KDSA stresses need for education to empower individuals with Down syndrome

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 12: The Kuwait Down Syndrome Association (KDSA) organized a forum on World Down's Syndrome Day under the theme "Chromosome 21: Its Present and Future." The event, held on Tuesday and patronized by Dr. Amthal Al-Huwaila, Minister of Social Affairs, Family, and Childhood Affairs, aimed to highlight the importance of integrating individuals with Down syndrome into educational systems and promoting their significant role in society.
The forum, attended by representatives from relevant organizations, provided an opportunity to showcase the talents of individuals with Down syndrome and emphasize their remarkable social contributions.
Azdhar Al-Kandari, Deputy Chairperson of the Kuwait Down Syndrome Association, spoke to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) about the various lectures presented at the forum, including topics such as 'Using Artificial Intelligence Programs to Educate and Train Students with Special Needs,' 'Emotional and Behavioral Disorders in Down Syndrome,' and 'Down Syndrome and Obesity.' Al-Kandari emphasized the association's commitment to raising public awareness about rejecting bullying in all its forms, which can hinder the development and well-being of individuals with Down syndrome.
She also expressed her appreciation for the support provided by official bodies, particularly the Ministry of Social Affairs, under the leadership of Minister Dr. Amthal Al-Huwaila, as well as the International Islamic Charitable Organization and other organizations assisting the association's efforts.
Maryam Al-Kandari, Secretary of the Kuwait Down Syndrome Association, highlighted that the forum was a valuable platform for identifying the talents of individuals with Down syndrome. She also pointed to the exhibition held alongside the forum, which included participation from several organizations, such as the Charitable Organization, Ministry of Health, and public benefit societies, all of which demonstrated the contributions and impact of individuals with Down syndrome on society.
Al-Kandari reiterated the association's commitment to supporting individuals with Down syndrome in various areas, including workforce integration and societal inclusion. She also acknowledged the significant role of government agencies in empowering people with Down syndrome and enhancing their capabilities.
In a statement to KUNA, Eng. Bader Al-Sumait, Director General of the International Islamic Charitable Organization, expressed the organization's belief in the central role of individuals in building and revitalizing societies, particularly individuals with Down syndrome. He highlighted the charity's focus on providing education, training, and labor market preparation for people with Down syndrome.
Al-Sumait mentioned that the organization has supported 136 students with Down syndrome between 2022 and 2025 through educational and rehabilitation projects aimed at enhancing their skills and abilities. He also recognized the role of the "Irada" team for individuals with disabilities and the voluntary Human Construction Initiative, both of which provide services to individuals with Down syndrome.
