St. John's makes the most of its second chance, wins DCSAA girls' lacrosse title
In a D.C. State Athletic Association girls' lacrosse championship rematch, No. 2 seed St. John's got its revenge on No. 1 Georgetown Visitation, 14-10. A second-half scoring surge by the Cadets halted a potential Cubs three-peat at Catholic University Sunday afternoon.
Just like last season, both programs entered the DCSAA tournament after disappointing losses in their respective conference tournaments. With those defeats still fresh, both teams were eager for another shot at postseason hardware. Last season, the Cubs beat St. John's, 9-6, to earn their second consecutive state crown.
The Cubs led 7-5 at halftime, just two quarters away from a three-peat. But the Cadets came out strong after the break, scoring three unanswered goals — two from sophomore Riley Kimmel — to take a one-goal lead within the first three minutes of the second half.
St. John's (14-7) kept Visitation's offense scoreless in the second half until 10 minutes remained, building a lead that was strong enough to deliver a championship.
'This means everything," said Cadets junior Claire Shannon, who was awarded the game's most valuable player award. 'We lost last year in our state championship, we lost our conference championship this year, and when most teams would turn the corner and be ready for the season to be over, we rose to the occasion, and I owe it all to the team.'
Visitation junior Mackenzie Rassas and senior Quinn Murray had two goals each in the first half, helping the Cubs (12-9) take their lead at the break. But the Cadets' scoring run in the third quarter put them in position for the upset — Visitation scored three goals in the fourth quarter, but St. John's kept the Cubs at a distance until the final whistle.
'Our theme of the game was just '12 minutes.' Twelve minutes at a time," Shannon said. 'Sometimes, with underclassmen and a less experienced team, it's easy to get caught up in the nerves and the pressure of the moment. So, I just kept reminding them to treat each quarter as if it is its own game, focusing on working as hard as you can for those 12 minutes.'
With just five seniors on the St. John's roster, and one sidelined due to injury (Meg Chen, a University of Chicago signee), Coach Hillary Fratzke credited the resilience of her seniors.
'I will say, the senior class, from a cultural standpoint, has meant absolutely everything," Fratzke said. 'These seniors have bought into the idea of 'it's not about me.' It is really about everyone around me, and how we can lift one another. And the more that they bought into that, the more that you saw it as a result on the team.'

Former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb reacts to Jalen Hurts skipping Trump White House visit
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and reigning Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts divided fans when he chose to skip the team's celebratory White House visit in April. Hurts was one of several Eagles players who chose not to go, alongside AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, Jalen Carter and Brandon Graham. But as the quarterback, Hurts' absence garnered particular scrutiny. Hurts told reporters on May 20 that he didn't go because he "wasn't available." Former Eagles star quarterback Donovan McNabb, who says he's mentored Hurts since coming to Philadelphia, gave his reaction to his protégé's absence in an interview with Fox News Digital. McNabb also suggested that Hurts' absence was based on a decision. "I don't have a problem with it at all. I agree, I totally agree with him and the decision that he made, it's a grown man decision, and he stuck with it," McNabb said. "And for him, his focus again is to get himself ready to possibly get back to another Super Bowl." McNabb added that he would have made the same decision as Hurts. Hurts also raised eyebrows again when he attended the Met Gala the following week after missing the White House. Still, the vast majority of the Eagles' roster and coaching staff did attend the White House and celebrated with Trump, as well as the president's daughter, Ivanka. Those players included star running back Saquon Barkley. "It's everybody's choice," McNabb said of the players who went. "You don't harp on anybody else's decision of what they made, it's a decision. It's a personal decision that he made, for both, for Jalen and for Saquon," McNabb said. "And again, after you do your visit or whatever it may be, you get right back to focusing on the task at hand and seeing if you can have that opportunity to be invited back to the White House." When the Eagles won the Super Bowl back in 2018, the team decided not to attend the White House. Trump rescinded the invitation to host the Eagles after several players said they would not participate in the visit because of his previous criticisms of national anthem protests. The Los Angeles Dodgers visited the White House several weeks before the Eagles did, to commemorate their World Series title. Mookie Betts, who skipped a visit in 2019 with the Boston Red Sox, attended this year. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Because Sovereignty sat out the Preakness Stakes last month, it precluded the potential for the horse to become the 14th Triple Crown winner in the event's history. Following the Kentucky Derby, Sovereignty's trainer Bill Mott told reporters that the first priority was the well-being of the horse. "Of course, you always think about a Triple Crown, and that's not something we're not going to think about," Mott said (via ESPN). As such, Journalism, which finished second in the Kentucky Derby, went on to win the 2025 Preakness Stakes, creating a showdown with Sovereignty when both horses take part in the Belmont Stakes among a field of eight horses. The 157th running of the Belmont Stakes is set for Saturday at the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and post time is 7:04 p.m. ET/4:04 p.m. PT. The 2025 Belmont Stakes will be broadcast live on FOX on free TV and on cable on FS1.
