Lisa Armstrong's verdict on Marks & Spencer's spring collection

The new-season M&S collection is about to arrive in store. On Thursday, they unleash their fashion campaign on TV. It's safe to say, you'll be seeing a lot of the brand over the next few weeks, if not months, assuming they can deliver some big hits. But will they? I went to their showroom at the Marble Arch flagship store on London's Oxford Street to preview their key pieces. Here's my verdict.
First thing to say is that if, like me, you're a stickler for good quality fabrics and balk at the amount of slimy polyfibres in so many clothes today (including from brands that are far more expensive than M&S), then you may be pleasantly surprised by what you see – or rather touch, because we all know that it's possible to make just about anything look good in a campaign image if the lighting's sufficiently magical.
A word of reason: the uptick in fabrics may be because these are spring/summer clothes rather than any overarching ambition at M&S to leave synthetics behind altogether. It's much easier to find reasonably priced summer friendly materials than it is wool and sheepskin, so let's enjoy them while we can. The polyfibres will be back come winter. And let's be clear, there are also some this summer. I wasn't mad on a lizard print synthetic shirt (the organza silk one from Autograph on the other hand was excellent). I wasn't mad on the lacy number here either – seductive in the picture. IRL, not so much.
Achieving net zero polyester is as realistic, M&S say, as achieving net zero emissions – or it is at these prices. Sigh. Surely it wasn't always like this? Or are we looking at the M&S of yore through rose-tinted specs? The 1970s were, after all, a bonanza of Crimplene. Drip-dry was King.
I'd love to hear from those with reliable M&S-related memories. For now, linen rules. As does cotton, including some unbleached trousers. They also seem to have mastered the super-soft Armani-worthy suede jacket – M&S have several suede jacket styles, cropped, wrap and slightly longer in Per Una, Autograph and core. They top out at around £269 but look and feel far more expensive.

They've clearly been working on their blocks, as their cuts look much sleeker and luxurious. If your conscience won't allow you to wear real animal skins then you might be tempted by M&S's microfibre iterations. Until recently fake suedes and leathers have tended to disappoint IRL, but this microsuede is really very good. Synthetic, it nevertheless feels breathable and drapes well. Suede is everywhere in 2025 – because it strikes that balance we're all seeking between relaxed but sleek. I would seriously consider their microfibre jacket.
Also welcome are all the British spring-friendly layers, from a sleeveless cream parka to an array of jackets in taupe, sand, chocolate and soft-khaki (very Max Mara). Included in this group is a cropped shower resistant 'trench'. You can tell there's an increasing amount of attention paid to quiet but well thought through design. The colours are the right shade, whether they're cherry red or lemon. Whole groups work together, and where individual items are meant to be layered, they're actually compatible or matching lengths. You can tell the design team are feeling confident – critical and commercial success will do that to a department. They're not just going for showy editorial pieces (easy wins if you have the barest clue what's in fashion) but really drilling down, focussing on details.
They've gone wholeheartedly for co-ords, from this lovely balloon-hem skirt and matching top – perfect for summer parties, or style with denim on weekends – to stripy cotton and linen shorts, shirts and trousers which will be perfect on the beach or at balmy barbecues.
Balloon? You read that correctly. After the success of barrel jeans (at one point, their most popular style) and carrot jeans (less exaggerated than barrel, but a similar shape), M&S have realised that women of all ages are not interested in wishy-washy frump wear, but want to look current and are happy to try out fresh ideas and new styles provided they're intelligently presented and look flattering.
Denim is a highly competitive category that's steeped in mystique and snobbery but increasingly, M&S seem to have broken down the considerable resistance that some customers had to wearing M&S jeans. It's now, just about, cool to own some of their denim. You can't argue with the VFM, at around £29 for some pairs. There's plenty of choice too, as there is across all their trousers.
There are many more skirts too than previous seasons, including this polka dot mini and the pencil silhouette (also red – there's quite a bit of it around) with white stencilling which makes it easy to pair with a white shirt as well as this stripy one. Tailoring is still a feature, 'but we've been looking at modern ways to be feminine,' says Lisa Illis, Brand Director. 'There's more emphasis on the waist, but it's all very gentle and comfortable' (note that this is also reflected on the catwalks).
A word or six about those balloon hems – in layperson's terms, they're modified puffballs. Not 1990s style, but more subtle and sophisticated. I wouldn't be surprised if the M&S design team hadn't been looking at Sophie d'Hoore, an if-you-know-you-know Belgian designer whose understated avant-garde meets earthy aesthetic produces quietly striking, timeless clothes.
I remember a long time ago a very highly paid consultant working for a rival brand telling me that M&S's avowed intent to appeal to all people was ridiculous. But I think they might be cracking it. It's not yet a rival to Zara, but for the moment, it has something Zara doesn't: the unexpected factor. If a stylish woman finds something terrific and fashion forward in Zara, no surprise. If she finds it M&S, kudos to her. These ballet-teacher shoes are a case in point: at £29.50, they're potentially this summer's equivalent of that 2019 Zara polka-dot dress.

For more classic customers, Jaeger is getting better. This summer they have a version of their hit winter kilt, complete with a matching shirt – more co-ord action and a good option for special occasions. Bags are squishy, sandals are flat or mid heel. There's a distant relative of The Row's jelly shoe – and some lovely little silk scarves which should appeal cross – generationally. They haven't forgotten the boho crowd either, with some pretty tops that look quite Sezane. That stylist who thought it was impossible to appeal to a wide range of ages couldn't be more wrong. These days, mothers, grandmothers and daughters often buy the same item – but wear it differently.
As for those bikinis, I mentioned earlier. M&S has lots this summer, plus co-ordinating cover-ups in the form of oversized, breezy shirts. As a colleague remarked when I told her, 'isn't their swimwear known for being a bit staid?' That's all in the eye of the wearer. Others might call it supportive and concealing. That will still be there, but as Maddy Evans, previously from Topshop and now head of fashion at M&S says, 'we're finally seeing younger and younger customers coming in and we want to make sure we have what they're looking for'.

It's been almost exactly 11 years since the death of inimitable comedy genius Rik Mayall. 11 long years (if you read that in Richie's voice, you're my people). I'm not over it. In fact, over a decade on, I miss Rik's irreverent humour more than ever – but I'm so honoured to be a part of the inaugural Rik Mayall Comedy Festival this weekend. In interviews after his recovery from a near-fatal quad bike accident in April 1998, Rik Mayall revealed that his family had dubbed that day 'Crap Thursday'. The crash happened the day before Good Friday, and Rik had remained in a coma until Easter Monday. He often joked that he 'beat Jesus' by being dead five days before coming back to life. Well, June 9, 2014 was definitely 'S**t Monday'. S**tter than the s**ttiest of s**t-smeared s**tty s**t Mondays. I was travelling home from a hen-do and had no idea how bad my hangover was about to get. Upon reading that Rik Mayall had died of a sudden heart attack, I burst into tears and felt sorrow in a way I hadn't thought possible from a celebrity death. Such is my love of 'The Rik', texts started to ping in from friends reassuring that they were thinking about me. Of course, my thoughts were with Rik's friends and family; his wife Barbara and three children Rosie, Sid, and Bonnie. In the years since Rik died, I've lost my own beloved mum and dad – and, while I must not diminish the insurmountable devastation felt when your nearest and dearest are snatched from this earth, the pain of Rik's untimely death at age 56 deeply affected me. British comedy had lost an irreplaceable master of the craft. I've been a fan of Rik Mayall's work for as long as I can remember. Aged seven, Grim Tales was a series of adapted Brothers Grimm stories that Rik brought to life with such hysterical flair, my young mind was indelibly transformed. Soon, Drop Dead Fred became my favourite film with repeated viewings too numerous to count – it remains my go to comfort watch. Then Bottom exploded onto TV screens in 1991. Yes, aged eight, I was too young to be watching the show but you couldn't have stopped me and my older brother from tuning in to the live-action cartoon depicting Richie and Eddie's hilariously depraved existence. It was like nothing we had ever seen before, or since. Bottom formed my funny bone into the best possible shape with its stupendous slapstick, witty wordplay and naughty nob gags – it's comedy dynamite. To say I love it is an understatement. In the years since Rik died, I've been inspired to work in comedy and study Bottom quite a lot ('while I'm alone in the house'). I've waxed lyrical about why it's the best British sitcom, I co-host a podcast Talking Bottom and have even co-authored a Bottom book, due to be published by Unbound on July 3. Now, this weekend sees The Rik Mayall Comedy Festival launch for the first time in Droitwich Spa – Rik's hometown. This brand new comedy festival being named after the inimitable genius of Rik Mayall is a fitting way to honour the man who gifted the world so much laughter. I am beyond honoured to be a tiny part of the festival, as I'll be appearing at the Norbury Theatre with a live version of my podcast Talking Bottom – I'll have the pleasure of interviewing Bottom's incredibly talented Director and Producer, Ed Bye. I plan to see as many of the other comedy shows as possible while I'm there. Every smile on every face will be gathered there thanks to a love of Rik Mayall, and, of course, the hard work of the organisers. Rik Mayall is arguably (and fight you about it, I will) the finest comic actor of his generation. From his early days in the 1980s, forming one half of an iconic partnership with Adrian Edmondson in The Dangerous Brothers, Rik took the comedy world by storm. Following their anarchic live performances at The Comic Strip club, Rik co-created and starred in The Young Ones and changed the face of British comedy in its wake. Rik went on to steal the show in sitcoms including Filthy Rich & Catflap, The New Statesman, Blackadder, Believe Nothing and Man Down. In sharp contrast to the public persona Rik cultivated – an effervescently confident ego-maniac – at his core, he struck me as someone humble. Grateful to be sharing laughter. As far as I'm concerned, it's the most wonderful gift you can bestow on your fellow humans, and Rik dished it out in custardy pants-filled bucketloads. It's often said that you shouldn't meet your heroes but I had the honour of meeting Rik on several occasions (one of the many 'ordinaries' he nicknamed fans with mocking affection), and he never disappointed. Rik was generous with his time. He made you feel special, he'd embrace you in a life-affirming hug, if female fans offered him their breasts to sign (consent was never in question), he'd gladly oblige while flashing his trademark pervy grin. He'd fall to his knees pretending to give male fans fellatio – anything for the giggle, especially when there was a camera around. Some may interpret these exchanges as overtly exhibitionist, sexual, inappropriate… but that was the point. Rik's behaviour was so gleefully outrageous and welcomed in a way that's hard to explain to anyone who didn't encounter it first-hand. Rik possessed a unique warmth of character. An endlessly playful energy exuded from him – it was infectious. All-consuming. Awe-inspiring. Addictive. Fans still feel this connection, even without having met him, as it's present in his performances. We're all invited in on the joke of his faux grandiosity. It's glorious. On June 9, 2014, grief-stricken fans poured out their love via social media – tributes to Rik Mayall 'the man, the myth, the legend' were, quite rightly, everywhere. In the months that followed, a petition for a commemorative bench in Hammersmith, located near the spot from the iconic opening credits to Bottom, was actioned. I attended the bench unveiling in November 2014 and it was healing to share the loss with fellow fans. Humour helps heal the darkest of situations. It builds memories, forms bonds and connects you on a level that seeps deep into your bones. I shared many Rik inspired laughs with my parents over the years. When my mum was ill in bed in her final days fighting cancer, I remember walking through our front door and hearing her shout the classic Richie line 'I'm in the cupbooooard' from her bedroom. We shrieked with laughter, all thanks to Rik's comedy shared in years gone by. In the months after Mum died, I took my dad on a trip to Rik's bench in Hammersmith. While there, I promptly pretended to punch him in the nether regions. I've hundreds of photos with Dad, but it's an image I especially cherish now he's sadly gone, too. You rarely have a chance to take a picture so hilariously inappropriate with your own father. I have my parents and Rik to thank for my wicked sense of humour. Rik may no longer be here but his legacy endures. New generations of comedy fans are discovering his work and that gives me comfort. It gives me hope for the future. The Young Ones fans know there's solace to be taken from the fact Rik will never truly be dead when we still have his (poems) comedy. June 9 may be the anniversary of S**t Monday but it has become a date on which fans around the world will be sharing Rik clips, memes, happy memories of meeting the comedy legend, witty letters he sent, arrange to meet each other at the bench and raise a glass to toast his memory. More Trending As such, every year, I now find myself looking forward to seeing 'Rik Mayall' trending on socials. The sadness turns to joy. It's important to mark this milestone by celebrating Rik's humour – today and always. So no, I'm still not 'over' Rik's death, I never will be… I never want to be. Global stars Charli XCX, JADE, Shygirl and Florence Welch, sign an 'open letter' in solidarity with the trans community to pressure their industry to "ensure" the safety of trans collaborators Over 400 UK artists and music industry workers have signed an open letter pledging solidarity with the trans community, including Britain's biggest names, including Charli XCX and former Little Mix band member, JADE. Following the UK Supreme Court's ruling, the trans community and allies have stormed to socials to protest the exclusion of trans people from public spaces, specifically bathrooms. ‌ Titled the ' Open Letter of solidarity to the trans community from the UK Music Industry,' the letter highlights the impact made on the trans, non-binary, and intersex communities following the Supreme Court ruling. The collective wish to add their voices to "the growing chorus of concern", made up of well-known UK writers, film and television professionals and journalists. ‌ Amongst them are a list of household names, including Dua Lipa, Ellie Golding and Mabel. Additional signatures were given by Olly Alexander (Years and Years); Rina Sawayama; Florence Welch (Florence & the Machine); Mura Masa, Shygirl, and Little Mix's JADE, Perrie Edwards and Leigh-Anne Pinnock. The letter states: "The UK music industry is a vibrant, diverse landscape that thrives on creativity and inclusivity". It continues to recognise how Western society has "long celebrated a multitude of voices and identities," with the British music industry being one of the "most trailblazing and culturally vital assets - one which trans, intersex and non-binary people are woven into in every aspect of the industry, past, present and future". ‌ The letter urges influential business and trailblazers within the music field to "ensure that trans, non-binary, and intersex colleagues, collaborators, and audiences are protected from discrimination and harassment in all areas of the industry - whether in studios, at venues, in offices, or at festivals". The open letter declares that the Supreme court ruling "not only undermines the lived reality" of the UK's non-cis community (those who's gender identity aligns with their sex) "but also weakens legal protections at a time when trans people face rising hate crime, discrimination, and systemic barriers". ‌ The collective share that they stand in solidarity with those who have "condemned" the Equality Human Rights Commission (EHRC) guidance, which actually "exposes trans people to embarrassment and harassment, ultimately excluding and seeking to erase them from participation in public life". The letter concludes, saying: " Music has the power to unite, to inspire, and to reflect the richness of the human experience". In an effort to further draw people to the cause, they added: "This is our moment to amplify voices that need to be heard, to champion inclusivity and real justice, and to ensure that our industry remains a welcoming and trailblazing space for everyone. Let us stand on the side of truth, equality, and respect".

Joan Eardley Sketches of Glasgow street children to be sold at auction

The 11 small pastel and charcoal drawings were selected from one of Eardley's sketchbooks which was given to a doctor after her death by her close friend Angus Neil, who died in 1992. Eardley is considered one of the great British artists of the 20th century and the collection is to be sold live online and in Edinburgh by auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull on June 5. The works depict studies of street children in Townhead for which she is best known, alongside sketches of Catterline on the north-east coast of Scotland where she lived with Mr Neil. The friends met at Scottish art school Hospitalfield House in Arbroath, Angus, in 1947 and Mr Neil would often stay in her Townhead studio for long periods of time. Row Of Windows, Townhead by Joan Eardley is among the lots going under the hammer (Lyon & Turnbull/PA) When Eardley moved to Catterline, he helped renovate her cottage and became a fixture around the small fishing village. After the war, Mr Neil struggled with his mental health and Eardley became a pivotal figure in his life, looking out for him and helping him financially. When Eardley died of cancer in 1963 aged 42, a distraught Mr Neil was admitted to the psychiatric hospital Sunnyside Royal near Montrose. The sketchbook was given by Mr Neil to a GP in Glasgow in the 1960s, who had provided him with room and board during a breakdown, and has been treasured by the family ever since. The auction also includes four large works by Eardley, including Fishing Nets, Catterline, which is valued at £30,000-£50,000. It featured in a major exhibition of Eardley's work in the National Galleries of Scotland in 2016-17. Children In A Doorway is among the collection by Joan Eardley up for sale (Lyon & Turnbull/PA) Jeannie, valued at £40,000-£60,000, depicts an elderly lady, Jeannie Kelso, who was befriended by Eardley during holidays to the Isle of Arran in the early 1940s. Blue Jersey, which depicts a child holding her baby brother, is estimated to fetch between £20,000 and £30,000. A rare example of an early Eardley painting, Street Scene, from the 1940s, has a valuation of £7,000-£10,000. Charlotte Riordan, senior specialist at Lyon & Turnbull, said: 'These sketches epitomise the intuitive mark-making and consummate skill of Joan Eardley. To me, they also speak volumes about the woman herself; they're direct – blunt even – but clever and charismatic. A total original.'
