Rajnath Singh, Hegseth discuss ways to augment defence ties with focus on expanding industry collaboration
Both leaders discussed a wide range of issues, ranging from long-term cooperation in the defence sector, including training and military exchanges, to expanding industry collaboration. They agreed to further build upon the momentum of this critical and mutually beneficial partnership across all its pillars such as interoperability, integration of defence industrial supply chains, logistics sharing, increased joint military exercises and cooperation with other like-minded partners. Singh appreciated the unwavering support extended by the US to India for its fight against terrorism. He complimented the US Secretary of Defence for his dynamic leadership, which has propelled defence cooperation between the US and India to new levels. Mr Pete Hegseth invited Shri Rajnath Singh to the US for an in-person meeting to take the bilateral defence partnership forward.
In a post on X, Shri Rajnath Singh stated that the discussions were held to review the ongoing and new initiatives to further deepen India-US defence partnership & strengthen cooperation in capacity building. He looked forward to meeting the US Secretary of Defence at an early date.
This was their third telephonic conversation since January this year, when Mr Pete Hegseth was confirmed as US Secretary of Defence.
Meanwhile, S Jaishankar met US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon, where he highlighted the strategic importance of India-US defence ties, describing them as 'one of the most consequential pillars' of the bilateral relationship.
Speaking during the meeting at the Pentagon, Jaishankar said, 'I am here with you at the Pentagon because we believe that our defence partnership is, today, truly one of the most consequential.'
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth expressed enthusiasm about the growing defence partnership between the two countries. He highlighted the integration of US defence systems into India's armed forces and outlined the goal of expanding industrial cooperation and co-production networks.
'The US is very pleased for the successful integration of many US defence items... building on this progress, we hope we can complete several major pending US defence sales to India, expand our shared defence industrial cooperation and co-production networks, strengthen interoperability... and formally sign a new framework of US-India major defence partnership,' Hegseth said.
He added, 'We are eager to work alongside you to realise our shared goals. They are deep and ongoing. The visit today marks an important milestone in the ongoing series of high-level engagements between our two great countries.' (ANI)

Delhi to trial run cloud seeding to combat smog menace
New Delhi [India], July 2 (ANI): In a bid to tackle the city's worsening air pollution, Delhi's Environment Minister Majinder Singh Sirsa announced a trial run of artificial rain through cloud seeding, set to commence between late August and early September, with five tests planned to assess its efficacy against smog, particularly during Diwali and September. 'We have been successful in securing permission for artificial rain through cloud seeding... We will run the trial between the end of August and the first week of September. We will conduct five trials to learn if it could be efficient against the smog that collects during Diwali or in September,' he said. On May 7, the Delhi cabinet on Wednesday passed a historic decision to conduct cloud seeding, also known as artificial rain, in the national capital to mitigate pollution. Pollution has been a serious concern for the state for some time, and to help curb it, the cabinet has taken a significant step in partnership with IIT Kanpur, according to a member. The activity is planned to be conducted in the last week of May, after the cabinet has obtained all the necessary permissions from various departments and stakeholders. The exercise will be conducted in partnership with IIT Kanpur, and their Aircraft, a Cessna, will be used for the purpose. The Delhi government plans to conduct five trials in the outer area of the national capital. The cost for one-time rain will account for 66 lakhs, and the operational cost will be 55 lakhs. The total cost for the entire trial plan can go up to 2 crores 55 lakhs. The aim of the Delhi government is to mitigate pollution in the national capital to achieve its goal of a Viksit Delhi. Pollution remains a pressing concern in Delhi, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) often reaching very poor levels. Although several projects have been undertaken in the past to address this issue, none have provided a lasting solution to Delhi's pollution problem. (ANI)

AICWA urges PM Modi to enforce ban on Pakistani artists' digital presence in India
New Delhi [India], July 2 (ANI): The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has issued a formal appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding a complete and permanent ban on the digital and media presence of all Pakistani nationals and entertainment-related entities in India. In a statement shared through its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the association expressed concern over the reappearance of Pakistani actors and media channels on Indian digital platforms. AICWA cited the active social media presence of Pakistani celebrities such as Mawra Hocane and Yumna Zaidi, along with several Pakistan-based entertainment outlets, calling it 'an emotional assault' on the families of victims of terrorism. 'This is not merely a digital appearance, it is a direct insult to the sacrifice of our martyred soldiers,' the association said. It referenced terror attacks including 26/11, Pulwama, Uri, and Pahalgam as part of its appeal, reiterating its long-standing position that Pakistan is responsible for continued cross-border terrorism. AICWA also raised objections to statements allegedly made by Pakistani public figures following India's recent Operation Sindoor, stating that 'instead of showing remorse, several Pakistani artists have shamelessly spoken against India.' Highlighting the cultural disconnect already in place from Pakistan's side, AICWA pointed out that Indian films and content remain banned in Pakistan since the Pulwama attack. The association questioned why Indian platforms should allow any exposure to Pakistani artists under these circumstances. The appeal further stated, 'India has diplomatic and cultural relations with nearly 200 nations across the globe. Cutting off Pakistan completely will have zero negative impact on our economy or entertainment industry.' The organisation called for a nationwide digital blackout of Pakistani social media accounts and media channels, a ban on all future collaborations involving Pakistani citizens across Indian media, OTT platforms, and advertising and a permanent cultural disconnect with Pakistan, as a tribute to India's armed forces and martyrs. The Pahalgam attack, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians and injured several others, was widely condemned by Indian officials and has significantly heightened public sentiment against cross-border terrorism. Bangladesh tribunal sentences former PM Sheikh Hasina to 6 months in prison in contempt of court case
Dhaka [Bangladesh], July 2 (ANI): The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), a Bangladesh court designated for the trial of international crimes, on Wednesday sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to six months in prison in a contempt of court case. A three-member tribunal led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder gave this order. Earlier, A Y Moshiuzzaman, a senior lawyer, was appointed as amicus curiae (friend of the court) by the ICT for a full hearing of the contempt of court case. The Chief Prosecutor filed a contempt of court complaint against Sheikh Hasina and Awami League leader Shakil Alam Bulbul on April 30, in light of their statements regarding the case related to the July mass uprising incident. The formal charges stated that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was the mastermind behind the inhumane acts, such as crimes against humanity, murders, and the burning of bodies across the country during the movement to overthrow the government in 2024. These crimes were organised on her orders. 'There are 227 cases against me, so I have a license to kill 227 people', Sheikh Hasina said in an alleged audio clip that went viral a few months ago. Later, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police conducted a forensic examination of the conversation and found its authenticity. After that, a contempt of court application was filed with the tribunal. The prosecution said that Sheikh Hasina did not appear in person or provide an explanation through a lawyer even after the notice was published in the newspaper. In this situation, the tribunal can now punish those involved by the law. Earlier in the day, anti-national and anti-independence forces had staged a mock trial against Sheikh Hasina in a kangaroo court formed to implement their political objectives in Bangladesh, the Awami League said in a statement. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took over as the head of the interim government after Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5. (ANI)
