Merrie Monarch Festival named in honor of King Kalākaua
We are speaking of Kalākaua St.
Farrington, named after a Hawaiʻi governor
David Kalākaua was elected King of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1874, becoming its seventh ruling monarch.
Serving for nearly 17 years until his passing in 1891, King Kalākaua is credited with both significant gains and losses.
He was known for his parties and lūʻau, for being a gracious host, for his love of entertainment, but also for his drinking.
Robert Louis Stevenson wrote about the king's ability to drink several bottles of wine and then go on to attend official functions as if he didn't.
Unfortunately, the King suffered from heart, kidney, and liver problems, passing away from Bright's Disease while abroad.It was because of his flamboyant personality that King David Kalākaua was given the nickname, the 'Merrie Monarch.'
But another one of his nicknames was the 'Renaissance King,' credited for bringing cultural arts out from behind closed doors.
Following the arrival of the missionaries to Hawaiʻi, the 'heathen song and dance', referring to chant and hula, began to be forbidden.
But King Kalākaua, being a product of a bicultural upbringing, understood the value of both the Western and Hawaiian worlds.
When the king celebrated his coronation, he invited 7 hula teachers and 50 or so dancers who performed over 260 chants and dances.
This began a renaissance of Hawaiian culture, which, today, is alive and well.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Hernandez Govan, the man accused of orchestrating the death of rapper Young Dolph, is set to appear in court for day three of his trial Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, Angela Arnold, the girlfriend of Cornelius Smith, was the first witness to take the stand. She told the court that to her knowledge, Smith never had direct contact with Big Jook and that he would communicate with Govan to send and receive messages. She also testified she saw Govan at a carwash hours after Young Dolph's death, when Smith picked up a cellphone from Govan he had left in the white Mercedes used in the murder. Various Memphis Police Investigators were then called to testify in court, along with cell phone records. According to the investigators, they went over calls and text records of Goavn, Smith, and Big Jook in the months leading up to the murder and afterward. They say Smith appeared to have several outgoing calls to Govan. But in cross-examination, Govan's defense attorney explained the reasoning for their communication, saying, Govan supplied Smith with various types of pills, and Johnson talked with him because he was an aspiring rapper. Another investigator who testified said detectives went to the airport to execute a search warrant on Big Jook's phone and asked if they could speak to him, but he refused. For this reason, Dua's look for the occasion was met with a bit of criticism. And now, almost exactly three years later, she's shutting down fans' misinformed anger. In a new video for Harper's Bazaar, Dua looked back on some of her past looks, including her memorable wedding attire. 'This outfit kind of caused a little bit of a stir online,' she said, before providing a bit more context. 'The dress code was white,' she said, grinning as she proved her point. 'From all the pictures, you can see that everybody's wearing white, so I don't know why I got so much stick for it.' As you can see from the photos, the dress is also almost entirely sheer, and Dua wondered if maybe that was part of the problem, too. 'I think also because I was kind of quite naked for it as well,' she joked. Of course, the big issue with wearing white to a wedding is that it might upset the bride or groom. But in Dua's case, there were two grooms, and one of them, Simon Porte Jacquemus, is a globally known fashion designer who happened to have made the dress in question. 'Simon, who was getting married, — Jacquemus — he designed the dress, so it was at his request that I wore this dress to his wedding,' she said, 'and I absolutely loved it.' There you go, people. If the groom wants you in a sheer white gown, you wear a sheer white gown. This whole thing also has me wondering if Jacquemus might design Dua's wedding dress when she ties the knot to her fiancé, Callum Turner…we'll have to wait and see. Post Malone recently collaborated with Kim Kardashian's SKIMS for their latest campaign, promoting a new line of menswear. The rapper took to social media to share some photos from the new campaign, which has a Western theme. In one of these photos, he could be seen wearing nothing but underwear, thus showing off his tattooed body. SKIMS is the latest brand to partner with the artist, whose previous collaborations include Doritos, Stanley, and Oreos.
