Real Madrid appoint Alonso as manager on three-year contract
MADRID: Xabi Alonso has been appointed Real Madrid manager, the LaLiga club said on Sunday as the Spaniard returns to the Santiago Bernabeu where he spent six seasons as a player and won several trophies. Alonso has signed a three-year contract until June 2028 and the 43-year-old replaces Carlo Ancelotti, who took charge of his last game on Saturday.
With Ancelotti finishing his second stint at Real without winning a major trophy, Real moved quickly to change coaches after the veteran
Italian agreed to coach Brazil. Alonso had been in charge of Bayer Leverkusen and confirmed he would be leaving the German club this month.
The Spaniard took charge of Leverkusen in October 2022 and guided them to the double last season as they lifted their first Bundesliga title, without losing a game. They also won the German Cup and reached the Europa League final. He had a contract at Leverkusen until 2026 but the club said they had granted his wish to terminate his deal at the end of the season.
Alonso will be presented as Real coach on Monday and will take charge from June 1, ahead of the Club World Cup which starts in the United States next month.
The former Spain international joined Real in 2009 from Liverpool and made 236 appearances for them, winning a LaLiga title, two Copa del Rey trophies and the club's long-awaited 10th European crown.
He began his coaching career at Real's youth academy where he managed the Under-14 team during the 2018-19 season, winning the league and the Champions tournament.
He took charge of Real Sociedad's reserve team before making the big step up to take the Leverkusen job.
Alonso will hope to follow in the footsteps of another Real Madrid midfielder, Zinedine Zidane, who returned to coach the Spanish club and won three Champions League titles in a row.
Under Ancelotti, Real will finish second in LaLiga behind Barcelona, who also beat them in the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey finals this season.
Real were knocked out of the Champions League as holders in the quarter-finals by Arsenal.
Alonso's first test will be the Club World Cup where they are in a group with Saudi side Al Hilal, Mexican club Pachuca and Austria's RB Salzburg in the new 32-team tournament that kicks off on June 14. — Reuters

PARIS: Three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek set up a blockbuster French Open semifinal clash with world number one Aryna Sabalenka on Tuesday, as reigning men's holder Carlos Alcaraz powered his way into the last four. Alcaraz blew away American 12th seed Tommy Paul for the loss of just five games in the night session on Court Philippe Chatrier. The Spaniard needed just one hour 34 minutes to dismantle Paul 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 and set up a last-four meeting with Italy's Lorenzo Musetti. The pair exchanged consecutive breaks of serve early in the second set, before Swiatek forced the breakthrough at 5-5 with a powerful forehand down the line. AlCARAZ, MUSETTI REMATCH Swiatek is aiming to become the first woman to win four straight Roland Garros crowns since Suzanne Lenglen 102 years ago. But I'm happy for the challenge," said Swiatek, after reeling off her 26th win in a row at the French Open. Both players have shared the number one ranking between them since April 2022. Griezmann to stay with Atletico Madrid until 2027
MADRID: France's 2018 World Cup winning forward Antoine Griezmann has extended his Atletico Madrid contract until 2027, the Spanish club announced on Monday. "Griezmann and Atletico have reached a deal to renew the French footballer's contract until June 30, 2027," said Atletico in a statement. Griezmann, 34, is Atletico's all-time top scorer with 197 goals over two spells at the club and his previous deal was due to run until 2026. The veteran forward has struggled for form in 2025, last finding the net in February as his team finished third in La Liga, ending the season trophyless. Griezmann, who scored in France's 2018 World Cup win over Croatia, signed for Atletico from Real Sociedad in 2014. The striker, who retired from international football last year, won the Europa League in 2018 and twice finished a Champions League runner-up with Atletico, before joining Barcelona in 2019. Griezmann struggled with the Catalan giants, winning only a Copa del Rey before returning to Atletico on loan in 2021, eventually making the switch permanent. Real Madrid pay fee to sign Liverpool's Trent before Club World Cup
Real Madrid: Real Madrid have signed Trent Alexander-Arnold on a six-year deal, the LaLiga club said on Friday, paying Liverpool a fee to release the England defender from his contract a month early to allow him to join before the Club World Cup. Alexander-Arnold, who joined Liverpool when he was six and made 354 appearances for the Premier League side since his senior debut in 2016, said earlier this month he would leave the club once his contract expired on June 30. However, Real have signed Alexander-Arnold before his Liverpool contract ended, making him available for the Club World Cup to be played from June 14-July 13 in the United States. "Liverpool will receive a fee for his services, with the deal to be concluded once the window opens on June 1," Liverpool said in a statement, with British media reporting Real paid the Premier League champions 10 million pounds ($13.48 million). Newly-appointed Real coach Xabi Alonso will hope Alexander-Arnold's inclusion solves the club's defensive woes, with right back Daniel Carvajal among five defenders out with injuries.
