Alpine skiing-Italy's Brignone still not sure she will be fit for Olympics
MILAN :Reigning World Cup overall champion Federica Brignone cast doubts over her participation in next year's Winter Olympics on home snow in Italy two months after she suffered serious injuries.
The 34-year-old, one of Italy's leading medal hopes at the Games, fractured her left leg and tore knee ligaments when she crashed into a gate during a race in the Italian championships.
"I would like to say that I will be present at the next Olympics, but as of today I don't know. I am working for that too, but my health comes first of all," Brignone told reporters in the medical centre in Turin on Tuesday.
"It is difficult to make any predictions, because there are many steps and we don't have any precise schedule," she said, adding that she remained confident and positive.
Brignone, who is walking with clutches, underwent surgery after the crash in April.
"As of today we can rule out a further operation, Federica had a major injury but the ACL is fine," said Andrea Panzeri, president of the medical staff of Italy's winter sports federation.

Hard to celebrate PSG's Champions League win over Italian colleagues, says Donnarumma
Gianluigi Donnarumma found it difficult to celebrate Paris St Germain's Champions League win over Inter Milan with so many Italian teammates on the other side, the Italy keeper and captain said on Wednesday. Donnarumma was a spectator for much of Saturday's final in Munich, with PSG strolling to a 5-0 win, and after the final whistle was seen consoling Inter's shell-shocked players. The former AC Milan keeper has now joined up with Inter's Alessandro Bastoni, Federico Dimarco, Nicolo Barella and Davide Frattesi at Italy's training camp ahead of their upcoming World Cup qualifiers and was asked what he said to them. "Nothing. There was a real heartfelt hug with those teammates after the game and I'm happy about that," Donnarumma told reporters. "I also struggled to enjoy the Champions League victory to the fullest because on the other side there were my brothers with whom I share a lot. "Here, we haven't spoken about that match, not even a few jokes. We only spoke about the next two games and giving everything together." Donnarumma, who has one year left on his PSG contract, has been linked with a move to Inter and was again asked about those media reports after his agent was seen at Inter's headquarters on Wednesday morning. "I didn't know he was at Inter, I'm fine in Paris and the club will decide on the renewal or not," Donnarumma said. "I'm ready for anything, but now my first option is Paris because I'm fine, the fans love me and the team loves me. I hope to stay there for many years." Donnarumma has not always convinced Italian fans and media, despite his penalty shootout saves leading to Italy's Euro 2020 triumph, with the keeper often criticised for errors. Now, however, he feels he is in the best form of his career, and a lot of that is down to PSG manager Luis Enrique. "When you return to your own country and you're not welcomed as you deserve, it's not easy," Donnarumma said. "Now I'm happy to have found confidence, balance and mentality. I am happy to have convinced all Italians. "With Luis Enrique I found balance on everything. He gave me a lot especially on a mental level." Italy begin their qualifying campaign in Norway on Friday, before hosting Moldova on Monday, having failed to reach the last two World Cups.

AC Milan legend Franco Baresi backs Massimiliano Allegri to make Rossoneri competitive again
AC Milan legend Franco Baresi believes players carry the responsibility to be ambassadors for their clubs on overseas tours. PHOTO: AC Milan via Getty Images SINGAPORE – After recording their worst league finish in 10 seasons, AC Milan are in dire need of a restart, one that is set to begin in Singapore. The Rossoneri, who sacked coach Sergio Conceicao after missing out on European football next term with an eighth-placed league finish in the recently concluded season, will have a familiar face at the helm when they embark on their pre-season tour in the Republic in July. Veteran coach Massimiliano Allegri, 57, has returned to the club and the Italian's first assignment will be a friendly against Arsenal at the National Stadium on July 23. It is part of the Singapore Festival of Football, which will also feature an Arsenal-Newcastle United friendly at the same venue on July 27. The return of Allegri, who guided the Rossoneri to the Serie A title in 2011 before winning the league and Coppa Italia five times apiece and reaching the Champions League final twice with Juventus, has sparked optimism among the Milan faithful, including legend Franco Baresi. In a phone interview with Singapore media on June 4, the former defender told The Straits Times that the Festival of Football will be 'a great opportunity to restart with great enthusiasm'. 'Allegri is a coach with fantastic experience, so he will be able to work well with the team, with the players, to give them the kind of serenity and conviction to get back, to be competitive again,' said the 65-year-old Italian via a translator. Their past season has been marked with instability, despite beating arch-rivals Inter Milan 3-2 in January's Italian Super Cup final. Stefano Pioli, who guided Milan to the Scudetto in 2022, was dismissed last summer. He was replaced by Paulo Fonseca, who lasted six months, before Conceicao got the sack after just five months. While he declined to assess the recent season, Baresi, who is also Milan's honorary vice-president, said: 'With the new coach, there will be a lot of willingness to get back on our feet and start the new season in the best way. 'These are games that are very useful... for the players to get to know the coach, for the coach to get to know the players, and for everybody to get to know any new players who might arrive in the summer. 'So, this game is very important to start to play well together and understand what the ideas of the new coach will be... and to get ready for the new season in terms of finding good team morale and teamwork on the pitch , and also to be physically ready.' Changes are afoot in the Milan camp, with players being linked with moves. Several media outlets, including the BBC, reported on June 4 that their Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders has agreed terms with Manchester City ahead of €55 million (S$80.9 million) move. Meanwhile, Real Madrid icon Luka Modric will reportedly join Milan after the June 14-July 13 Club World Cup. While Baresi stopped short of confirming the 39-year-old Croat's arrival, he did pick out players from the current side whom he admires and hopes will set the National Stadium alight on their first visit here. 'I like players of great technical ability and quality. When I think of children who go to the San Siro and watch the team play , the ones who would probably excite them most are Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic, who can really thrill with their skills and velocity ,' said the one-club man, who played 719 games for Milan across 20 seasons. The model pro, who also has 81 caps and was part of Italy's World Cup-winning side in 1982, also chimed in on the responsibility of players to represent their club and country well while on overseas duty, after two Manchester United players were seen flashing middle fingers during the club's post-season tour of Asia. He said: 'We always need to prove that we are professionals at the end of the day, because we have a huge responsibility towards our millions and millions of fans across the globe. So the most important thing is to represent the club with our best.' Tickets for the Singapore Festival of Football start from $108 and are available on Ticketek. Fabregas shuts down Inter speculation and vows to continue at Como
Cesc Fabregas pledged his immediate managerial future to Como on Wednesday amid increasing speculation that the Spaniard is the main target for Inter Milan to replace the recently departed Simone Inzaghi. Fabregas - former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder - has attracted the attention of several top clubs after leading promoted Como to a 10th place finish in Serie A last season. Fabregas is also a shareholder in the club where he ended his playing career. "I really believe in Como's long-term project, I arrived here as a player and I'm very, very happy because I can work here the way I want," Fabregas said at the SXSW (South By Southwest) conference in London. Italian media said that Inter want to speak to Fabregas after Inzaghi left by mutual agreement on Tuesday, days after their 5-0 defeat by Paris St Germain in the Champions League final, and with the Club World Cup less than two weeks away.
