Carl Gizzi: Tributes to ‘legend' boxer who ‘put Rhyl on map'

Rhyl Journal06-06-2025
Mr Gizzi, who was born in Rhyl in 1944, died aged 80 on April 27 following a battle with dementia, with his funeral held at St Asaph Crematorium on May 30.
He is survived by his brother, Tony; his daughter, Renee, and son, Carl; and his two granddaughters, Monique and Stevie.
As a boxer, Mr Gizzi was Welsh heavyweight champion from 1965 to 1971, and a British heavyweight title challenger in 1971.

Making his debut in the ring in 1964, he went on to win 31 of his 43 bouts (with 11 KOs), with opponents including Jack Bodell and Joe Bugner, while he also sparred with Muhammad Ali.
After retirement, Mr Gizzi worked as a bouncer, including at the now-closed Rhyl club The Bistro on West Parade, and as a window cleaner.
In 1972, he married his wife, Heather, who died in 2016, and became a father in 1974 when Renee was born, with Carl following in 1975.
Renee Gizzi celebrated the life her 'amazing' father, who she described as 'the perfect gentle giant'.
She said: 'He would give everybody the time of day. He was always there for other people.
'He was big family man; even though he had all the fame when he was younger, he didn't care about that, and it didn't go to his head.
'His boxing was amazing; he was a big gentle giant even when he was in the ring. He would never get in the ring first; he'd always wait for his opponent to get in the ring before him. He thought: 'First in, first out'.'
Carl Gizzi with his late sister, Sandra (Image: Jimmy Garland) Donations pledged at Mr Gizzi's funeral will part of a £1,000 offering to the Gwanwyn ward at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, whose staff Ms Gizzi said were 'amazing' in caring for him.
She said Mr Gizzi's funeral was a 'really beautiful celebration of his life', with the last song at the service No Limit by 2 Unlimited.
Ms Gizzi added: 'He just loved being outside in the fresh air. All the way up to COVID, he was still working.
'He was always there for us. Anything you wanted, he'd be there. When I bought my house at age 20, he was always on hand to help.
'My dad always wanted to celebrate life; he never thought the worst.'
Actor Spencer Wilding, from Rhyl, said Mr Gizzi 'put Rhyl on the map' and 'brought so much happiness to the town'.
Spencer Wilding with Carl Gizzi (Image: Spencer Wilding) He added: 'He was my cousin, but I called him 'Uncle Carl'. I was glad to have loved him; he was the 'number one'. We all looked up to him. He was a legend.
'Carl fought before I was born, but you'd have trains pulling up to Rhyl full of people coming to watch him fight.
'I used to walk past Carl every weekend and he'd always say hello outside The Bistro. I loved Uncle Carl; I'd go and see him many a time.
'Everyone in the boxing world had so much respect for him. He was a gentleman. He had the best left jab in the business; he was a brilliant boxer.
'He was a very special soul, and I loved him so much.'
Spencer Wilding with Carl Gizzi (Image: Spencer Wilding) Peter Trehearn, who got to know Mr Gizzi personally through his cousin, said he was a 'second to none' bouncer who 'greeter customers as friends' at The Bistro.
He was, Mr Trehearn added, a 'protective big brother and father figure'.
'I had known of Carl from a distance as 'the' Rhyl icon since my youth, and had seen him box in Liverpool when I was trying out boxing in Rhyl Youth Club circa 1966-67.
'Carl was a thoughtful, gentle and modest person, and above all, a family man who was loved and respected by all.
'He made customers safe to relax and enjoy The Bistro's atmosphere. He is the reason that the Bistro had and still has, in customers' memories, such a good reputation.
'Renee and Carl Jr gifted us a lovely classical statue from their father's home which stands in our garden, and is a reminder of a long and continuing friendship.'
Carl Gizzi (Image: Jimmy Garland) Jimmy Garland, Mr Gizzi's nephew, called his uncle 'a gentleman, a giant, and a guardian'.
He said: 'In the days when legends like Muhammad Ali reigned in the ring, our very own 'Uncle Mickey' - Carl Gizzi - stood among the world's best.
'Ranked fifth in the world as a heavyweight boxer, he wasn't just a fighter by title - he was one by heart, spirit, and grit; A man whose hands could move with thunder, but whose heart beat with warmth and loyalty.
'Uncle Mickey became a silent guardian at the doors of clubs and venues. With his imposing frame, he kept the peace, not with force but with presence — a protector, not a provoker. And always, with his signature smoking pipe in hand.
'Uncle Mickey was the kind of man whose strength never drowned out his kindness. Whether it was in the boxing ring, on the doors, or at the dinner table, he was deeply respected — and deeply loved.
'A warrior in his youth, a watchman in his later years, and a legend in our hearts forever.'

Noel Gallagher's hefty bill for weekend hotel stay during Oasis gigs

Noel Gallagher's hefty bill for weekend hotel stay during Oasis gigs The guitarist and lead singer of Oasis stayed at the five-star Kildare hotel in Maynooth on Friday afternoon during the band's Croke Park gig in Dublin and the bill was rather high Noel Gallagher performing at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, kicking off the reunion tour (Image: PA) Rock legend, and Oasis lead guitarist, Noel Gallagher reportedly spent a whopping €80,000 on his weekend stay at an Irish hotel as they prepared for their Dublin gigs. The guitarist checked into the five-star Carton House hotel on Friday afternoon and was spotted enjoying a few pints at Brady's Clockhouse pub in the Irish town of Maynooth shortly after his arrival, causing quite a buzz amongst the locals. It has been revealed that Noel's bill for his weekend getaway totalled €80,000, with an insider disclosing that his own suite cost him a hefty €7,000. The remainder of the bill covered the accommodation costs for his daughter, Anaïs's room, as well as his security and management team. In contrast, his brother Liam chose to stay at the luxurious five-star Powerscourt Hotel in Wicklow, arriving at Dublin Airport's VIP lounge on Saturday morning, as reported by the Irish Mirror. Unlike Noel, Liam kept a low profile until he took to the stage at Croke Park on Saturday night. Though Liam too, booked a luxury stay, he's wasn't one to stroll around until the time of the band's performance (Image: PA) This weekend marked Oasis's first return to Ireland since 2009, with fans praising the sell-out tour on social media following the event. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter Over 160,000 fans were treated to a stellar performance by the rockers across Saturday and Sunday night, reports Dublin Live. As UK inflation is set to have edged higher last month as summer spending pushed up flight and hotel costs, and food prices continue to climb, one economist believes an "Oasis bump" could have contributed to higher accommodation prices in July. The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation is widely anticipated to have risen in July from the 3.6% rate recorded in June, according to data to be published by the Office for National Statistics on Wednesday. Sanjay Raja, a senior economist at Deutsche Bank, estimated that price pressures would have pushed CPI to 3.8% last month. "July inflation will likely see price momentum rise further into uncomfortable territory," he wrote in a research note. The school summer holidays are likely to have led to increases in airfares, rail costs, and package holiday prices. Mr Raja also highlighted a potential spike in hotel prices, which he said could partly be due to the British band Oasis starting their reunion tour in July. The concerts attracted large crowds to arenas in Cardiff, Manchester, London and Edinburgh. Accommodation prices could have risen by as much as 9% in July compared with June, "with the Oasis concerts having a strong impact on Manchester prices alone," the economist said. Fans, pushed forward though. Despite not being able to secure tickets for Oasis' second sold-out gig at Croke Park on Sunday, throngs of fans still managed to be part of the night, gathering outside the stadium for a mass singalong. As Liam and Noel Gallagher took to the stage for their final Dublin performance of their reunion tour, those without tickets created a festival-like atmosphere on the streets surrounding the GAA venue. Footage taken outside showed fans of all ages belting out hits like Half The World Away, their voices reverberating across Dublin's northside. After a weekend of rocking Croke Park, Oasis members found time to unwind at O'Donoghue's pub in Dublin's south city centre on Sunday night. Just hours after their performance, Noel, Oasis guitarist Paul Arthurs, also known as 'Bonehead', Gem Archer and Joey Waronker were seen letting their hair down in the Baggot Street pub. It's believed that Liam decided to skip the after-show party. Joining the band for a well-deserved pint were celebrities including Dominic West, Jasmine Guinness, Laura Whitmore and MCD's Denis Desmond and Emmett J Scanlan. U2 frontman Bono, who attended Sunday night's concert, is also understood to have popped into O'Donoghues, leaving around 1am. Well-known personalities including Vogue Williams and comedian Carl Mullan were seen amongst the audience on the opening evening at Croke Park, whilst Tánaiste Simon Harris secured a place for the Sunday evening performance. The Fine Gael leader even wore an Oasis bucket hat as he praised the group for an "incredible gig" and "magical atmosphere" the previous evening. Riverdance icon Michael Flatley was also present in the Croke Park crowd over the weekend. He took a photograph with Liam and Noel's mother Peggy, showing appreciation to the brothers for a "great night". This represents the first time Peggy has been photographed at their reunion tour since the Mayo-born lady's knee surgery several months ago. Liam dedicated Stand By Me to his mother, telling the audience: "This next one's for me mam, she's had a knee operation in the past couple of months, this one's called Stand By Me." Former England forward Peter Crouch also captured a photograph with Flatley alongside his wife Abbey Clancy, while television personalities Brian Dowling and Arthur Gourounlian also succeeded in obtaining Oasis tickets. Pierce Brosnan: I would play Bond again in a heartbeat

Pierce Brosnan has said he would reprise the role of James Bond as part of Amazon's reboot of the British spy franchise. The Irish-American actor played 007 in four Bond films in the 1990s and early 2000s including GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough. Now 72, Brosnan admitted that the world might not be ready for a senior citizen 007, but that he would seize the opportunity if Denis Villeneuve, the new Bond director, came knocking. He told Radio Times: 'I don't think anyone wants to see a craggy, 72-year-old Bond but if Villenevue had something up his sleeve I would look at it in a heartbeat. 'It could be lots of laughs. Bald caps, prosthetics… who knows?' Brosnan was 51 when he appeared in his last Bond film – 2002's Die Another Day – before he moved he went on to star in other Hollywood films including The Thomas Crown Affair, Dante's Peak and Mamma Mia! Roger Moore was considered by some to be too old to play the spy during his run of seven Bond films. The British actor was 57 when he made his final Bond film, View To A Kill, in 1985. Sean Connery, who many Bond aficionados believe was the best 007, was in his 30s when he starred in the role in the 1960s and 1970s. Even when Connery reprised the 007 role for the non-official Bond film, Never Say Never Again, in 1983, he was still a sprightly 53. Brosnan, who will star in the new Thursday Murder Club film, said he had been keeping a close eye on who the next Bond will be after Daniel Craig bowed out in 2021 after five films. 'My wife Keely [Shaye Smith] and I have been listening to the drumbeat of expectation of who's going to be the next James Bond,' he told Radio Times. 'There are many great candidates out there, and I'm sure they're going to make it a spectacle of delight.' Bond must be a man Brosnan recently reaffirmed his view that Britain's most famous fictional spy had to be played by a man after an 2019 interview resurfaced in which the actor claimed it was time 'to put a woman up there'. At the time, he also said a female Bond would be 'exciting' and 'exhilarating'. But Brosnan is now back behind a male Bond. He said: 'I'm so excited to see the next man come on the stage and to see a whole new exuberance and life for this character,' he told Saga Magazine. 'I adore the world of James Bond. It's been very good to me. It's the gift that keeps giving. 'And I'm just a member of the audience now, sitting back saying: 'Show us what you're going to do'. Brosnan also wished Amazon MGM Studios – which paid $1 billion for the rights for creative control of the 007 franchise – all the best for the new films. Amid concerns about what Amazon is going to do to one of the world's most famous franchises, Dame Helen Mirren also urged Amazon not to mess with the formula amid concerns about Amazon's takeover of the franchise. 'I'm such a feminist, but James Bond has to be a guy. You can't have a woman. It just doesn't work,' she told Saga Magazine. 'James Bond has to be James Bond, otherwise it becomes something else.' Aaron Taylor-Johnson, known for 28 Years Later and Bullet Train, is among the favourites to succeed Craig. Though Idris Elba, 52, ruled himself out of contention saying he felt he was 'too old' for Bond, his name is still being touted as a possible replacement. Theo James (White Lotus), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) and Callum Turner (Fantastic Beasts) have also all been linked to the role.
