Tiny space rock confirmed as lunar fragment after two-month Earth stay
A space rock that spent two months tagging along with Earth as a "mini-moon" has been revealed to be a fragment of our very own moon.
The object, named 2024 PT5, was discovered on August 7 and lingered in Earth's gravitational pull from September 29 to November 25. Despite its small size—just 33 feet in diameter—it went largely unnoticed by even the most powerful telescopes.
Initially, scientists speculated that the mini-moon could be a piece of the moon that was knocked off during an asteroid impact. Further research has confirmed this theory, with astronomer Teddy Kareta from the Lowell Observatory in Arizona pointing to silicate materials found on the object, which are commonly associated with the moon.
The mini-moon's unique composition and behavior suggested it wasn't an ordinary asteroid but rather a piece of lunar rock that made an occasional appearance in Earth's orbit. According to Kareta, the object was likely dislodged from the moon only a few thousand years ago.
The mini-moon is set to depart Earth's orbit on Monday, drawn away by the stronger pull of the sun's gravity, but it will return for a brief visit in January. Its next return to our skies won't occur until 2055, giving scientists plenty of time to improve their telescopes in preparation.

A vaccine for gonorrhoea is now available at sexual health clinics in England as part of a world-first scheme. The vaccination programme is expected to save the NHS £7.9 million over the next decade and combat increasing levels of antibiotic-resistant strains of the disease. The move aims to tackle rising levels of the sexually transmitted infection (STI) after cases in England topped 85,000 in 2023, the highest since records began in 1918. The free jab will be on offer from Monday to patients at the highest risk of the sexually transmitted infection, including gay and bisexual men with a recent history of multiple sexual partners or a bacterial STI. The vaccine is an existing jab, known as 4CMenB, that is currently used to protect people against the meningococcal B disease, a serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and sepsis. It is used in the routine childhood programme and given to babies at eight weeks, 16 weeks and one year. The programme is targeted to those most at risk and could prevent up to 100,000 cases. Gonorrhoea disproportionately impacts specific communities, such as those in deprived areas, people of black Caribbean ethnicity, and gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men, according to the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI). Patients getting the gonorrhoea vaccine will also be offered jabs for mpox, human papillomavirus (HPV), and hepatitis A and B at their appointment. Ashley Dalton, the minister for public health and prevention, said: 'Rolling out this world-leading gonorrhoea vaccination programme in sexual health clinics in England represents a major breakthrough in preventing an infection that has reached record levels. 'This government's world-first vaccination programme will help turn the tide on infections, as well as tackling head-on the growing threat of antibiotic resistance. The organization worked hand in hand with the Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD), the Indiana Gaming Commission and Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control to rescue the dogs in the area, as it was hit with temperatures that reached approximately 110 degrees. At the first residence, responders "found dogs panting in filthy hutches and cages," the news release said. "Despite the scorching heat, many of the dogs had no access to water, and several had significant scarring consistent with dogfighting," the release continued, adding: "Responders discovered a shed containing dogfighting paraphernalia, including two treadmills and a stand typically used in dogfighting operations to restrain dogs for breeding." 'Between the suffocating heat, filthy conditions and bodies covered in scars — it's incomprehensible. Yet these dogs still greeted us with wagging tails and hopeful eyes,' said Samantha Chapman, the Indiana state director of the Humane World for Animals. She continued, 'We are deeply grateful to the Fort Wayne Police Department for intervening in this case and giving these dogs a chance at the lives they deserve.' Humane World for Animals has since relocated the dogs "to a safe, confidential location where responders and volunteers will provide much-needed care and treatment," according to the release. The search and seizure was part of an ongoing investigation by the FWPD. "Dogfighting is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison for fighting dogs or for possessing, training, selling, buying, delivering, receiving or transporting dogs intended for use in dogfighting," Humane World for Animals said in its news release. In a statement, Fort Wayne Police Chief Scott Caudill said those involved "successfully shut down a large-scale dogfighting operation in our community."
