There was a brief moment of drama in the final hour when England skipper Stokes proposed ending the contest early, with both Indian batters approaching individual milestones. But the offer was turned down, allowing Jadeja and Washington to reach their hundreds.
'Definitely it was up to the boys, but we thought they batted brilliantly. Both of them were in their 90s, so we thought they deserved a century,' Gill said at the post-match presentation.
India were reduced to 0 for two early in their second innings after openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan fell without scoring, but the middle-order stood firm under pressure.
"With our batting effort, the past couple of days I think we were put under a lot of pressure. But I think the way we responded, especially after losing those two early wickets, never easy but a very brave effort," Gill said.
"It's all about taking the wicket out of the equation. Day five wicket, the ball is doing, something is happening, every ball is kind of an event. So you just want to play ball by ball and want to take the game as deep as possible."

The 2-1 scoreline, currently in favour of England, could have gone either way, and while India would be disappointed not to have it in their favour, they still have a bright shot at scoring the equaliser in London. Very little has separated the two sides since the opening Test in Leeds, but England have been the better side at closing the crucial moments, which have had a bigger impact on the complexion of the match. A new-look squad under new captain Shubman Gill was always going to find it challenging in this part of the world, but the slightly inexperienced side, undergoing a transition of sorts, gave a very good account of their skills and temperament in crunch situations. If anyone had predicted them to be this competitive and alive in the series after four Tests, they would have welcomed it with arms wide open when they left home in the first week of June. Almost two months and 59 sessions of hard-fought cricket later, the new coach-captain combination of Gautam Gambhir and Gill can well return home with a hand on the trophy, and a well-deserved scoreline of 2-2. He stood by his coach, didn't quite understand "what the fuss was about," and termed the entire episode as unnecessary. "What happened yesterday, I thought, is just absolutely unnecessary. I mean, it's not the first time that we were having a look at the wicket. And we have, we have been here for almost, I think two months. And like I said, a coach has every right to be able to go close quarters and have a look at the wicket. And I didn't think that there was anything wrong with that. I actually don't know why, why the curator would not allow us to go have a look at the wicket," said Gill. From a boy who used to come up with the choicest words during the media interactions, Gill has grown into the job and become far more expressive and candid with every session. He doesn't mind a laugh, takes the criticism on the chin and even while keeping cards close to his chest, drops substantial hints. The coach is a completely different personality when it comes to press conferences, and even otherwise, but the partnership is coming along nicely and could well be a defining one as the team gets ready for bigger challenges in the near future. By no means was the England tour a cakewalk. They have had to grapple with injury issues, availability concerns of their trump card Bumrah, movement of players in the batting order, quick-fixes to add depth, but one challenge at a time, they have dealt with it in their own fashion and stand just one push away from what will be a "significant" achievement. I mean, if you look at the kind of cricket that we have played, sometimes the scorecard of the series, as in where we are in the series, doesn't determine that. And the series has been a great learning curve for me. You know, there are some things that only experience, that you can only learn from experience. Before the series opener, he had said that he wanted to be the best batter in the series. After the Leeds defeat, Gambhir defended his young players and was not ready to single out any individual or moment responsible for the result. India's Fifth Test Playing XI: Karun Nair to replace Shardul Thakur; Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah miss out
London: India is likely to go with an extra batsman in Karun Nair for the all-important final Test of the India-England series. He will be coming in place of pace all-rounder Shardul Thakur, who played the fourth Test. The pace department is also expected to see a couple of changes. Jasprit Bumrah and Anshul Kamboj will make way for Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna, with Mohammed Siraj being the spearhead. Meanwhile, Dhruv Jurel will replace the injured wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant, who was ruled out of the series because of fracture of the foot. In case India go with this combination, bowlers Kuldeep Yadav and Arshdeep Singh would finish the tour without getting a game. With the pitch having a layer of grass, left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep once again failed to make the cut. And that is also the reason India bolstered their batting line-up. On the match eve, there was a point of view that Bumrah might play his fourth Test of the series in Oval despite the team management's workload considerations and the pre-decided plan to play him just three Tests. That was not to be. After the team management resisted the temptation to play Bumrah, they threw their weight behind the youngish pace attack led by Siraj. At the end of the first Test that India lost, coach Gautam Gambhir was asked if they would think of giving Bumrah an extra Test, four instead of three, in case the series result was on line. 'There will be no compromise on work load,' he had said. Meanwhile, Bumrah's absence gives Siraj a chance to lead the pace bowling for the second time in the series. In Birmingham, where Bumrah sat out, Siraj didn't just take the responsibility on his shoulders but also mentored Akash Deep, the man of the moment in that game as he picked up a 6-for in the second innings and 10 overall in India's solitary win so far. Nair's inclusion is the most interesting selection choice. With Nair and Sai Sudharsan both expected to be in the playing XI, it will be interesting to see who bats at No.3. In the first match of the series both Sai and Nair were in the side but it was the left-hander from Tamil Nadu who got the nod. But in the second and third Test, when Sai was dropped because of team combination reasons, Nair batted at No.3. Sai took that spot again at Old Trafford where Nair was left out of the playing XI in the fourth Test. With India going with 5 bowlers – three specialists and two all-rounders – Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar- they will have their work out. No bowler can have an off day. The rationale of bringing Karun in the team is Shardul's lackluster bowling. Since Shardul wasn't too effective in Manchester, India thought of adding a pure batsman to shore up their batting ranks in London. Meanwhile, England have already announced their playing XI and will be without captain Ben Stokes as a shoulder injury ruled him out of the match.
