NRL world rallies around Queensland legend after worrying news comes to light
The 64-year-old is currently in the intensive care unit at Cairns Hospital, but is said to be on the improve. It follows a massive heart attack he suffered two years ago, which has caused complications with the melioidosis.
The 64-year-old has been in hospital since April, but managed to watch his beloved Queensland win the State of Origin decider on Wednesday night. "I'm very grateful for my wife, who's been beside me through this journey … all my family that have been praying for me," Backo told the . "One of the nurses came around and roused on me (during Origin). I tried to keep quiet for the rest of the game."
Queensland has experienced a spike in melioidosis cases this year, particularly in the Cairns and Townsville regions. It is caused by a soil-dwelling bacterium found in tropical and sub-tropical regions like far north Queensland, and Backo believes he contracted the disease while swimming in a creek.
Flooding is a common reason why the bacteria that causes melioidosis are brought to the surface. People usually contract melioidosis after making contact with contaminated soil or water while they have cuts or abrasions on their skin.
Backo said he initially tried to ignore the symptoms before his family convinced him he needed to go to hospital. "I have 16 beautiful grandchildren. I want to see them grow up into strong people," he said.

The worrying new development comes after he was placed in an induced coma for 12 days in 2023 after suffering a heart attack. His wife Chrissy said at the time: "Sam's extended family and I have been overwhelmed and grateful for the heartfelt support for Sam and we have no doubt the prayers and spiritual blessings have helped Sam fight his biggest battle to date.
"I am sure most of you will not be surprised at Sam's strong spirit and determination to get through this. Thank you for your ongoing concern for Sam and we too look forward to his continued improvement."
Backo played 135 first-grade games from 1983 to 1990, becoming one of the toughest front-rowers in the game. After 115 games for Canberra he moved to England to play for Leeds Rhinos, before finishing his career at the Brisbane Broncos.
He played seven State of Origin games for Queensland and six Test matches for Australia. In 1990 he became the first Australian forward to score a try in all three Test matches of an Ashes series against England - a feat that no one else has ever matched.
He was awarded the Australian Sports Medal in 2000 for his contributions to rugby league, and was named in the Indigenous Team of the Century in 2001. In 2004 he was named in the Canberra Raiders' All-Indigenous team.

Fans and commentators have flocked to social media with well-wishes for the 64-year-old. Wide World of Sports columnist 'The Mole' wrote: "Sad news with Queensland Maroons cult hero Sam Backo fighting a potentially deadly tropical disease in Cairns. He still managed to cheer the Maroons home from his hospital bed."
One fan wrote: "So sorry to hear that. He's a tough man, he will fight it. Good luck Sam, hopefully you will be well soon." While another commented: "Get well soon Sam, you're a true legend."

Although, he quickly realised his mistake with the young ball kid chasing down the object. And Campbell showed his class to run over and apologise to the kid. Brad Fittler suggests rule change after Panthers incident Many feel going forward, whether accidental or not, if the kicker is put off the attempted conversion the shot should be moved right in front of goal. Roosters and Panthers great Brad Fittler mentioned this potential change on Channel Nine after the incident. Fittler was adamant the trainer made a mistake and didn't know where he was running, but a new rule could allow players to move the kick in front. "It's interesting what the law could say, you could nearly say, because of the misdemeanour, you get the goal from in front," he said on Channel Nine. "It's a shame they didn't do it - the responsible thing would have been, you saw the reaction from Jayden Campbell, move the kick in front." While Fittler labelled it a mistake, others have had enough of trainers interrupting play. Penrith Panthers called out over trainer drama This is now the second time this year the Panthers have faced controversy with a trainer. Penrith trainer Shane Elford appeared to spray the footy with a water bottle before the Panthers kicked off in Golden Point against the Cowboys earlier this year. Elford was handed a breach notice for the incident. And NRL fans are now calling for less involvement from trainers on the field. NRL teams are only allowed two trainers on the field at any given time but their roles have been the subject of debate for years. Most of the time they provide water bottles to players and help with interchanges but trainers are often seen relaying information from the coaching staff to the playing group and passing on directions from the coach's box. And fans have called for the NRL to limit the involvement of trainers in the game, which has become a talking point in recent years. Farrell content despite Australia denying Lions whitewash
British and Irish Lions coach Andy Farrell says their gruelling Australian tour was "an absolute delight" despite failing to secure a whitewash, and left the door open to leading them again in 2029 against the All Blacks. Despite a shock warm-up defeat to Argentina in Dublin, the cream of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales arrived in Perth six weeks ago as red-hot favourites against a Wallabies team that had slumped to eighth in the world. After winning their opening five tour games then overpowering the hosts 27-19 in the first Test at Brisbane, a first unbeaten series since 1974 was on the cards. But a resilient Wallabies, still rebuilding after a horror 2023 World Cup, proved the doubters wrong to rally impressively and narrowly lose the second Test 29-26 in Melbourne, before stunning the Lions 22-12 in Sydney on Saturday. Farrell said it was frustrating to lose at a rain-soaked and lightning-affected Stadium Australia, denying them a place in the pantheon of Lions greats. But he said the tour as a whole was a big success, with bumper crowds, a positive team vibe under skipper Maro Itoje and memories "that will stay with us forever". "I have said to the lads that on reflection it might take one or two beers, but they will be unbelievably proud of what they achieved throughout this tour," he told reporters. "We all know how hard it is to be successful on a Lions tour against a good side like Australia. "Lions tours are tough. The legacy for us is in that changing room. The togetherness of the whole group has been an absolute delight. "We've played some outstanding rugby." But they will take heart from their improvement as the series wore on, particularly in Sydney where they were in control for large parts of the game. Coach Joe Schmidt will step down after the southern hemisphere competition and make way for Les Kiss, who will lead them into the 2027 World Cup, which Australia will host. The New Zealander's job was always about rebuilding after the 2023 World Cup under Eddie Jones, when they failed to qualify for the knockout stage for the first time. And he believes Australian rugby is once again heading in the right direction. "I felt we grew through the series. We lost the first half of the first Test but after that I felt we were right in every match," said Schmidt. "After the feeling of deep disappointment they had after losing the series in Melbourne I couldn't be prouder of how this team responded. "Looking forward I think there is a lot to be excited about." McRae won't push panic button on Magpies' form slump
Collingwood coach Craig McRae is not concerned by the Magpies' dip in form and will resist the urge to conduct a brutal review in what he described as their worst performance since March. With three games before finals, Collingwood (15-5) will end the weekend off the top of the ladder for the first time since round nine after losing to reigning premiers Brisbane by 27 points at the MCG on Saturday night. Trailing by just a point at the main break, the Magpies' midfield was bullied by the Lions in the second half, losing clearances 31-13 over the final two quarters. "It hasn't been a pattern for us, our contest has been really strong the last weeks," McRae said. "Brisbane apparently had a stern and honest session about their contest stuff (after being thrashed by Gold Coast). "I said (to the Collingwood players), 'do you need that from me? Do you want?' "I don't think we need that, we've got a lot of trust in our group." Collingwood started their season by being smashed by GWS, suffering a 52-point loss. The Magpies have lost another four games since, but McRae believes that was their worst performance of the lot. They slammed through five goals to Brisbane's two during a dominant second term, but were unable to deliver anything close to their best in the other three quarters. Collingwood haven't beaten a current top-eight team since they crushed Hawthorn on May 30. "If you're a Collingwood supporter at home, you'd think we played probably as bad as we've played since round zero (against the Giants)," McRae said. "That's real, but that would be disrespecting Brisbane's hunt and pressure. "I actually sent the runner out three times to say 'can we kick the ball?'. "You can hear the supporters, 'can you kick it?', and they cheered us when we kicked the ball." McRae is not interested in comparing this slide to what Collingwood experienced in 2023 before winning the premiership. The Magpies lost three out of four games late in the season, recovering to peak in finals. The positive to come out of their first loss to the Lions at the MCG since 2014 was the returns of Jordan De Goey and Bobby Hill. De Goey was lively, kicking a long-range goal in the second quarter, before being subbed out in the third term due to playing his first game since May 3. Hill, who has missed a month due to personal reasons, started as the sub and replaced De Goey, taking a hanger and slotting a goal in the last quarter. "It's the long game for those two guys, they're huge, important games when they're fit and well," McRae said. Collingwood will enter Thursday night's clash with Hawthorn coming off a five-day break. But premiership star Jeremy Howe could be fit to slot into a defence badly missing his experience. Young Lions forward Logan Morris kicked a career-best six goals, two weeks after Fremantle's Patrick Voss did the same in a close win against the Magpies.
