Regarding your editorial 'The Social Security Iceberg Gets Closer' (June 20): In reality the iceberg has been tearing open the hull of our 'ship' ever since the Social Security trust began drawing down its fund reserves in 2021. The fund is filled with special issue securities that it presents to the Treasury for payment. Since we are already running a budget deficit, this payment is made possible by Treasury's issuing more debt. All the fund has done is add a step. This creates the illusion that, for now, the problem of payroll-tax revenues running below benefits payments is being dealt with. It isn't. The day after the fund runs out will be no different than the day before. Either way, more water will have flowed into the hull, thereby ushering in the day that the ship sinks.

US military to create two new border zones, officials say
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The Pentagon will create two new military zones along the border with Mexico, U.S. officials said on Wednesday, a move that allows troops to temporarily detain migrants or trespassers. President Donald Trump's administration has hailed its actions along the border, including the deployment of active duty troops, as the reason for a sharp decline in crossings by undocumented migrants. Trump made voters' concerns about immigration a cornerstone of his 2024 re-election bid. The Pentagon has already created two military zones, but only four people have been temporarily detained on them, a U.S. official said. A new "National Defense Area" will be created covering about 250 miles (402 km) of the Rio Grande river in Texas and administered as a part of Joint Base San Antonio, according to the Air Force. The U.S. officials said the other military zone would be administered as a part of Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Arizona. The zones are intended to allow the Trump administration to use troops to detain migrants without invoking the 1807 Insurrection Act that empowers a president to deploy the U.S. military to suppress events such as civil disorder. As legal deterrents to border crossers, the zones have had mixed results. Federal magistrate judges in New Mexico and Texas dismissed trespassing charges against dozens of migrants caught in the areas on grounds they did not know they were in a restricted military zone. However, some 120 migrants pleaded guilty to trespassing in the first Texas zone in May and federal prosecutors obtained their first two trespassing convictions for the New Mexico zone on June 18, according to U.S. Attorneys' Offices in the two states. Around 11,900 troops are currently on the border. Illegal border crossings fell to a record low in March after the Biden administration shut down asylum claims in 2024 and Mexico tightened immigration controls.

Incumbent Willsboro supervisor loses Primary to newcomer
WILLSBORO — A challenger won the Republican Party race for Willsboro town supervisor against the incumbent in Tuesday's Primary Election. Darren Dickerson garnered 62 votes, compared to six-term supervisor Shaun Gillilland with 47 votes. Dickerson will be the Republican nominee in November's general election. Gillilland filed an independent nominating petition as the Willsboro-Reber Party and will still be on the Tuesday, Nov. 4 general election ballot as the independent candidate. Gillilland first took office in 2014 and is the chairman of the Essex County Board of Supervisors. Essex County had several Republican Party primaries Tuesday. Town of Elizabethtown Town Clerk/Tax Collector: Marietta Brady, 15 votes; Patti Doyle (winner), 74 votes. Town of North Hudson Town Council (two seats): Republican: Brian DeZalia (winner), 38 votes; Larry Koller (winner), 35 votes; Frank Darwak, 11 votes. Town Justice: Sally Wachowski (winner), 32 votes; Deborah Duntley, 20 votes. Town of Ticonderoga Town Justice: Thomas Dedrick, 135 votes; Brenda Wells, 85 votes; Thomas Ruby, 91 votes; Philippe LaPerle (winner), 176 votes. Town of Wilmington Superintendent of Highways: Louis Adragna (winner), 49 votes; Cameron Grady, 35 votes; Darren Lawrence, 7 votes. Clinton County Town of Schuyler Falls Town Council: Conservative: Shelia Baker (winner), 4 votes (write-in). Franklin County No local offices were on the ballot.
