Negligence in R&B works exposed in Devanakonda

Hans India17-06-2025
Devanakonda: The bridge connecting Alarudinne and Valigonda villages in Devanakonda mandal of Kurnool district has once again turned perilous for commuters, as large potholes have reappeared on its surface—barely six months after the Roads and Buildings (R&B) department undertook repair works.
This bridge, situated on the crucial Kurnool-Ballari main road, spans across the Handri river and plays a vital role in inter-state transport between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
Constructed in 1940 during the British era at an estimated cost of Rs 1.2 lakh, the structure was originally designed to withstand vehicular loads up to 40 tonnes. An indicatordisplaying the load limit still stands as a relic of its historic significance.
For the past 85 years, this bridge has served as a lifeline for transportation, facilitating uninterrupted movement of goods and passengers.
However, time and lack of proper maintenance seem to be taking a toll on the ageing structure.
In a recent attempt to address safety concerns, the R&B department had spent Rs 2 lakh to fill the major potholes using hydraulic powder-based materials.
While this repair temporarily halted vehicular movement for a month, the relief was short-lived. Within just six months, the same craters have reappeared, subjecting daily commuters to severe inconvenience and raising alarming safety concerns. Adding to the danger, the protective sidewalls of the bridge have also sustained significant damage, increasing the risk of accidents. According to local estimates, over 400 vehicles, includingpassenger and goods carriers, use this bridge every day.
Locals express deep concern over the deteriorating condition of the bridge and the potential for tragic incidents.
'We're constantly worried—each time we cross the bridge, we wonder if an accident is just waiting to happen,' said a frequent traveler.
The resurfacing of potholes so soon after repair clearly indicates substandard work and lack of accountability. Citizens urge the government and the R&B department to take immediate and permanent measures—not only to ensure the bridge's safety but also to consider the long-overdue construction of a new bridge to support the growing vehicular load.
The crumbling bridge has become a symbol of administrative negligence, and unless urgent steps are taken, it may soon lead to a catastrophe that could havebeen prevented.

Bad news for Elon Musk as Tesla asked to pay Rs 21190320470 for..., company's autopilot tech under fire due to...

Elon Musk (File) Tesla accident: In a major setback for Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a US court has ordered the automaker to pay a whopping $243 million (about Rs 2,119 crore) to victims of a fatal 2019 accident, which was reportedly caused by a malfunction in the Tesla's patented autopilot driver-assistant technology. What did the victims say? The families of the victims have accused Tesla's autopilot system of being partly responsible for the crash that left 22-year-old Naibel Benavides Leon dead, while her boyfriend, Dillon Angulo sustained grievous injuries. According to the prosecution, the Tesla car, which was on Autopilot, collided with the victims' vehicle, which parked on the roadside as the young couple were star gazing late at night. The Tesla driver confessed he was distracted by his cell phone, but the jury believes that Tesla's malfunctioning autopilot tech was also partly responsible for the tragedy, and must pay damages to the victims. How much damages will Tesla pay? As per the court order, Tesla has been ordered to pay $200 million in punitive damages and $59 million in compensatory damages to Leon's family, while Angulo was awarded a $70 million compensation. The court observed that moral responsibility must be imposed if and when a tragedy is caused by technology malfunction, such as the failure of a driver-assist or autopilot system. It noted that companies must shoulder responsibility in such cases, even if human-error is involved. Notably, its believed that Tesla has previously settled similar cases out of court or had them dismissed before trial, however, this case breaks that pattern, and will encourage others to seek justice against big corporations. Did Tesla bury evidence of malfunction? Meanwhile, the victims' counsel also accused Elon Musk-led Tesla of hiding crucial evidence in the case, including video and data recorded moments before the fatal accident. Tesla told the court that the video footage did not exist, but a forensic expert managed to dig up the data, following which the company termed it as an 'honest mistake'. Why is this a concern for Elon Musk? The court order against Tesla comes at a time when Elon Musk is preparing to launch a fleet of driverless Tesla taxis in several US cities. The court ruling also brings Tesla's autopilot system, which it claimed has been improved since the 2019 accident, under further scrutiny.

Bengaluru: A Lamborghini Aventador sports car, which costs nearly Rs 10 crore, caught fire on a street in Bengaluru last evening. The sports car belongs to social media influencer Sanjeev, better known by his Instagram handle Nimma Mane Maga Sanju. Visuals of the supercar catching fire went viral. They showed flames on the rear side of the vehicle -- where the engine is -- and people pouring water to douse them. A fire extinguisher and buckets of sand are also seen in the video. Fortunately, no one suffered any serious injury in the incident. While some claimed that the sports car was gutted, Sanjeev later clarified that the vehicle had suffered minor damage. He identifies as a farmer and stands out for the elaborate gold ornaments he wears around his neck and hands. It is not clear yet what could have led to the fire in the Lamborghini car. In a similar incident in December last year, the sports car brand had made headlines when a Lamborghini Revuelto, also costing around Rs 10 crore, caught fire on Mumbai's Coastal Road.
