic effort in the 2011 playoffs, the "changing of the guard" happened in Denver, and the quarterback reins were handed to Manning. In Manning's Broncos debut against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Thomas caught Manning's first Denver touchdown pass, a bubble screen that exhibited Thomas's speed and breakaway ability in traffic (see 10:16 mark of the second video). Advertisement Before Tom Brady and Drew Brees were breaking the all-time touchdown record every week, there was Manning. In Week 7 of the 2014 season, Manning broke the all-time passing touchdown record, stealing the record from Hall of Famer Brett Favre; Touchdown Nos. 509 (the record-breaker) and 510 went to Demaryius Thomas against the San Francisco 49ers. 1. Overtime This list wouldn't be complete without Thomas's signature moment, which came during the AFC wild card playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Overtime rules changed prior to the 2011 playoffs, where before, if a team kicked a field goal, it was a sudden-death win. Under the new rules, if the first team to possess the ball kicked a field goal, the opponent would have a chance to tie or win the game. However, if the first team to possess the ball scored a touchdown, the game would end. Advertisement The Broncos won the overtime coin toss, and Denver took possession on their own 20. On the first play of overtime, quarterback Tim Tebow faked a handoff and threw to a streaking Thomas downfield, where he stiff-armed two Steelers on his 80-yard gallop. This would be Thomas's signature career moment. Honorable mention 1: Denver's heartfelt tribute to DT Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports It's always strange to write about players like this, deceased players who you grow up rooting for. Demaryius Thomas is one of those players for me; someone I cheered for, celebrated and ultimately, remembered when he died. As many Broncos fans may remember, we lost Thomas way too soon, at the age of 33. I was newly married at the time when DT passed at his home in Georgia. The Broncos' next home game after Thomas' death was against the Detroit Lions. My wife, who had just begun her journey in life married to a rabid Denver Broncos fan, had no idea why this game was so emotional to me. The Broncos and the city of Denver showed up in an incredible way to honor Thomas; his number was painted on the sideline, the team (and several players across the league, such as DeAndre Hopkins) wore 88 stickers on their helmets, and 88 jerseys were everywhere throughout Mile High. At the beginning of the game, Denver took a delay of game penalty, where wide receiver Courtland Sutton stayed on the sideline. Detroit declined the penalty, and Sutton took his place where Thomas was supposed to line up. Late in the game, then-safety Justin Simmons intercepted a Lions pass and went right to the 88 on the sideline. It was just one of many heartfelt tributes to a man that meant so much more than football in the eyes of a city that loved him as much as he loved us. Honorable mention 2: Thomas' competitive side I was 13 years old during the miraculous autumn of 2011 that Broncos fans came to know as "Tebowmania." The Broncos came from behind in nearly every game, no matter how big the deficit. Then-quarterback Tim Tebow had probably his toughest test yet against the Chicago Bears that fall. Early in the game, Thomas had dropped what was sure to be a wide-open touchdown, and the Broncos went to the sideline without scoring. I remember Thomas on the sideline, where he was distraught. Not known to us during the game, Tebow was mic'd up. Tebow came over, put his arm around DT, and encouraged him: "Hey, guess what," said Tebow to Thomas, "you're about to go out there and catch the game-winner here in a minute." Advertisement Later in the game, with 2:08 on the clock, Thomas caught a touchdown that pulled the Broncos to within three at 10-7. Through a miraculous turn of events, the Broncos tied the game, went into overtime, got the Bears to turn the ball over, and won the game, 13-10. That always spoke to me, as the type of competitor DT was. Thomas came back from dropping a potential go-ahead touchdown to catching a touchdown that got Denver back in the game. Thomas was a beloved athlete and community leader in the Denver area. We will not soon forget his always-smiling face, and the impact he had on and off the field.
