AFLW pre-season to begin before fixture release

Yahoo06-05-2025
AFLW players will start pre-season training without a fixture in place but the league's boss maintains the schedule is on its way.
Women's clubs and players have been frustrated by the delay in releasing the fixture for the 10th season of the competition.
The men's schedule is often released weeks after the previous season has ended, and sometimes more than four months before the start of the next campaign.
The semi-professional nature of AFLW means players need more notice to ask for time off from work and study.
The only game locked into the calendar is the season-opener between Carlton and Collingwood, to take place at Ikon Park on August 14.

"One of the key things about the fixture announcement is this is the first of the fixture announcements," said Payne when confirming the Blues-Magpies clash.
"We intend to complete the fixture work by the end of this month and release that so the players and the clubs will know what's happening.
"The work that we're doing is to make sure that we're optimising that crossover between the men's and women's competitions."
Collingwood star Ruby Schleicher, who works in a presenting role for Fox Footy, was empathetic towards players who don't have such flexible schedules.
"I'm very fortunate with my work that footy comes first, and they're very understanding of that, so I'm able to move things around," Schleicher said.
"Obviously the earliest we can get it (the fixture) is is ideal, but at the same time, we prepare the same way we're going to prepare for anyone.
"It doesn't sort of change the system that we want to play as a football club."
The AFLW are hoping the Carlton-Collingwood season opener will bring back memories of a famous night in 2017 when the Ikon Park stands were full to watch the league's first match.

Ken Hinkley responds after Collingwood premiership player linked with Port move

Outgoing Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley has attempted to quell reports around Beau McCreery joining the Power having fended away questions regarding trade rumours. Hinkley is stepping down at the end of the season with the side unfortunately out of finals footy contention. And the outgoing coach has hit back at a number of reports around Port Adelaide making a play at Collingwood's McCreery on a four-year deal. The 24-year-old has been a pivotal part of the Magpies' success this season with his latest absence coinciding with Collingwood's dip in form. McCreery is contracted until the end of 2027, but reports suggest a number of AFL clubs are looking at the midfielder. Although Hinkley, who will depart at the end of the season after 13 years, admitted it was news to him if McCreery was being targeted by his club. 'I have not seen Beau at the footy club,' he said. 'If he has been here, I might not recognise him, but I think he's trying to get over a hamstring to get back and ready to play football for Collingwood.' McCreery has been in great form for Collingwood having helped a stellar midfield, featuring Nick Daicos and Steele Sidebottom, in 2025. Although he has only played one game of footy since round 15, which was the loss against Fremantle. But as an outgoing dig at the media, Hinkley hit back at the reports over the AFL trade merry-go-round. On Tuesday night, St Kilda coach Ross Lyon took aim at some 'half-baked' reports about his players having tried to shut down the speculation. On Wednesday, Lyon stopped his press conference short having suggested the questions directed at him shouldn't be about list management ahead of the game against Essendon on the weekend. And Hinkley has also moved to rubbish most of the rumours out in the AFL ether. Hinkley said most of the speculation never comes to fruition having also dealt with his fare share of rumours during his time as coach. 'Everyone gets linked everywhere, don't they, this time of year when there's an opportunity,' he said. "What I do know about footy is that about one per cent come true.' Ken Hinkley remains coy on Wanganeen-Milera links Meanwhile, Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera is the talk of the AFL world at the moment with St Kilda doing everything they can to keep him at the club. Although Wanganeen-Milera has been linked with a move back home to Adelaide. Wanganeen-Milera is yet to confirm his future and Buddy Franklin suggested the St Kilda star could be on the move with decisions late in the season normally leaning suggesting a player wants a change of scenery. 'I think he's gone, I think he's definitely going,' Franklin said on his podcast Buddy & Shane Show. 'For me, why would you hold out so long? This has taken all year. If the decision was to stay, it would've happened weeks ago I would've thought.' And while Hinkley remained coy on Wanganeen-Milera's specific situation, he also hinted the lack of clarification could also suggest the player might be considering his options in the AFL. Although the Port Adelaide coach of 13 years claimed he wasn't going to weigh-in on any player. 'History would tell you that long term, late in the season, those decisions do seem to go a certain way,' Hinkley said. "But I'm not going to make any prediction on any of that because I have no information and I can't help you in any way to predict the outcome. I do know that the young man that everyone's talking about, I can understand why everyone's talking about him.'

Luke Hodge calls out Nick Daicos detail in message to Magpies fans amid form slump

Hawthorn legend Luke Hodge has moved to calm the storm brewing amongst Collingwood fans having claimed the Magpies' form slump could be down to a number of younger stars missing from the side. Collingwood have now lost four of their last five games and have slipped to third on the AFL ladder. While a top two position seemed close to a certainty a few weeks ago, the Magpies are now only four points ahead of GWS in eighth place. And to make matters worse, Hawthorn handed Collingwood a 65-point thrashing last Thursday. Fans were stunned to see Nick Daicos start on the bench, which followed suggestions coach Craig McRae needed to rest the star who had only missed a couple of games this season. Despite not starting, Daicos still played 76 per cent of the game. McRae admitted the side put in another poor performance, having lost to Brisbane the previous week, and was sure the team could turn it around. And AFL great Hodge feels the concern around Collingwood's dip in form could be down to some older legs in the team needing a rest ahead of finals footy. Collingwood entered the season as the oldest team on average in the competition and have proven many of the critics wrong with their early season form. However, there is no doubt the tempo the team has played with in recent weeks has dropped. Scott Pendlebury, 37, has been one of the stars of the show alongside Steele Sidebottom in the midfield. The veterans have been winged by Daicos, Bobby Hill and Beau McCreery who have contributed energy and speed into the midfield. Although with some of the younger stars missing in recent games, and Daicos starting on the bench against the Hawthorn, Hodge feels the intensity drop can be expected. He pointed to McRae's decision to start Daicos on the bench as an example of the coach managing his stars with fresh legs expected back soon. 'The football they've put out there over the last month, five weeks, it's not up to the standard we've expected,' Hodge said on SEN Radio. 'They do have an older list, we understand that, but it's amazing when you get to the end of the season. You have one week off, you come back with energy, mentally freshen up, physically freshen up. 'But also, what we've seen out there of late – Bobby Hill hasn't been there, Beau McCreery hasn't been there, Nick Daicos started on the bench. So, if you talk about, 'they looked slow on the weekend', if you swap over Hill, McCreery and Daicos, and you've only got one of (Ned) Long, (Tom) Mitchell, Steele (Sidebottom) and (Scott) Pendlebury in there, that speed, that chase pressure, that energy can turn around pretty quickly." Luke Hodge isn't concerned over Magpies dip Hodge said Collingwood were already called out earlier this season after they lost the opening game, before bouncing back to win six straight games. And he expects a similar turnaround soon. 'If I was a Collingwood supporter, I'd be getting through to the end of the home and away season, freshening up, getting these blokes back in," Hodge added. 'What we did see after the opening round when they looked slow, they looked old and we all cancelled them out, they found a way to freshen up and they found a way to play their best football, which is all based around energy. They do need to improve in a few areas, but I think a few inclusions will definitely help them.' McCreery is set to return from a hamstring injury in the coming weeks, while Jeremy Howe will miss the pivotal clash against the Crows this weekend due to concussion. Howe was left unconscious after a sickening head clash with Hawks star Jai Newcombe in the opening minutes of the defeat. McRae apologised to the fans after the defeat with the team needing to get back to winning ways to avoid dropping further down the ladder. 'I apologise to our Magpie a disappointing performance, you can't sugar-coat that,' McRae said. 'We owe Steele Sidebottom more than that too; he's a legend of the footy club. We're hurting,' McRae began (It was) just a lack of system, and then a lack of fight — sometimes at the same time, which leaves us really vulnerable. Anyone that's watched us over the last few years would say: 'They're basically glued together by not tonight."

Suns job has 'invigorated' me: ex-Kangaroos coach Shaw

Invigorated Rhyce Shaw has laughed off a possible return to AFL coaching as he prepares to make history with Gold Coast's AFLW side. The former North Melbourne mentor will become the first person to be a full-time head coach of both leagues when the Suns begin their season against West Coast in Perth on Thursday. It's Shaw's first head coaching role since 2020, when he took personal leave before parting ways with the Kangaroos. Two other AFLW coaches have led men's programs before, but Darren Crocker (North Melbourne) and ex-Giants boss Alan McConnell (Fitzroy) both did so as caretakers. Lured to the Suns by former coach Stuart Dew - the pair had worked together at Sydney - Shaw has spent the last four seasons in various development roles. He had impressed in an interim capacity at the Kangaroos in 2019 but struggled with the demands of the role during the COVID-19-hit season, his side losing 14 of their final 15 games in a 3-14 campaign. There was a natural hesitancy to return to a head coaching role when a four-year deal was put to him earlier this year. "I've bloody loved it; this group is just an amazing group of players, so coachable," Shaw said of the decision. "They want to do the right thing, train as hard as they can, do the best they can. "That makes me a better coach; it's really refreshing for me. "One of the best decisions I made, to get back into it. "I couldn't thank the club enough for the support. It's really invigorated me to be a better coach again." Our AFLW season starts NOW! 🔥3 DAYS TO GO - It's time to back the W! "Not at all; very happy where I am," he said. "I love coaching this group; haven't dream about doing anything else." He replaces Cameron Joyce, who was axed after Gold Coast finished 17th last season. The Suns will blood five debutantes against the Eagles and manage a long injury list. "There's a lot of new things; training, game plan, coaches, players," Shaw said. "It's all pretty fresh. This is the beginning of our journey."
