Defender awards calls on South African Changemakers: £100 000, a vehicle and mentorship up for grabs

The Star13-05-2025
South African small-scale charities and non-profit organisations dedicated to conservation and humanitarian efforts are urged to enter the newly launched Defender Awards. This international initiative by the original British adventure brand, Defender, aims to support and champion local heroes and their initiatives as part of a substantial £1m global campaign.
Entrants from South Africa stand a chance to be one of the seven global winners who will receive a £100,000 bursary, a rugged and capable Defender vehicle to support vital front-line work in hard-to-reach locations, and invaluable mentoring support from a community of experts.
Entries are sought from programmes making a difference in one of four categories: Defenders of the Wild: Protecting endangered and at-risk species, from vultures to vital indigenous flora.

The Defender Awards initiative is specifically designed to support small-scale charities and non-profit organisations working on humanitarian and conservation projects at a grassroots level.
Mark Cameron, Managing Director, Defender, said: " Defender has a proud heritage of helping people make more of their world, spanning both humanitarian and conservation causes. Our enduring 70-year association with the Red Cross and our 20-year partnership with Tusk support established organisations, but we wanted a way of engaging with smaller-scale initiatives. We have launched Defender Awards to recognise and support local conservation and humanitarian heroes. It is international in scale but has a grassroots focus and will further Defender's rich history of supporting vulnerable habitats, species, and communities. ' Esteemed Panel to Adjudicate South African Entries
Adding significant local expertise, Defender has announced a prestigious panel to adjudicate entries from South Africa and select local finalists. The panel includes: Ross Holgate: Operations leader and mapping and navigation expert for the Kingsley Holgate Foundation, renowned for using adventure to improve and save lives through malaria prevention, distribution of reading glasses, and providing clean water to vulnerable communities.

Bryan Habana: Springbok legend, Defender ambassador, and founder of the Bryan Habana Foundation, which inspires young South Africans and supports social change through sport via the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation South Africa.
Janico Dannhauser, Brand Manager, Defender, said: ' Defender is renowned for forging enduring relationships with various organisations that exist for the primary goal of advancing the betterment of the world through humanitarian and conservation causes. Through the Defender Awards, and with the support of Ross, Ivy, and Bryan, we will be able to extend our reach to organisations at the cold phase of delivering humanitarian and conservation services. '
This initiative builds on Defender's legacy, which traces back to the first Series Land Rovers in 1948 and includes deployments with British Red Cross nurses in Kenya in 1954, and a 20-year collaboration with African conservation charity Tusk.
Charlie Mayhew OBE, Founder and President of Tusk, added: ' The new Defender Awards initiative represents a valuable opportunity for smaller organisations to begin their own relationships – and benefit from additional funding and expertise, as well as the 4x4 capability that is associated with Defender .' How to Enter
Small-scale charities and non-profit organisations from South Africa are encouraged to submit their entries.
Following the closing date, national judges, including Holgate, Wairimu, and Habana for South Africa, will select two entries in each of the four awards categories. This will create a 56-strong international shortlist, from which a judging panel of global experts will select the seven overall winners, with at least one winner from each participating country (South Africa, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Australia, and Japan).
This is a unique opportunity for South African organisations making a tangible difference on the ground to receive significant backing to amplify their impact.

Lory Park Zoo educates visitors on animal conservation

Some of the animals are rescues. The Lory Park Zoo says it is operating in a challenging environment compared to other animal sanctuaries in Gauteng as it aims to educate visitors about animal conservation. Located about 65km from Johannesburg in President Park, Midrand, the Lory Park Zoo is privately owned and receives no funding or subsidies from the City of Johannesburg. Both the Johannesburg and Pretoria Zoos are owned by their respective municipalities, which attract a lot of visitors because of the different species of animals they house. Animal welfare Lory Park Zoo manager Andre Le Roux told The Citizen that the zoo is a fraction of the size of Joburg and Pretoria, with fewer species, but visitors are in closer proximity to the animals. 'Some of our animals are rescues, some are part of conservation projects. We have owls, snakes, and other birds that visitors can interact with. We also have an enrichment talk for the big cats for visitors.' 'Our motto is educate, experience and enjoy, and we get a lot of compliments from the public that the zoo is clean.' Animals by sea Meanwhile, global animal welfare organisation Four Paws has called on the South African public to speak up against the inhumane practice of live animal exports by sea. This follows the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development's publication of the draft Regulations for the Exportation of Live Animals by Sea under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962. 'To ensure animal welfare concerns are heard, Four Paws has launched a dedicated e-action platform that allows members of the public to submit their objections quickly and easily. The deadline for submissions is 25 August 2025,' said Four Paws. Draft regulations Fiona Miles, director at Four Paws, said animals exported by sea suffer immensely during transport—enduring heat stress, motion sickness, injury, disease, harsh conditions, inadequate space, and the possibility of failed ventilation systems. 'The draft Regulations fail to adequately protect animals and allow for vague, unenforceable standards that will enable industry to self-regulate. Once a ship is at sea, South Africa's laws no longer have jurisdiction, leaving animals without protection. 'These Regulations offer little more than false assurance. The only way to truly protect animals from the horrific suffering associated with live export is to prohibit the practice entirely,' said Miles. WIFE of Durban plane crash pilot pays emotional tribute

The wife of veteran South African pilot Andrew Blackwood-Murray who was killed in a tragic plane crash off the coast of Durban on Thursday, has paid an emotional tribute. Blackwood-Murray, 61, was performing a display in his ZS-AEC Extra 300 aircraft as part of an airshow linked to the Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) Global Summit 2025, hosted at Virginia Airport, when the plane crashed into the ocean just before 14:00. Emergency services and eyewitnesses quickly responded, with reports of the plane plunging into the sea near Suncoast Beach. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), eThekwini lifeguards, Police Search and Rescue, and other agencies launched a joint operation, which remains ongoing as at the time of publishing. 'The NSRI rescue craft Spirit of Surfski 6 will be deployed to assist in the ongoing search and provide a platform for Police and Metro divers conducting scuba operations,' said NSRI duty coxswain Lorenzo Taverna-Tunisan. Battery Beach and surrounding areas have been closed to the public as wreckage continues to wash ashore and search teams expand their efforts. Blackwood-Murray, well-known within aviation circles, was regarded as a world-class pilot and true gentleman. He was celebrated not just for his elite flying skills, but also for his warmth and mentorship within the aviation community. Kyla Blackwood-Murray took to Facebook on Saturday to pay tribute to her husband, writing: 'Yesterday I said goodbye to my most favourite boy in the whole wide world. 'It was the call I have been dreading my whole life. But I always said I would rather he go doing the things he loves the most. I just didn't realise he would have left so soon. 'He was my world. We did everything together and we had so many plans. We were going to grow old and be the most awesome geriatrics together. 'He has taken away the biggest piece of my soul and I don't know how I am going to live without my wingman. 'He brought me more joy than I ever imagined possible. He was always there for me helping me become the best version of myself. 'I am beyond heartbroken. Just to have one more day with him. If only. 'My baby may you soar the skies and visit all the amazing places you had on your bucket list. 'You rocked my world. You gave me meaning and purpose and I don't know how I am going to do life without you. 'Thank you for loving me completely. I am devastated. You will always be my person. Forever and always Andrew Blackwood-Murray.' 'Andrew, your spirit will forever soar in the skies you loved,' shared respected media personality and close friend, John Walland, who remembered him as 'a warm and passionate man whose skills touched so many lives.' Others reflected on his humility and approachability, regardless of how busy he was. 'Gonna miss you. A gentleman, an amazing pilot… He will certainly leave a gap in the airshow display calendar,' wrote Venessa Richardson. 'My heart bleeds, Andrew. You were such a gentleman. I'm glad I had the pleasure of sharing a classroom with you,' added Ryan Douwie. As the search continues, tributes to Andrew Blackwood-Murray serve as a reminder of the deep personal and professional impact he made throughout his life. His passion for flight, dedication to airshows, and mentorship of the next generation of pilots leaves behind a legacy that will not be forgotten. Authorities have asked the public to remain sensitive to the situation and to allow recovery teams the space and support needed as the operation progresses.
