Houston Texans: Fans react to Shaq Mason's release ahead of free agency
Shaq Mason has played his final down in a Houston Texans' uniform.
According to multiple reports, the Texans have informed Mason he will be released ahead of the 2025 season. The team is designating the veteran offensive lineman as a post-June 1 cut, the source said, which means they will save $9.4 million in cap space for the 2025 season.
That money can't be used in free agency next week, but it could be essential in locking up All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. long-term after a dominant season. Houston plans on entering discussions with him and third-year defensive bck Jalen Pitre ahead of a contract year.
Mason, who joined Houston via trade from Tampa in 2023, was great during his first season while helping keep C.J. Stroud upright. At the right guard spot, he stabilzed the offensive line while helping Houston reach the playoffs for the first time in four season.
But regression set in big time in 2024. His 10.5 sacks allowed were the second-most among guards during the regular season. After returning from injury ahead of the playoffs, Mason was a factor in allowing eight sacks in the divisional round loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Texans DeMeco Ryans has said that the team needed to upgrade its offensive line and that it would be a focus in free agency and the draft. Fans expected the move to come, though the timing was always set to be a surprise.
Here's some of the reactions from the Texans' fan base.

Charles Barkley on NBA Finals Game 4: 'The Pacers blew this game... this is going to hurt'
The Indiana Pacers had a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter and looked in control and on their way to a 3-1 series lead in the NBA Finals. But then the offense went cold and stagnant, and the OKC Thunder closed like the best team in the NBA they are, finishing the game on a 12-1 run to snatch the game away with a 111-104 win and return home with a split in Indianapolis and homecourt advantage back in their hands. Charles Barkley didn't pull any punches in his postgame analysis on NBA TV. "No. 1, they gave it away," he said. "I thought you saw the difference between All-Stars guys and really good players and superstars. Shai (Gilgeous-Alexander) brought this thing home. Like, 'Yo big fella, bring this home.' And I have no idea what the Pacers were doing on the offensive end. Me and Grant (Hill) were going crazy like, 'Yo man, get it to (Pascal) Siakam, he's your best 1-on-1 player. They didn't even run a play for him... It was so frustrating. Grant, we can say all we want to about Oklahoma City — the Pacers blew this game." Siakam, who led the Pacers in scoring with 20 points, took just one shot in the fourth quarter (a missed 3-pointer with 10 minutes left). "This is going to hurt. This game is going to hurt the Pacers because they had this game under control, they were playing well. OKC was like, "OK, we might be in trouble,' then all of a sudden, they let them get close..."

Twins' Royce Lewis suffers left hamstring strain late in another rout
As if the result weren't bad enough, Royce Lewis suffered an injury late in Friday's losing effort. Routed by their opponents for the fourth time in nine days, the Minnesota Twins suffered perhaps an even bigger loss when the young third baseman pulled up while running out a base hit late in a 10-3 defeat at the Houston Astros. After losses of 12 and 13 runs to the Texas Rangers earlier this week, the Twins dropped to 36-33. Advertisement Lewis exited Friday's game with a left hamstring strain after singling into the left-field corner in the ninth inning. He homered earlier and finished 2-for-4. 'We don't know a lot right now,' Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters in Houston. 'He does have a left hamstring strain of some kind. I can't tell you how severe at this time. He actually tested relatively well after the game upon examination in the training room. We're going to bring him in (Saturday) and check him out, see how he comes in. A lot of times, you learn a lot just by how the guy shows up the next day, how he can move around, what he's capable of doing. That'll tell us a lot.' The occurrence is the latest in a series of leg injuries for Lewis, who has twice torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Lewis missed the first 35 games of this season after suffering a left hamstring strain March 16. He also missed 58 games of the 2024 season with a right quad strain suffered when running the bases on Opening Day. After his return, Lewis missed 16 games because of a right adductor strain. Despite missing the final 10 games of the 2023 season with a hamstring strain, Lewis returned and starred in the playoffs, hitting four home runs in 22 at-bats, including two off Kevin Gausman in Game 1 of an American League wild-card victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. After a lengthy absence to start the 2025 season, Lewis struggled at the plate. But Friday's appearance was yet another sign Lewis was getting back on track. Since he was given a day off to work in the cage on June 2, Lewis was 11-for-28 with five doubles and a homer. He went hitless in his first 15 at-bats after returning on May 6. He also snapped an 0-for-32 stretch with a run-scoring double in a June 3 victory at the Athletics.

Altuve and Melton each have 3 RBIs as Astros beat Twins 10-3
HOUSTON -- Jose Altuve and rookie Jacob Melton drove in three runs each as the Houston Astros jumped on Chris Paddack early and cruised to a 10-3 win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. Paddack (2-6) tied career highs by allowing 12 hits and nine runs — eight earned — in just four innings for his third straight loss. Houston rookie starter Colton Gordon (2-1) gave up six hits and two runs with five strikeouts in a career-high six innings. Jeremy Peña tied a season-high with four hits and rookie Cam Smith had two hits and two RBIs as the AL West-leading Astros won their third straight. Willi Castro, Royce Lewis and Ty France all hit solo homers for the Twins, who were blown out for the third time in four games after losing to Texas 16-4 Tuesday and 16-3 Thursday. Lewis, who missed the start of the season with a hamstring strain, pulled up as he was running to first base on a single in the ninth inning and was replaced by a pinch-runner. Manager Rocco Baldelli said Lewis has a strained left hamstring but that they don't know how severe it is and expect to know more Saturday. The Astros got to work early in this one. The bases were loaded with two outs in the first when Smith hit a two-run single to center field to make it 2-0. Melton followed with a single to right field to drive in another run. There were runners on first and third with one out in the second when Altuve's double scored two to make it 5-0. The Twins loaded the bases with two outs in the third but Carlos Correa grounded out to end the threat. Melton hit a two-run triple with no outs in the bottom of the inning to push the lead to 7-0. A sacrifice fly by Mauricio Dubón made it 8-0. The Twins got on the board with Castro's two-out homer in the fourth inning. Altuve homered to left-center to start the bottom of the inning and make it 9-1. Smith's two-RBI single in the first that gave Houston the lead for good. The Astros had four doubles to give them 15 in their last three games. Astros RHP Hunter Brown (8-3, 1.82 ERA) opposes Twins RHP Joe Ryan (7-2, 2.96) on Saturday.
