I've been testing TVs for over over a decade — here's my top 5 picks for every budget
I've spent the last 10 years of my life looking for the best TVs. I've been lucky enough to see the vast majority of TVs from the likes of Samsung, LG, Sony, TCL and Hisense at various tradeshows, and even luckier to have dozens of them in my own home over the years
I've got lots of hands-on time with them, but with new models coming every year, it can be hard to know exactly how much to spend when shopping for a new TV.
Now, to help, I've put together lists of the best TVs under $500 and the best TVs under $1,000 — and these are great resources when you need them — but not everyone has the time to spend reading articles.
Below, you'll find a truncated version of those lists. It's light on technical information (though it's all available if you click on each TV) but you can use this as a quick guide on what to buy and how much to actually spend when shopping for a new set.
This is the TV price range most folks shop for — and there are a lot of good value options here.
My favorite TV under $500 has to be the TCL QM7. It's a Mini-LED TV (basically an LED-LCD TV with far better control over its dimming zones) with a native 120Hz refresh rate. That refresh rate can be boosted up to 144Hz when connected to a gaming PC and it supports both major types of dynamic HDR, Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
Alternatively, the Hisense U6N offers many of the same features (but lower brightness and color volume) for around $200 less, as do the lower-end TCL Q6 and the slightly older Roku Series Plus. I think it's worth paying the extra money for the better performance, but I totally understand if your budget doesn't stretch that far.
Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips.
All the TVs mentioned above are either available in a 55-inch or a 65-inch for under $500.
Unfortunately, there's no 75-inch or 85-inch TV I could comfortably recommend at this price. If you don't need a 55-inch TV and want something a bit smaller, we're currently reviewing the Samsung F6000F Full HDTV that's on sale at Amazon for $200. It doesn't remotely compete with the TCL QM7 mentioned above, but it's a brand-new smart TV for a very tough-to-beat sticker price.
At $1,000, picking a clear winner is much harder. Basically, you can either get an amazing OLED TV at its smallest size; a huge 75-inch budget TV; or a decent-sized mid-range model, all for under a grand. So let's walk through each scenario.
No one ever sets out to buy a small TV. But once I explain what makes OLED so great, lots of folks then decide that they'd rather have a small, gorgeous-looking TV than a larger, lower-performing model. If you feel like you fit in that category, I recommend looking at the 55-inch LG B4 OLED. At 55 inches, it's still a pretty reasonable size, and its picture is unmatched at this price point.
If 55 inches just won't cut it for your living room, go for the 65-inch Hisense U8N. This is my favorite TV from 2024, and I think it delivers performance that rivals TVs that cost twice as much. It's not an OLED, obviously, but thanks to its Mini-LED backlighting, its contrast is much better than your average LED-LCD screen and its color saturation is exceptional. It's a native 120Hz screen with support up to 144Hz with Dolby Vision and Atmos on-board. The same is true for the 65-inch TCL QM8 that's $100 less at $899.
For larger screens under $1,000, you have a few options: There's the 85-inch Hisense U6N model I mentioned earlier, if you don't mind something from 2024, or the 75-inch TCL QM6K from 2025 if you want something fresh from the factory. Both are great Mini-LED models.
Unfortunately, there's no 98-inch model under $1,000 yet — but maybe that will change in 2026.
OK, now we're talking big bucks. If you're spending this much money, you're definitely getting a sizable OLED or a huge Mini-LED TV.
At some point in the near future, the 65-inch LG C5 OLED should drop down to just under $2,000. Until then, last year's excellent LG C4 OLED is available in a 77-inch screen size for just $1,799. Given its size and performance, it's the TV I'd currently recommend buying.
In a very close second place is the Samsung S90D OLED. It's also available in a 77-inch screen size, but it's $2,199. The extra $200 is worth it for the additional brightness, but if your hard limit is $2,000, the smaller 65-inch version is an option.
You might be wondering where Sony TVs rank on this list — unfortunately the best Sony TVs cost well over $2,000. The best we can do at this price point is the 75-inch Sony Bravia 7. It's an exceptional Mini-LED TV, don't get me wrong, but it's no OLED.
If you simply want the biggest TV for your buck without compromising on performance, there's the 85-inch version of the Hisense U8N I mentioned earlier or the 85-inch TCL QM8. Both are $1,699 and offer similar performance.
I have a hunch you might be able to get one of the larger 98-inch versions for under $2,000 later — but we won't know for sure until Black Friday rolls around in November.
The prices listed above are current as of June 2025. Amazon Prime Day 2025 is coming up from July 8 to July 11, and those prices could take a steep nose-dive. The same is true for Black Friday, though, that won't happen until November 28.
Here's the good news: The dynamic links on this page will change when that happens, so just come back if you need the latest prices, or head on over to our Best Cheap TV Deals page to see what's on sale at this very second.

Samsung aims to catch up to Chinese rivals for thin foldable phones as Apple said to enter the fray
Samsung will unveil a thinner version of its flagship foldable smartphone at a launch likely set to take place next month, as it battles Chinese rivals to deliver the slimmest devices to the market. Folding phones, which have a single screen that can fold in half, came in focus when Samsung first launched such a device in 2019. But Chinese players, in particular Honor and Oppo, have since aggressively released foldables that are thinner and lighter than Samsung's offerings. Why are slim foldables important? "With foldables, thinness has become more critical than ever because people aren't prepared to accept the compromise for a thicker and heavier phone to get the real estate that a folding phone can deliver," Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, told CNBC on Thursday. Honor, Oppo and other Chinese players have used their slim designs to differentiate themselves from Samsung. Let's look at a comparison: Samsung's last foldable from 2024, the Galaxy Z Fold6, is 12.1 millimeter ~(0.48 inches) thick when folded and weighs 239 grams (8.43 oz). Oppo's Find N5, which was released earlier this year, is 8.93 millimeters thick when closed and weighs 229 grams. The Honor Magic V3, which was launched last year, is 9.2 millimeters when folded and weighs 226 grams. "Samsung needs to step up" in foldables, Wood said. And that's what the South Korean tech giant is planning to do at its upcoming launch, which is likely to take place next month. "The newest Galaxy Z series is the thinnest, lightest and most advanced foldable yet – meticulously crafted and built to last," Samsung said in a preview blog post about the phone earlier this month. But the competition is not letting up. Honor is planning a launch on July 2 in China for its latest folding phone, the Magic V5. "The interesting thing for Samsung, if they can approach the thinness that Honor has achieved it is will be a significant step up from predecessor, it will be a tangible step up in design," Wood said. Despite these advances by way of foldables, the market for the devices has not been as exciting as many had hoped. CCS Insight said that foldables will account for just 2% of the overall smartphone market this year. Thinner phones may be one way to address the sluggish market, but consumer preferences would also need to change. "There is a chance that by delivering much thinner foldables that are more akin to the traditional monoblock phone, it will provide an opportunity to turn consumer heads and get them to revisit the idea of having a folding device," Wood said. "However, I would caution foldables do remain problematic because in many cases consumers struggle to see why they need a folding device." Although the market remains small for foldables compared to traditional smartphones, noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities on Wednesday said Apple — which has been notably absent from this product line-up — plans to make a folding iPhone starting next year.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 launch date leaks, but there might be a bigger problem
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 launch date is tipped to be less than three weeks away, but it's going to be beaten to the punch by another foldable which could put a dampener on Samsung's announcement. Chinese smartphone maker Honor has announced when it will officially launch its next foldable, confirming that it will be the 'world's thinnest foldable smartphone'. Recommended Videos The Honor Magic V5 will be introduced in China on July 2, and looks set to wrestle the thinnest foldable crown back from Oppo, which had taken it from Honor and the Magic V3 with the arrival of the Oppo Find N5 earlier this year. Considering the Find N5 is just 8.9mm when folded and a super svelte 4.2mm unfolded (ignoring the camera bump), the Honor Magic V5 looks set to be a particularly slick piece of hardware. It means when folded, the Magic V5 isn't going to be that much thicker than the Galaxy S25 Ultra (8.2mm) or the iPhone 16 Pro Max (8.3mm) – and neither of those phones fold. Phone Folded Unfolded Oppo Find N5 (2025) 8.9mm 4.2mm Honor Magic V3 (2024) 9.3mm 4.4mm Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold (2024) 10.5mm 5.1mm OnePlus Open (2023) 11.7mm 5.8mm Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 (2024) 12.1mm 5.6mm As the table above shows, its current Z Fold 6 is considerably thicker than rival foldables from Oppo, Honor and Google – so there's a lot of work for Samsung to do if it wants the Z Fold 7's hardware to compete here. The good news for Samsung fans is rumors suggest the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be considerably thinner than the Fold 6, as Samsung continues to tease its next foldable, but there are conflicting reports on just how thin it will be. Usually reliable leaker Universe Ice has suggested the Galaxy Z Fold 7 might be as thin as 3.9mm when unfolded – which would really give the Magic V5 a run for its money – but a more recent report from SamMobile suggest Samsung's foldable will be 4.54mm unfolded and 9mm folded. This is very similar to an Android Headlines report from February, giving more weight to this sizing. Still, at 9mm folded it would be considerable improvement over the Z Fold 6, but it could still have fans looking enviously at other foldables. Thinness envy Honor says 'the Magic V5 is designed to directly challenge the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7', and along with this bold statement, the Chinese manufacturer gave us our first look at the slender profile of the Magic V5. I was seriously impressed by the Magic V3 after spending an extended period of time with it, and it did make me disappointed that my Pixel 9 Pro Fold was noticeably chunkier. With the Magic V5 set to be even slimmer, I fully expect a phone which is supremely pocketable and comfortable in the hand. And that's exactly what you should expect from a phone with a price tag as lofty as today's foldables. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 will likely come with its own sizable asking price, and when I part with quite so much money I want to know I'm getting something special. Samsung has teased us by saying it's lining up an 'Ultra' branded foldable this year, which could well be the Z Fold 7, and while that should mean excellent power and cameras, it could also mean a higher price tag. While a more expensive foldable isn't necessarily a bad thing, if we get the scenario where Samsung increases the price but doesn't refine the design to beat, or even match, the Honor and Oppo competition, it will take some of the shine off the Z Fold 7's introduction. The thinnest foldable in the US? According to reliable leaker Evan Blass, Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 7 on July 9, just seven days after the Honor Magic V5 is announced in China. The next Galaxy Unpacked: 9 July 2025 @ 10AM EDT — Evan Blass (@evleaks) June 18, 2025 But even if the Galaxy Z Fold 7 isn't as thin as the Honor Magic V5, the latter is unlikely to be available to buy in the US, as previous Honor devices haven't launched here. And with the Oppo Find N5 also not available in the US, it leaves American foldable phone fans with a limited choice. It means that for the US, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 may be the thinnest foldable phone available. While that will be some comfort for buyers, there could be that nagging voice reminding you there's something more slender out there in the world. Either way, it looks like we won't have to wait much longer to find out if Honor and Samsung will introduce us to some of the best foldable phones of 2025.
