India Today5 hours ago

An evacuation flight carrying 160 Indians -- who had crossed into Jordan from Israel on Sunday -- was diverted to Kuwait on Monday after Iranian strikes on US bases triggered widespread airspace closures.Flight number J91254, which departed from Amman around 2:30 p.m. on Monday en route to Kuwait and then to Delhi, had to change course mid-air and return to Kuwait following Iranian attacks in retaliation for the US bombing of Iranian nuclear installations on June 22.advertisementThe Islamic Republic had threatened to retaliate in the wake of the American decision to join forces with Israel in attacking Iran's nuclear facilities in Fordo, Natanz and Esfahan.
The evacuees have been placed in a holding area at the Kuwait airport, awaiting further instructions. "We're being looked after, but the wait continues," said Arvind Shukla, a post-doctoral fellow onboard the flight, speaking to PTI over the phone. The Ministry of External Affairs in Delhi and the Embassy in Kuwait are keeping in touch with the authorities and closely monitoring the situation.Despite being on the way since early Sunday, the evacuees, who were among the first batch under Operation Sindhu launched on June 19 to evacuate Indians in Israel, are maintaining calm and waiting for further instructions, Shukla said.- EndsWith inputs from PTI

Meanwhile, as the conflict widens, Iraqi military on Tuesday claimed one of its military base was stuck by a drone. Tensions flared up in the West Asia after Israel launched attacks on Iran on June 13, triggering destruction and casualties in both the nations. Watch: Iranian missiles hit US base in Qatar; explosions light up skies

Iran missile attack on US miliatry base in Qatar In a fresh development in the Iran-Israel conflict, Iran on late Monday fired a barrage of missiles at the US-operated Al Udeid air base in Qatar. The attack was Tehran's retaliation to American strikes on it's three key nuclear facilities on Sunday. Residents in Doha and nearby Lusail reported hearing thunderous explosions as the night sky was pierced by projectile trails and interception flashes. Video captured the moment air defenses were deployed to intercept missiles in the skies above Doha. The footage showed the missiles illuminating the night as the air defense systems neutralised the threat. US President Donald Trump downplayed the Iranian attack, calling it a 'weak response'. 'Iran has officially responded to our Obliteration of their Nuclear Facilities with a very weak response, which we expected, and have very effectively countered,' he said. 'There have been 14 missiles fired — 13 were knocked down, and 1 was 'set free,' because it was headed in a nonthreatening direction.' Amid the rising tension, Trump also made a surprise announcement declaring a 'complete and total ceasefire' between Israel and Iran. He gave out the details on the phased de-escalation over the next 24 hours. Calling the recent conflict the '12-day War,' Trump posted on Truth Social, "CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!," Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. Yogi Adityanath lauds Bhadohi carpet industry's resurgence

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday lauded artisans for the Bhadohi carpet industry's 'resurgence'. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath in Bhadohi on Monday. (PTI PHOTO) He noted the famed carpet industry of Bhadohi has led to Uttar Pradesh gaining a 60% share in India's carpet exports. He emphasised the state's support to boost the industry's global footprint. 'Ten years ago, this industry was in a poor state. But local artisans have revived it with encouragement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As a result, Uttar Pradesh now accounts for 60% of India's carpet exports, with Bhadohi contributing the largest share,' Adityanath said. He stressed that the industry's Geographical Indication (GI) tag and the development of the Carpet Expo Mart were the results of coordinated efforts by both the Central and state governments. The chief minister said efforts are on to encourage ancient handicrafts and give them a new identity in the international market. Reviewing development works with public representatives in Bhadohi, the chief minister gave many gifts to the district, including immediate approval to the demand for construction of a bridge on the Ganga at Dengurpur near Sitamarhi and an ROB on the railway line between Gopiganj-Mirzapur. The chief minister directed officials to expedite the development of an already approved mini-stadium and said an auditorium that has been sanctioned at the district headquarters would now be developed as a multipurpose hall. Inspecting the district hospital, he said that it had become a living monument of the apathy and corruption of the previous government. 'We have started the work here again. Inspected the work of setting up a new 50-bed critical care centre. The government has provided funds for the renovation of the old building of the district hospital. The Rajya Nirman Nigam has been given the target of completing it by December 2025. Efforts are being made to establish a medical college in Bhadohi in the PPP mode. Preparations are being made to meet the standards for this,' he said. He said efforts were underway to prioritise residential facilities for government officers and staffers. The status of outsourced sanitation workers under the panchayati raj department was being reviewed, and steps would be taken to improve connectivity to roads linked with the district headquarters, Adityanath said. Work on revival of the Morwa river is being done in Bhadohi, he said. Mentioning the Kashi Naresh Government PG College, he said if there is more than 50 acres of land, we will also work to take it forward as a state university, adding that this will be a big achievement for Bhadohi. The agricultural faculty has been set up there, he said.
