Lewis Hamilton reaching 'critical' point of underwhelming debut season with Ferrari - as F1 expert warns of 'growing concerns' in the Scuderia

Daily Mail4 hours ago

Lewis Hamilton 's early season struggles with new team Ferrari has resulted in the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix becoming a 'critical' point in his campaign, believes Sky Sports' Karun Chandhok.
The seven-time world champion is still waiting for his first podium since joining the Scuderia from Mercedes, with his sixth-place finish at the Spanish GP providing the latest example of his travails.
According to former F1 driver Chandhok, there could now be 'concerns creeping in' at the constructor after a race in which Hamilton was told to let his teammate Charles Leclerc pass him after he was unable to keep pace with the the two McLarens and Max Verstappen.
Chandhok shared the view that Hamilton is struggling for rhythm and consistency after being 'comfortably' beaten by Leclerc, who finished third, notching a trio of podium finishes.
'It's starting to get a bit critical,' he said on the The F1 Show. 'We're coming into the second third of the season now, and he's not finding the rhythm. He's not finding consistency where week in, week out, he's in a happy place of the car.
'In Imola, he was woeful in qualifying, then suddenly the car's brilliant in the race. In Monaco, he wasn't quite there. He was a chunk behind Charles throughout. There's got to be a degree of concern creeping in. When you look at Spain, the fact that Charles overtook him and drove away from him quite comfortably, even before we go into the different tyres and stuff later on.
'If I was on the Lewis side of the garage, I would be concerned. We are nearly at halfway through the year now, we need to start understanding whether this a fundamental issue, that we need to change the direction of the set-up of the car.
'I'm not disputing that he's still got the ability. He clearly does. He's able to win races, we saw that in China, but they need to find a sweet spot for him, where every weekend he knows what he's got, and they haven't got that. He's still having too many good days and bad days. The fluctuations are too much.'
A dejected Hamilton made a brutal admission about his performance after his lacklustre showing in Spain last week.
After reappearing for his post-race media duties, the visibly frustrated 40-year-old couldn't help but snap while speaking to Sky Sports.
Pressed on his comment over team radio that there was 'something wrong' with his car, and for his immediate reaction to the race, Hamilton replied: 'Not particularly, it was not a great day. The strategy was good, the team did a great job. Just, that's it.'
Sky interviewer Rachel Brookes then told Hamilton: 'I hate seeing you in this mood.'
But Hamilton quickly fired back, replying: 'Well what do you want me to say? I had a really bad day and I've got nothing to say.
'It was a difficult day, I've got nothing else to add to it. There's no point explaining it. It's not your fault, I've just not got anything to say.'
Brookes admitted she hopes Ferrari will be able to find a fix for his woes, but Hamilton said: 'I'm sure they won't, the answer is probably just me.'
Hamilton trails Leclerc by 23 points in the drivers' championship and, damningly, has finished six of his first nine Ferrari races outside of the top five.
There have been criticisms of Hamilton's car this season, with team principal Fred Vasseur claiming there was an issue with the vehicle towards the end of the Spanish GP. The Ferrari team boss has since backed the veteran and insisted he needs only adjust 'the details' to challenge for podiums this term.
'Hamilton is only missing the details,' said Vasseur. 'We are talking about hundredths, which in this balanced Formula 1 can make the difference between a first and a third row - between a good weekend and a less good one.
'ut they remain details - understanding the car, setup, communication. It's normal when you change teams. Frustration? It's understandable.'

Montreal aims to bounce back as Formula 1 host after 2024 misstep

When it comes to Montreal's biggest party weekend of the year, the pressure is on. As the 2025 edition approaches (and despite a contract in place), rumours are swirling that Montreal's race might be at risk. The talk started with the 2024 failures of last year's edition. Now with the metro and bus strike, Montreal's air quality index at an all-time low thanks to the Canadian wildfires, plus the extreme summer 2025 forecast bringing post-tropical cyclones and torrential downpours, Montreal's ability and commitment to host is being seriously called into question. The Canadian Grand Prix attracts thousands of visitors to Montreal and captivates millions of viewers worldwide. Following major organizational issues and concerns from local businesses in 2024, this year's event could play a key role in determining the race's long-term future. What happened at F1 Montreal in 2024? Torrential rains flooded the paddocks and work areas used by Formula One teams. Drivers were reportedly late for key meetings due to delays caused by mismanaged construction zones. Poor communication between race organizers, the city, police, and Montreal's transit authority created major access problems for ticket holders. Some fans bypassed barriers and made their way onto the track. Meanwhile, restaurant patios were abruptly shut down during dinner service by the fire department for bylaw infractions. Is there a new app for the Formula 1 2025 edition? This year, the experience at the track should be much improved thanks to a new app which will help guide and inform fans of entertainment options on site. There will also be new colour-coded site maps and enhanced food options. You can find the app by clicking the link here.

Liberty not content with 8-0 record as Sky visit

June 9 - New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu is not taking her team's best start in franchise history for granted. Ionescu, Breanna Stewart and the Liberty (8-0) will aim to keep rolling along on Tuesday when they host the Chicago Sky (2-5). "Obviously, 8-0 is great, but that's not what our goal is," Ionescu said. "(We're) going to take every single game and take it one by one and continue to try to get better." Stewart collected 26 points and 11 rebounds in the Liberty's 86-78 victory over the Washington Mystics on Thursday. The two-time WNBA MVP averages a team-high 19.1 points while Ionescu adds 17.3 points per game. All is not rosy for the Liberty, however, as star center Jonquel Jones sustained a right ankle injury on a layup in the first quarter against the Mystics. She did not return to the game. "Let's hope that it's not too bad that it'll keep her out," New York coach Sandy Brondello said after the game of Jones, the MVP of the 2024 WNBA Finals. The New York Post reported Sunday that Jones had not been ruled out for Tuesday's game. Jones contributes 13.9 points and a team-best 10.3 rebounds per game this season while shooting 42.9 percent from 3-point range. The Liberty could turn to Nyara Sabally should Jones be unable to play on Tuesday. Per Brondello, Sabally is poised to return to action following a six-game absence due to a right knee injury. Natasha Cloud scored 18 points, Ionescu had 16 and Stewart contributed 12 as the Liberty cruised to a 99-74 victory over the Sky on May 22 in Chicago. Courtney Vandersloot scored 14 points in that game. She was slated to receive a nice welcome Tuesday because she started at point guard for last year's WNBA champs, but the Sky star sustained a torn ACL Saturday in the team's 79-52 setback to the Indiana Fever. She will miss the remainder of the season. "It's heartbreaking. It's heartbreaking to watch anybody, but especially one of our teammates and someone that means as much as Sloot does to this team and organization," Hailey Van Lith said of Vandersloot, who averages 10.6 points and a team-high 5.3 assists. "Whatever is in store in the future for this team, I trust we will find a way to make this moment mean something in the end." Ariel Atkins averages a team-best 13.7 points per game for Chicago, while Angel Reese contributes a WNBA-high 12.3 rebounds per contest. --Field Level Media

Here's your chance to own three different Ferrari Daytonas… for £6m+

Here's your chance to own three different Ferrari Daytonas… for £6m+ Need a new daily, summer cruiser and track toy? RM Sotheby's latest auction might appeal Skip 18 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Turn on Javascript to see all the available pictures. 1 / 18 The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 'Daytona' is famous for several reasons: the stunning design, its 174mph top speed (a production car record in 1968), and because the soft interior and predictable handling made it a grand touring supremo. Courtesy of RM Sotheby's, a unique opportunity to own three gloriously kept variations of the Daytona has now appeared, including a Berlinetta, Spider and Competizione. Very nice… but do consider they're likely to cost a combined fee of at least £6m ($8m). Yikes. Advertisement - Page continues below It's estimated that Ferrari made 1,284 Berlinettas, and this one's 2,000-mile odometer count makes it one of the freshest examples in existence. Finished in 'Rosso Chiaro' (red) over a 'Nero' (er, black) interior, it's a sumptuous piece of car design. From the iconic front strip and pop-up headlights, to the tiny five-spoke alloys and protruding quad-exhaust pipes, it's got serious presence. Beneath the long, sweeping bonnet sits a 4.4-litre 'Colombo' V12 mated to a five-speed manual transmission, sending 347bhp and 318lb ft to the rear wheels. 0-62mph is sorted in five-and-a-bit seconds. Mighty outputs, even by today's standards. Then there's the $2m Spider, which is arguably even more gorgeous than the Berlinetta. And considerably rarer, since production amounted to just... 121 units. This one gets wire-spoked 'Borrani' alloys and a colour-matched front strip, and is believed to be one of only six Spiders to get a lick of 'Rosso Dino' paint complete with beige upholstery. It's also the last convertible Ferrari to use that famous Colombo engine. The trio concludes with the race-bred Prancing Horse: a Series III 'Competizione'. 15 were factory-built, and the one in question DNF'd at Le Mans in '74, but went on to win the GT Class at the Daytona 24 Hours the following year. There's pedigree, alright. Advertisement - Page continues below Changes over the standard Berlinetta include a front lip with vertical fins to boost aero, wider rear wheel arches and lighter body panels made of steel. Mechanically, there's an improved compression ratio and sharper timing, billeted steel pistons and connecting rods, plus revised exhaust manifolds. There's also four fuel pumps as opposed to two, and air ducts fitted ahead of the thicker stoppers for better cooling. That V12 also gets a hefty power bump to 450bhp, so it should be a good laugh on the various global classical events you can enter it into. Though we're not sure how you'd feel about lugging your precious $5.5m vintage racer around Cadwell Park on a rainy Thursday night… Top Gear Newsletter Thank you for subscribing to our newsletter.
