Driver arrested days after getting licence after being caught speeding on M50
Members of Garda Road Policing Unit were on patrol on the M50 on Wednesday evening when they spotted the driver of an Audi A3 travelling 35km/h above the speed limit at around 11.30pm.
Gardai pulled the motorist over to the side of the road and conducted a roadside drugs test, with the rookie driver testing positive for both cocaine and cannabis.
The young driver was arrested at the scene and now faces a day in court.
Posing about the incident on the An Garda Siochana X page, a garda spokesperson said: "About 11:30pm last night, we clocked the young driver of this car travelling 35km/h above the speed limit on the M50. He has held his full driving licence an impressive 17 days.
"When tested on the roadside, he was positive for both cocaine and cannabis so he was arrested."
The driver now faces some hefty fines and a period off the road if convicted.
All drug driving offences carry a period of disqualification. In terms of disqualification periods, for those convicted of the offence of being above the threshold for Cannabis and Cocaine with no proof of impairment necessary by the Gardaí, the disqualification period is not less than one year for the first offence and not less than two years for the second or subsequent offence.
For the existing offence of drug driving while impaired, the penalty or disqualification period is a minimum of four years for a first offence and six years for a second or subsequent offence.
The maximum penalty for all drug driving offences is a €5,000 fine and up to 6 months imprisonment on summary conviction.
Meanwhile motorists who drive over the speed limit will get three penalty points and a fixed charge fine of €160.
If they do not pay the fine within 28 days, it increases to €240. If they do not pay this within 28 days (56 days from the original fine notification date), they will be summonsed to court where, if convicted, they could be fined up to €1,000 and receive up to five penalty points.

Mountjoy prisoner given extra jail time after his ‘distinctive gait' linked him to string of thefts
Gary Herbert (42) who is currently serving a custodial sentence in Mountjoy Prison, appeared before Tallaght District Court, where he pleaded guilty to one charge of possession of stolen property, relating to a grey Aovo Pro e-scooter. He pleaded not guilty to three other charges - involving the theft of cash from two parked cars and the possession of additional stolen electronic goods - but was convicted on all counts following a hearing before Judge Patricia McNamara. The guilty plea related to an incident on October 1, 2024, at Firhouse Road, Tallaght, where the defendant was stopped by Gardaí in the early hours of the morning while riding an electric scooter. Garda Conor Lavin told the court that at approximately 3.30am, he observed the accused acting suspiciously. Herbert attempted to flee but was stopped and searched. Gardaí recovered a grey Aovo Pro e-scooter, a pair of white Apple AirPods, a pair of black AirPods, and a grey iPod. Herbert admitted the scooter was not his and entered a guilty plea to that charge, but denied stealing the other items. He also denied stealing cash in two separate incidents involving parked cars. In both cases, CCTV footage was shown in court, and the vehicle owners gave evidence. One car - a Lexus parked in the Ballyroan area - was entered during the night of August 22, 2024, while the other - an unlocked Volvo in Rathfarnham - was targeted on October 27, 2024, with €150 in cash and coinage taken. Although the footage was recorded in darkness, Gardaí said Herbert could be identified in both videos by his "distinctive gait". Judge McNamara said she was satisfied it was the accused in both videos and convicted Herbert of theft and two further counts of possession of stolen property, relating to the AirPods and iPod. The court heard Herbert is currently serving an eight-month sentence, imposed in June 2025, and is due for release in April 2026. Judge McNamara imposed a nine-month sentence for the new matters, to run consecutively to his existing term. She suspended six months of that sentence for two years, meaning Herbert will serve an additional three months - unless he reoffends. Defence counsel said Herbert has long-standing issues with addiction and mental health, but had been engaging well while in custody. Judge McNamara noted that some of the offending took place only months after his last conviction. 'He was out opening cars and taking whatever he could find,' she said. 'There was no premeditation, but this was deliberate. The court had to review CCTV and hear from multiple witnesses due to his decision to contest the charges.' She warned that if Herbert is convicted again within two years of release, the suspended portion of the sentence will be activated and he will return to jail. Funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme.

Woman (50s) dies after getting into difficulty swimming in Co Donegal
A woman in her 50s has died after getting into difficulty while swimming in Co Donegal . Gardaí in Killybegs were alerted to the incident at Glencolmcille just after 7pm on Friday evening after the woman was taken from the water. She was airlifted to Sligo University Hospital where she was pronounced dead. A post-mortem examination is due to take place and a file will be prepared for the coroner. Louth Champagne thief keeps clean record after appealing severity of €500 fine
Iosebi Gelikoshvili, Triple House, Termonfeckin, Drogheda, received the benefit of the Probation Act after paying an additional €300 to the €100 he had at the initial hearing of his appeal at Dundalk Circuit Court last May. He pleaded guilty in the district court but did not attend a subsequent hearing to finalise the case and was convicted in his absence of taking the Georges Clément champagne at Mace, Clogherhead, on June 4, 2023. He had entered the shop and removed the four bottles, priced €37 each. The owner knew him by a nickname and that he lived not far away in Termonfeckin. He contacted Gardaí who obtained CCTV footage from the premises. When interviewed Mr Gelikoshvili made admissions. He said that he didn't have the money to pay and was not well, when asked why he stole the drink. All four bottles were consumed. He told investigators, 'I drank it. What else could I do?' He denied it was champagne, rather wine. The appellant identified himself from the CCTV footage and indicated he was guilty. There were no previous convictions. Judge Dara Hayes told him to come back on July 28 with another €300. On the adjourned date the Probation Act was applied when Mr Gelikoshvili, who had the assistance of a Russian interpreter, handed over the money Judge Hayes directed that it be given to the shopkeeper. If he did not want to accept the money it could go to a charity of his choice. Legal aid was granted and the court certified for counsel.
