All you need to know about world's highest Chenab railway bridge inaugurated today
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the world's highest railway bridge, constructed over the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir. He also flagged off two specially designed Vande Bharat trains between Srinagar and Katra, marking the completion of a 42-year-old project aimed at connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country by rail.
This landmark achievement is expected to open up new avenues for growth, trade, and connectivity in the region, while also boosting employment and livelihood opportunities for local communities.
Here's all you need to know about the newly inaugurated bridge:
1. The Chenab rail bridge runs over the Chenab River in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. Located between Katra and Sangaldan on the Jammu-Baramulla line, the bridge was built at a cost of around Rs 1,400 crore.
2. It is the highest arch bridge in the world, with a deck height of 359 meters from the riverbed — making it 35 meters taller than Paris's iconic Eiffel Tower.
3. Connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country, the bridge forms a critical part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which is being developed at a cost of Rs 35,000 crore.
4. The Chenab railway bridge is a steel-and-concrete marvel spanning 1,315 meters across the river gorge. It consists of a 530-meter-long approach bridge and a 785-meter-long deck arch bridge (the part of the bridge on which vehicles run)
5. The project was overseen by the Konkan Railway Corporation, a division of Indian Railways. The design and construction were carried out by a joint venture involving Afcons Infrastructure, South Korea-based Ultra Construction & Engineering Company, and VSL India.
6. The design for the bridge's foundation protection was prepared by the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. IIT Delhi conducted the slope stability analysis, while both IIT Delhi and IIT Roorkee handled the seismic analysis. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) helped in making the bridge blast-proof.
7. Steel for the bridge was supplied by the Steel Authority of India, while Swiss company Mageba provided specialised spherical stopper bearings. The project involved the fabrication of 28,660 metric tonnes of steel and also included the construction of 26 kilometers of motorable roads.
8. Sophisticated Tekla software was used for the project, allowing detailed 3D modeling of the bridge and its structural components.
9. The bridge is designed for a lifespan of 120 years and can support train speeds of up to 100 km per hour. It is capable of withstanding earthquakes up to magnitude 8 on the Richter scale, as well as high-intensity explosions equivalent to 40 tonnes of TNT.
10. The steel structure is built to endure extreme weather conditions, including temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius and wind speeds of up to 266 km per hour.
11. Although the project was approved in 2008, construction was delayed for a time due to concerns over stability and safety in the challenging Himalayan terrain.

Stadium left unattended, no police protection: Karnataka BJP on stampede
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Karnataka mounted an attack on Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, days after 11 people died in the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede in Bengaluru. Karnataka Deputy Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Arvind Bellad alleged that the duo wanted to "take selfies" and "celebrate" the victory with RCB players. "After this big tragedy in Karnataka, more than 30 common citizens were injured, and 11 people lost their lives. The chief minister, Siddaramaiah, and the deputy chief minister, DK Shivakumar, are two culprits... Because they wanted to take selfies and wanted to celebrate the victory with the RCB players, the whole attention of the police and the officers was on them. They were busy giving protection to the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, whereas the crowd gathered at the Stadium was left unattended... There was no police protection. All the police officers were busy protecting the chief minister and their family... Siddaramaiah should resign," Bellad said. Senior BJP leader CT Ravi also called to fix the responsibility. "11 people died--speaking the truth about it, is that politics? Did we go eat dosa after hearing about the deaths? Who is responsible? Did we call everyone to Vidhana Soudha and felicitate them? Does RCB represent the state or Kannadigas? The CM and Deputy CM are responsible. Your political credit war caused this..." Ravi stated. Meanwhile, CM Siddaramaiah has ordered an increase in the compensation announced for the families of those who died in the stampede to Rs 25 lakh each. Earlier, the government had announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each. Earlier, top senior officials of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), Secretary A Shankar and Treasurer ES Jairam, tendered their resignations, taking "moral responsibility" for the stampede ahead of RCB team's felicitation after winning their Indian Premier League (IPL) title by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a tight final on Tuesday. Haryana: Chargesheet filed against Goldy Brar, 4 others in Gurugram grenade attacks case
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed charges in court against Canada-based gangster-terrorist Satwinder Singh alias Goldy Brar and four others for orchestrating grenade attacks on two Gurugram clubs in December, the agency announced on Saturday. The December 10, 2024 attacks targeted Warehouse Club and Human Club in Sector 29, with investigators linking the violence to a broader conspiracy by the banned Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) to spread communal disharmony across Haryana. The chargesheet names Sachin Taliyan, Ankit, Bhawish and US-based Randeep Singh alongside Brar. All accused except Brar and Randeep Singh have been arrested. The NIA investigations revealed that Brar, a designated terrorist under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, masterminded the conspiracy from his base in Brampton, Canada. The agency said the terror syndicate actively extorts money, raises funds, procures explosives and weapons, and intimidates civilians to threaten national security. Brar, a close associate of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, faces multiple terror cases. The NIA has already charge-sheeted him for the December 2023 murder of Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi, president of the Hindu right-wing Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena, in Jaipur. He is also wanted for orchestrating the May 29, 2022 assassination of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. Brar was designated a terrorist under UAPA in January 2024. From Canada, Brar allegedly supervises Bishnoi gang operations whilst assisting pro-Khalistan outfits including BKI in weapons smuggling, drug trafficking and targeted killings, the agency stated. How Ggm blasts are linked to Chandigarh A web of inter-state criminal links has emerged in the investigation into the Gurugram bar blasts, with UT police uncovering key connections to Chandigarh and Haryana's Hisar district. Two accused, Ajit and Vinay, played a direct role in the attacks carried out at two popular Sector 26 bars, acting on the instructions of gangster Randeep Malik. Ajit and Vinay, both Hisar natives, had allegedly delivered a bomb to a person for the Gurugram blasts and were arrested by Chandigarh police after a brief encounter in Hisar on November 29 last year. The duo was involved in hurling bombs at Seville Bar Lounge—owned by rapper Badshah—and De'Orra Dance Bar in Sector 26, Chandigarh, between 3:15am and 3:30am on November 26. Investigations revealed that gangster Randeep Malik, a Jind native now based in the USA, orchestrated the blasts. Malik directed the accused to collect explosives in Karnal and a pistol from Sahil, a murder accused lodged in Jind jail. The handover took place near Rohtak. According to Chandigarh police, Malik, previously booked in 2011 for assault and intimidation, recruits youth from Hisar and Bhiwani into crime. He advised the accused to turn off their phones and escape to Hisar and then Rajasthan after the blasts in Chandigarh. Malik coordinated the attack with gangster Goldy Brar, whose approval allegedly preceded the blasts, the cops said.

15 new arts and science colleges, but sans fresh recruitment faculty feel the heat in Tamil Nadu
CHENNAI: As announced in this year's budget, the state has inaugurated 11 new arts and science colleges for 2025-26 and CM MK Stalin said four more colleges will be opened soon. However, no fresh recruitment of staff, particularly teaching faculty, has irked the staff members who are already working in government arts and science colleges across the state. The higher education department will be spending around Rs 25.27 crore in the first year for running the 11 colleges, each of which will offer five new courses and admit 280 students. Though the department has created 12 teaching posts in each of these colleges for this year, the staff have not been freshly recruited, instead transferred from other colleges on deputation. Alleging that the 175 government arts and science colleges in Tamil Nadu, including the newly-inaugurated ones, are already facing a staff crunch due to non recruitment in the past 10 years, academicians have urged the government to focus on recruitment instead of running the show by temporary arrangements.
