Russell Martin is the PERFECT fit to be Rangers boss insists Ibrox sporting director Kevin Thelwell

The Ibrox sporting director played a major part in the appointment of the 39-year-old. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 3 Kevin Thelwell and Russell Martin will hope to work together for a long time at Rangers Credit: Willie Vass The former Everton recruitment chief held a series of talks with Martin and firmly believes he's ideally suited to the job. Thelwell said: 'Through a very stringent and very thorough process, it was clear right from the very start to all of us that Russell was the outstanding candidate and we're absolutely delighted that he's decided to join us. 'He's had a strong career now, over 250 games, both as a manager and as a head coach. 'We can all see over the course of that journey, he's sharpened his approach, not only from a technical perspective and a tactical perspective, but also from a personal perspective. 'I'm delighted that he's going to join us. 'I'm very excited to see what he's going to bring to Rangers Football Club and the team and very much looking forward to working with him going forward. 'We wanted to use the time well and make sure we made as strong of a decision as we possibly could do. 'I think it was the right decision to do that. 'We appreciate there's now pre-season on the horizon and also European games coming thick and fast. 'But we think that by using that time we got exactly the right candidate that's the perfect fit for Rangers Football Club. Rangers fans react as 49ers takeover completed 'From my perspective, I've seen Russell's team play for many years and in particular if I look back at that Championship season that's just been referenced and also the Premier League season, there's a lot to be proud of there and there's a lot that fits Rangers Football Club going forwards. 'Russell's explained quite clearly about what we think Rangers Football Club needs to be in those games. 'We need to be dominating in all moments, all of those key moments of the game. 'When we've got it, when we haven't got it and then the transition bits in between. 'I'm delighted that we were able to have those conversations, delighted that you made it slightly easier for me with the negotiations and also very, very pleased that you're sat next to me now and getting ready to work.' Thelwell only started work officially on Monday but plans to have a close working relationship with Martin over signings. He added: 'Put very simply, the way in which we will be organised is we've got a head coach and we've got a sporting director. 'Head coaches are responsible for the most important bit, preparation of the team, performance of the team, fundamentally the results. 3 'My role is to try and make sure that all the support services that sit around Russell are as strong as they possibly can be to give us the best chance of winning. 'When we talk about recruitment, clearly it's going to be a collaborative approach. 'I've never been in this role ever where I've signed a player for the first team that hasn't been supported by the head coach or the manager. 'So we'll talk a lot about how we want to play. 'We'll talk a lot about what profiles we think we need and what positions we think we need. And then between Russell and I and the recruitment team, we'll sit down and identify players that we think can make us better very quickly. 'And then between us, we'll decide about what we do next from that point of perspective. 'That's generally how I've worked and generally how we've discussed how it's going to work. And for me, that's probably been a good way of working so that we've got some clarity. 'But then also, it's understood it's a collaborative approach where we work together to get the best outcome.' 3 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Athletic Bilbao release transfer statement on Arsenal target Nico Williams

Arsenal are interested in signing Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams and club president Jon Uriarte has now spoken out about the Spanish international's future Athletic Bilbao have offered an update on the future of Arsenal target Nico Williams, with Gunners boss Mikel Arteta a huge fan of the winger. Arsenal have long been linked with Williams, who memorably shone for Spain as they won Euro 2024 last summer. However, it seems as though Bilbao are confident that the 22-year-old will not be leaving the club. "I believe we have a winning and interesting project for everyone, and Nico is part of that project, just like many other players," Bilbao president Jon Uriarte told Spanish outlet El Correo. ‌ "The project becomes easier if we keep our players - and I believe Nico and the rest of the squad have a very exciting year ahead." Uriarte's comments come after it emerged that Bilbao are attempting to persuade Williams to sign a new deal. ‌ The winger is currently under contract until 2027 and his deal is said to include a release clause worth around £50million. However, Williams' wage demands are understood to be a stumbling block. Mirror Football understands that Williams would want to be paid more than £300,000-a-week to make him one of the bigger earners in Europe. Barcelona have also been heavily linked with Williams, but their financial restrictions have made the move unlikely. Barcelona have also seen an approach for Liverpool's Luis Diaz rebuffed, with the club unwilling to sell the player unless they receive a bumper offer. Diaz has also i ndicated that he wants to stay at Anfield. "I feel I'm going through a really good period," Diaz told club media. "I'm really happy to be here, to be part of this great institution, this great club and to have great team-mates around me. From the moment I arrived, I felt great pride. "I always tried to work hard for this, and to see that nowadays things are working out for me fills me with pride and I'm really happy because that's what I work for. [But] we are nobodies without our team-mates. ‌ "We are a team. The forwards and wingers always try to help with goals and assists, and right now I've achieved good numbers to back that up. It's about playing and then playing well, supporting the team in the way I play and enjoying it, like always." Diaz is out of contract in 2026, but the winger expects talks over an extension to begin imminently. "We will be talking, the talk about it (his future) will happen," he said recently. "For me, I'd stay for as long as possible. It also depends on the club, it all depends on the details. They're all details that are sorted out separately. But I am very calm, very happy and I am enjoying the Premier League."

England Lionesses announce squad for Euro 2025 after Sarina Wiegman was rocked by THREE withdrawals days before

Millie Bright became the latest star to make herself unavailable this week GOING FOR GOLD GOING FOR GOLD England Lionesses announce squad for Euro 2025 after Sarina Wiegman was rocked by THREE withdrawals days before ENGLAND manager Sarina Wiegman has named her 23-player squad for Euro 2025 as the Lionesses prepare to defend their title. Three years on from their first-ever European Championship triumph, the Lionesses head to Switzerland next month as one of the favourites. 2 Sarina Wiegman has named her squad for Euro 2025 Credit: Getty 2 The Lionesses are looking to defend their European title Credit: Getty But they will be missing three key players who contributed to that incredible Wembley success. Millie Bright, who captained the squad at the 2023 World Cup, made herself unavailable for selection earlier this week due to burnout. Fran Kirby announced her retirement from international football on Tuesday after learning that she would not be travelling to Switzerland. And goalkeeper Mary Earps hung up her gloves last month in a huge shock to both Wiegman and her team-mates. Despite the absences, England approach the European Championship next month with a strong squad. Leah Williamson will captain the Lionesses for the second time at a major tournament. She will be joined by defenders Lucy Bronze, Alex Greenwood, Maya Le Tissier, Esme Morgan, Jess Carter, Niamh Charles and Lotte Wubben-Moy. Following the departure of Earps last month, Hannah Hampton will be England's No1 this summer. Khiara Keating and Anna Moorhouse will be on hand in case the Chelsea ace gets injured. Georgia Stanway returned to the England squad last week following a five-month period on the sidelines with a knee injury. She is among the list of midfielders included, alongside the likes of Keira Walsh, Ella Toone, Grace Clinton and Jess Park. And in attack, Wiegman has picked Alessia Russo, Aggie Beever-Jones, Lauren Hemp, Beth Mead, Chloe Kelly and 19-year-old Michelle Agyemang. Despite being sidelined with a hamstring injury, Lauren James has also earned a call-up for the tournament. Out of the 23-player squad, 13 were part of the Lionesses' Euro 2022-winning squad at Wembley. Meanwhile, seven players will be appearing at their first major tournament.
