Breakfast. It's a surprisingly controversial meal.
Not everyone can stomach food first thing in the morning, but research shows that making the right choice can set you up for the day ahead. According to Dairy Farmers, 85 per cent of Aussies say they feel more energised and productive after a high-protein breakfast, but 40 per cent still skip it - and it's likely because finding convenient and tasty protein options can be tough.
But what about dairy-based protein drinks? If you look at TikTok right now, it's fair to say they're having a moment. The category has grown a whopping 88 per cent in the past three years, and there's a heap of videos of creators sipping protein milk post-workout or testing out new flavours.
Dairy Farmers' Senior Nutritionist Rachael Adams says getting just 30g of protein at breakfast can help you stay fuller for longer, support energy and mood, and reduce snacking later in the day.
'Protein is the most satiating nutrient – meaning it's the best at keeping us feeling full and nourished,' the expert tells Yahoo Lifestyle. "It helps to regulate appetite by increasing our satiety hormones, reducing the hunger-related hormone, ghrelin, and slowing how fast food leaves your stomach.'
And Rachael says that dairy protein, in particular, can be a top choice.
'Dairy is one of the highest-quality protein sources available – it's not only a complete protein (containing all nine essential amino acids our bodies can't produce on their own), but also highly bioavailable, meaning our bodies absorb and use its protein more efficiently,' she says.
'In addition to being an excellent protein source, dairy is also nutrient-dense – providing important nutrients including calcium, B vitamins (B2, B5 & B12), iodine, phosphorus and potassium.'
The key, Rachael says, is to tune into your body's 'natural hunger cues'.
'If you're not hungry first thing in the morning, forcing yourself to eat breakfast isn't necessarily the right thing to do,' she advises. 'What matters more is making sure your first meal of the day is packed with healthy and nutrient-dense foods, especially protein to help keep you feeling fuller for longer and reduce cravings.
'It's less about the time of day and more about what you eat for your first meal – whether it's at 7am or 11am depending on your lifestyle and hunger levels,' Rachel adds.
That's where Dairy Farmers' new Protein Smoothies come in. They're a grab-and-go option for those wanting to get their 30g of natural dairy protein at any time of day, with no added sugar and without chowing down on anything too heavy.
The smoothies, which retail for just $4.50 at Woolworths, are designed to fuel busy mornings or satisfy that post-workout chocolate milk fix, and come in three delicious flavours: chocolate, banana honey and mixed berry.
The flavours are certainly proving a hit on TikTok, with content creator Namrita Nikita declaring the banana honey smoothie tastes like 'a liquid banana paddle pop' and telling fans the mixed berry version was 'really, really nice'.
The chocolate version got her top marks, with the TikToker giving it a '10 out of 10' for taste.
You can get your 30g of protein in many different ways, and Rachael says that a 400ml serving of your favourite Dairy Farmers Protein Smoothie is one option.
Other suggestions from the expert include three eggs scrambled on toast with a dairy milk or soy milk coffee; 200g of Greek yoghurt topped with muesli, fruit and natural peanut butter; a baked bean and cheese toasted sandwich made with seeded bread with a dairy milk or soy milk coffee, or a smoked salmon and spinach three-egg frittata.
The good thing about milk? Rachael says it's 'naturally rich in the good stuff'.
'It's a wholesome, no-nonsense option for people who care about real food that works hard for their health,' she says. 'And compared to other high-protein options like steak or protein powders, milk is also affordable, making it an accessible, everyday way to get high-quality nutrition.'
Sydney gym-goer Xander Cross, 33, is one of those who's been embracing 30g of protein at breakfast for the last six years and he credits it for changing him mentally and physically.
'I've always had a smaller frame and found it challenging to gain muscle and size. On top of that, consistently eating enough protein throughout the day to support my fitness goals has been difficult,' Xander tells Yahoo Lifestyle. 'As someone who's very active in the gym, increasing my protein intake became a key priority to support muscle growth and help me reach my goals.'
Xander admits that before making the change, he 'didn't have a structured or balanced diet'.
'I would often skip breakfast or grab something convenient, usually with little to no protein. This then carried through to the rest of my meals for the day,' he explains.
'After shifting my focus, especially at breakfast, I began making much more conscious and healthy decisions about what I was eating, starting by choosing a protein and building my meals around it.
'Physically, I noticed real changes,' he adds. 'My energy levels at the gym improved, and I started seeing more positive results from my workouts.
'Mentally, I felt more clear-headed throughout the day, along with the peace of mind that I was fuelling my body. But the biggest mental benefit has been knowing that I'm taking care of myself properly – our bodies are like machines, and we need to fuel and maintain them to function at our best.'
When Xander finds himself running late in the morning, he now grabs a Dairy Farmers Protein Smoothie and some fruit on the go.
'I recommend this to anyone who struggles to get organised in the morning,' he says. 'When you build your breakfast around a protein source, it becomes much easier to ensure you're starting your day with a balanced, nourishing meal.'

Radishes Are the Detoxifying Veggie to Rediscover This Summer

Summer is synonymous with salads—ideally, as crisp, colorful, and refreshing as possible. But when the usual arugula, cherry tomato, carrots, and cucumbers, starts to feel same-old, there's one crisp vegetable that shouldn't be forgotten: radishes. In season from May to September, they lend a vibrant touch to every dish. They're not just tasty, either. Rich in vitamin C, antioxidants such as lutein and zeaxanthin, and minerals such as potassium and calcium, radishes provide vital nutrients. Not to mention: They're also surprisingly hydrating and detoxifying. In fact, they've been used for ages in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine thanks to their purported therapeutic properties. The beauty of radishes Radishes, or Rapahnus sativus, are the roots of a herbaceous plant from the Brassicaceae or cruciferous family, which also includes broccoli, kale, and Brussels sprouts. Native to Asia but found growing wild and cultivated in Europe and America as well, radishes can be eaten root to tip; the tender, young leaves of the plant are delicious in salads and soups. There are a lot of different types of radishes, in a range of shapes, flavors, and colors. Think: white like daikon, super-spicy Japanese radish, purple radish, watermelon, and even black. However, you're probably most familiar with the bright red radishes that are common in North America and Europe. The benefits of radishes When eaten raw, the benefits of radishes make them a welcome addition to our dietary repertoire. Though low in calories, they're high in fiber, which is ideal for providing a sense of satiety and stimulating digestion and the intestinal tract. They possess a low glycemic index, have a mild diuretic effect. Composed of 95 percent water, they're helpful for fighting summer dehydration, and for detoxifying and protecting the liver. They're also high in potassium, which helps protect against high blood pressure. Radishes are rich in the antioxidant vitamin C, which can help stimulate collagen production, nourish the skin, and strengthen the immune system. They also have antifungal properties due to the presence of the RsAFP2 protein, which according to one study, can also fight Candida Albicans, also known as yeast or thrush. Who shouldn't eat radishes? If you're suffering from gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux, or colitis, you should limit your consumption of radishes as they may worsen their symptoms.

GLP-1 Drugs Like Ozempic Are Widely Popular. Here Are Side Effects You Should Know About

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - JANUARY 13: Ozempic is medicine for adults with type 2 diabetes . Wegovy is ... More prescribed for long-term weight loss in adults and children. Both contain the active ingredient semaglutide, on January 13, 2025, in Sydney, Australia (Photo by Steve Christo - Corbis/Corbis via Getty Images) Glucagon-Like-Peptide-1 Agonists, like Ozempic, have become extremely popular for weight loss. In fact, about 1 in 8 Americans have taken a GLP-1 drug at some point in their life, according to KFF health. Drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro are highly effective at curbing pounds. Participants that took Tirzepatide, which is the active ingredient in the weight loss drug Zepbound that is also a GLP-1 agonist, lost 15-21% of their body weight over a 72 week period, according to a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine. These drugs can result in dramatic weight loss because they delay emptying of food from the stomach, which keeps people full for longer periods of time. In addition, they act on hunger centers in the brain to prevent and curb cravings. In general, GLP-1 agonists are safe and well tolerated, but there can be some side effects that are important for everyone to know. Not everyone will experience side effects and some patients may experience some while others experience completely different ones. By far, the most common side effects patients will have will be gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation. Nearly 1 in 5 people taking Ozempic can have nausea, according to WebMD. Many of these side effects can be managed by decreasing the dose, taking the drug with food, drinking water to stay hydrated and eating slower. More rare but serious gastrointestinal side effects include stomach paralysis and intestinal obstruction. Because GLP-1 agonist drugs delay emptying of food from the stomach, food can get backed up in the stomach, preventing transit into the intestines which can paralyze and weaken the stomach. This can lead to a life-threatening condition known as bowel obstruction because food is not passing through the intestines in a timely manner. Signs and symptoms to look for would be severe abdominal pain, inability to pass gas or have a bowel movement, vomiting and bloating. If this starts to occur, you need to go to the emergency room immediately to be evaluated by a doctor. This condition can lead to malnutrition, dehydration and even death if not treated appropriately. Rarely, GLP-1 agonists can cause a condition called acute pancreatitis, which is when your pancreas gets inflamed. When you have pancreatitis, you typically have severe abdominal pain that radiates to your back. This can also be life-threatening and you need to go the emergency room as soon as possible if you are experiencing such symptoms. These drugs can also cause gallbladder problems, such as gallstones or even inflammation of the gallbladder which is known as cholecystitis. Patients with gallbladder issues typically have upper abdominal pain, and if the gallbladder is inflamed, can also have a fever. If you have a history of gallbladder disease, you should not take GLP-1 agonists. Ozempic and Wegovy, both of which are GLP-1 agonists, can also result in vision changes. These drugs stimulate the pancreas to release insulin, which then decreases blood sugar levels. Changes in blood sugar can affect the shape of the lens of the eye which can result in blurry vision. Older patients are more at risk for this side effect, and vision changes can last for a couple months. The terms 'Ozempic face' and 'Ozempic butt' are not truly side effects of GLP-1 drugs, but rather consequences that occur from rapid weight loss from the face and rear end. Fat around the face and butt are crucial to maintain skin volume and elasticity. When that fat is lost quickly, the skin on the face and butt can hang and sag, resulting in the condition 'Ozempic face' and 'Ozempic butt'. These conditions can be treated or mitigated by decreasing dose, adequate hydration, increasing protein in the diet and with procedures like dermal fillers and other skin tightening procedures. Studies performed in rodents have shown a link between GLP-1 agonists and the development of a rare type of thyroid cancer known as medullary thyroid cancer. The good news is human studies have not currently shown a significant risk between these drugs and the development of thyroid cancer. In fact, among over 14,500 participants that were studied across multiple studies assessing the risk of thyroid cancer incidence and the use of Semaglutide (the active ingredient in GLP-1 agonists), the risk of thyroid cancer was less than 1%. However, more research still needs to be done and you should not take GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic if you have a family history of medullary thyroid cancer or a condition known as multiple endocrine neoplasia 2 that would increase your risk for such tumors. Mental health concerns became an issue of importance with GLP-1 agonists when the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System received numerous reports of individuals who reported suicidal thoughts and ideations while taking GLP-1 agonist drugs. However, after a careful review by the FDA, the administration found no evidence that these drugs cause suicidal thoughts or actions. In addition, a study published in BMJ also found no increased risk of suicidal thoughts in patients with type 2 diabetes taking GLP-1 agonists when compared to two other diabetic drugs. The FDA also noted that they could not rule out whether a small risk of suicidal thoughts and actions existed, and much more research would be needed to clarify if a real association existed. For these reasons, if taking drugs like Ozempic, you should report and seek medical attention immediately if you are having suicidal thoughts or have any changes in your mental health. GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic offer a power tool for patients for both diabetes and weight loss. As with all drugs, they are not without risk and anyone considering these medications should have a thorough discussion with their doctor to weigh potential benefits and side effects. Also, with the popularity of these drugs soaring, the need for long-term safety data is paramount to ensure weight loss does not come at the cost of overall well-being.

5 Simple Ways to Treat Gnat Bites

Gnat bites are a typically harmless, but bothersome, reaction that causes itchy bumps on your skin. Home remedies and OTC medications can help. It's probably not uncommon to see gnats flying around your home or yard. They're often mistaken for mosquitoes, but they're much smaller in size. Gnats are sometimes called no-see-ums because they're so small. Some species of gnats bite humans. The bites usually cause tiny, red bumps that are itchy and irritating. Although it's uncommon, there are some instances where gnat bites may cause a severe allergic reaction. In this article, we'll discuss what gnat bites look like, along with ways to treat them at home. We also have advice on how to prevent these annoying bites in the first place, and when you should see a doctor. What are gnats? Gnats are tiny, bloodsucking flies that are similar to mosquitoes. They're usually about 1/4 inch in size, but some types may be smaller. Other common names include: midges no-see-ums punkies black flies moose flies buffalo flies Both male and female gnats feed on plant nectar. In some species, the females also need a blood meal to make eggs. That's why they bite mammals such as livestock, poultry, pets, and humans. When a gnat bites, it uses scissor-like mouth structures to cut the skin. It inserts saliva into the skin, which contains substances called anticoagulants. These substances thin the blood so it's easier to digest. What does a gnat bite look and feel like? Gnat bites usually look like mosquito bites. The symptoms are caused by a minor allergic reaction to the gnat's saliva. Typically, gnat bites cause bumps that are: small red painful very itchy swollen You might also notice bleeding where the gnat bit your skin. In some people, the bumps turn into blisters filled with fluid. What can you do to treat gnat bites? If you have a minor reaction to gnat bites, you can treat them at home. Your symptoms should get better within a few days. The most effective ways to take care of gnat bites include the following five treatments. 1. Soap and water Gently wash the bites with mild soap and cool water. This helps clean the area while soothing any irritation. After washing the affected area, carefully pat it dry. Rubbing the bites may worsen your symptoms. 2. Cold compress Applying a cold compress may help ease irritation and swelling. You can use a: cloth or towel soaked in cold water ice pack wrapped in a moist towel ice cubes in a plastic bag frozen bag of vegetables with a moist cloth wrapped around the bag For best results, apply the cold compress for at least 10 minutes at a time, several times a day. Never apply ice directly to your skin. 3. Anti-itch creams To help relieve itching, apply a thin layer of hydrocortisone cream to the affected area. This type of cream contains a medication called corticosteroids, which can help reduce the irritation, redness, and itchiness caused by gnat bites. You can also use calamine lotion, which is best suited to minor skin irritations. Both treatments are available without a prescription. Always read the directions before using. 4. Antihistamines Antihistamines treat allergic reactions, including reactions to insect bites. They may provide relief by reducing itchiness and irritation. Since antihistamines are available over the counter, you can buy them without a prescription. Be sure to follow the instructions on the packaging. 5. Elevate the affected area If you were bitten on your arms or legs, try to keep the body part raised. This may help move blood away from the area and decrease swelling. You should visit a doctor if: you were bitten around the mouth or eyes your symptoms get worse or don't go away within 2 weeks you have symptoms of a skin infection, such as pus Depending on your symptoms, your doctor may recommend a prescription ointment or cream. Although it's very rare, gnat bites are capable of causing a life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. This life-threatening condition requires immediate emergency attention. Call 911 if you or someone in your family develop the following symptoms: trouble breathing wheezing when breathing swollen throat, lips, or eyelids difficulty swallowing rapid heartbeat dizziness lightheadedness nausea confusion Prevention tips Although you may not be able to completely prevent gnat bites, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk. Avoid bodies of water. Gnats are often found near swamps, ponds, marshes, and streams. If possible, avoid or limit how much time you spend around these areas. Cover exposed skin. Gnats usually bite around the face, but they can bite any area of exposed skin. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when you're outside. Use insect repellent. After using sunscreen, apply an insect repellent that contains DEET to any areas of exposed skin. If you prefer a natural alternative, you can try using a product containing oil of lemon eucalyptus. Wear light clothing. Some gnats may be attracted to dark-colored clothes. It's also recommended to avoid wearing light blue. Wear closed shoes. Wearing closed shoes outside can help protect your feet from gnat bites. Install window screens. To keep gnats out of your home, install mesh screens in your windows and doors. A ceiling or floor fan may also keep them away. Avoid using scented products. Products with strong odors, such as shampoo and perfume, may attract insects like gnats.
