A deep dive into ‘Dazzling Dakota' at Augustana University
Federal law enforcement crews in Brandon
Inside the Center for Western Studies on campus, you'll find 'Dazzling Dakota,' a larger-than-life solo collection that highlights the seasons in South Dakota.
'This gallery is unique because it is all one artist,' Augustana University student, Elizabeth Toso said. 'And that is kind of rare as I've seen from our previous shows. I'd also say that the variety of artwork that Mecca has in this gallery is really impressive.'
Mecca Rutherford of Sioux Falls is the artist behind these stunning landscapes, a skill she's been crafting for decades.
'I always wanted to get to landscapes, but they were more complex to create a landscape versus just painting a flower or the flowers. So it was a progression, I had always longed to get into landscaping, but I wasn't as skilled at it at first,' Rutherford said.
At age 11, Rutherford knew she wanted to pursue art. However, it was about three years ago that she got back to the easel full-time.
In 2023, Kami Miller with the Center for Western Studies at Augie saw Rutherford's work at Artists of the Plains.
'She would be a great artist to have for a solo show for a number of reasons. As you can tell in the show, her pieces are very large, which is good for a large gallery space like this,' Miller said.

The project would take months of planning with canvases spanning up to six and eight feet long.Miller says the size of Rutherford's paintings offers an immersive experience.
'What I love about that piece is you can stand and look at it and feel like you're brought right into that moment,' Miller said. 'I'm sure almost every South Dakota resident has had that experience of having a perfect South Dakota sunset.'
Rutherford spent nearly a year creating the collection. And if you look closely, you'll see why.
'I'm actually sort of sculpting these specific areas of the foreground or the sky or whatever part that I'm sculpting. So it's almost like they're sculpted first and then they're painted,' Rutherford said.
For the collection, Rutherford drew inspiration from many areas including Good Earth State Park in Sioux Falls.
'They just love their memories there, it draws on memories. A number of people said they've grown up in rural, they grew up on a farm. They did a lot of baling. So the hay bales really speak to them,' Rutherford said.
Toso helps set up different exhibits for the center. She says this collection brings back memories from her childhood.
'I just have this specific memory of sitting in the car and the sun was setting and you could just see the sun shining through the clouds. And it's almost that exact image driving through the plains, driving through hayfields, cornfields and like those hay bales even. Like the details are all there. And I feel like I've been there like in that painting,' Toso said.
Connecting memories like Toso's to Rutherford's oil paintings is something she loves to hear as an artist. At the front of the center, you'll find a guest book for viewers to leave comments.
'With the size of the work and the fact that it's your home state, I think that you will find that it's very inspiring and I think you will find that it will bring you comfort and hope and peace,' Rutherford said.
The Sioux Falls Art Council helped sponsor the supplies for this collection. In March Rutherford will perform a live painting demonstration for the public at the center free of charge.

This Instagram account roasts bad versions of Texas
Comedian Kevin Miller has seen the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to representations of Texas. Mostly the ugly. The big picture: Miller is the voice behind the viral Instagram account @uglytexases, which spotlights hilariously bad versions of the Lone Star State. Zoom in: Miller, 47, launched the account in 2018, and it's taken off in recent years. He's an instructional designer and longtime improv comedian who spent more than 20 years in Austin before moving to Amsterdam for love. How it works: Even abroad, he keeps the account active — sourcing images from what he calls "vigilant citizens" and adding his signature dry commentary. He checks the account every morning for submissions, usually getting between one and five. His favorites? The images that are everywhere but often go unnoticed, like the David McDavid dealership stickers that have been slapped on thousands of cars across Texas. That sticker now serves as the account's thumbnail image. What they're saying: "I don't actually have a mission here," Miller tells Axios. "I'm just glad it makes people a little more aware of what Texas actually looks like."

Von Miller says Broncos are like an ex-girlfriend with a new guy
In a recent episode of the Pardon My Take podcast, and in a move that may shock absolutely no one, former Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller spoke about missing being with his old team. "Being away from Denver -- and like, you know at first, it's like, 'Yeah, I'm on a new team,' as time goes by, you just miss those days," Miller told PMT. "I had spent so much time in Denver, man. They're doing so many good things with that organization, building the facility, new stadium, everything is going crazy. They've got a good team now. It's like, 'Damn,' it's like seeing your old girlfriend with the new guy and she's happy. ... Now she's starting to get in shape and she's starting to look good now, she's bouncing back. And I'm like, 'Dang.'" Miller has not shied away from revealing how much he loves the Broncos, recently saying Denver will be his home when it's all said and done. Miller had the best years of his career in Denver, where he won Super Bowl 50 with the Broncos in 2015, earning the game's MVP award. Miller will have another chance to face the Broncos as an opponent when his Washington Commanders and Denver meet in Week 13 in a Sunday Night Football showdown. You can view Miller's full comments about the Broncos below (the interview starts around 1:43:00). We miss you, too, Von! Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Woman Sells Couch on Facebook Marketplace, Then Gets Urgent Call From Buyer
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A woman sold a couch, but soon after received a frightening and unexpected call from the buyer, leaving her speechless. Darcy Miller, known on TikTok as @darcycass, received an urgent call shortly after selling her couch on Facebook Marketplace from the buyer. The buyer discovered a cat inside the couch. As it turns out, Miller's cat managed to sneak her way into the couch through a tear underneath. She became a stowaway, riding her way to the buyer's home silently and without anyone realizing. Miller rushed to the buyer's home as soon as she heard the news. Her July 28 Instagram video shows her attempting to lure her cat out of the couch, asking why she would do that. And because of the unfamiliar location, her feline hesitated. Newsweek reached out to @darcycass via Instagram for additional information and comment. Miller calmly and carefully talked to her cat, reassuring her that there was nothing to fear. She brought along kitty treats, hoping they would do the trick. The cat's eyes peeked out from under the couch. She looked at the strange room and retreated to her hiding space. But when she heard the crinkle of the treat bag, she took a leap of faith and came out. Miller praised her for being a "brave girl" when she finally stepped all the way out from her hiding spot. Viewer Reactions The Instagram video reached over 292,000 views as of Friday, leaving viewers cracking up over the unfortunate situation, and after knowing Miller successfully got her cat back. "Did you tell them the sofa looks great and she was just the quality control making sure it got there safe?" joked one viewer. Another added: "Sofa on Marketplace: $50. Sofa w/a bonus cat inside: Priceless." A third person said: "Poor baby went for a nap, woke up in a whole new world." What viewers find even crazier is that this wasn't the first video they saw involving couches sold on Facebook Marketplace and cats. Newsweek previously reported on the other incident, when a buyer found a cat crawling out of the couch at 3 a.m. This time, the buyer kept the cat, as the seller said she did not belong to them.
