Chicago Tribune03-05-2025
The roster of jockeys slated to ride in the 151st Kentucky Derby represents both extremes on the experience scale.
Five jockeys — Javier Castellano, Brian Hernandez Jr., Flavien Prat, Joel Rosario and John Velazquez — who have already won the Run for the Roses will seek to do so again Saturday.
Meanwhile, ranging in age from 25 (Joseph Ramos) to 43 (Juan Vargas), there will be five jockeys in Saturday's race who have never before ridden in the cavalry charge that is a Kentucky Derby.
Below is what you need to know about each rider (jockeys are listed in alphabetical order) in Saturday's race.

Stoke can set the tone for a better season

Stoke City got exactly the start they needed on day one of the Championship season. The first half promised much, Stoke were dominant, had more than 70% of the ball and looked comfortable in defence. It seemed like a matter of time before the deadlock was broken. That it was Derby who got the first goal was a surprise that brought back bad memories. Too often last season Stoke threatened throughout games but ultimately lost because they weren't clinical enough in the final third. This new Stoke side feels different already. They were more intense, dynamic and determined to play on the front foot than the team we saw last season and Lewis Baker's quick equaliser kept the crowd on board. The fans will play a part this season and were loud from the minute Steven Nzonzi came out to wave before kick-off as he begins a second spell at the club with a 2018 World Cup winner's medal to show for his travels. The volume from the stands was rewarded with a Divin Mubama header from a brilliant Tatsuki Seko cross and a goal from fellow debutant Sorba Thomas, assisted by another new signing in Jamie Donley. Mubama's movement and work rate was excellent throughout and Aaron Cresswell added his calm experience in addition to quality delivery from out wide as all of the new signings impressed. An EFL Cup tie at home to lower division opposition (Walsall) and an away game against troubled Sheffield Wednesday gives The Potters the opportunity to turn a great opening day into a an opening week that sets the tone for a much better season.

Alex Weir's EDGA agony ends with dramatic Amateur Tournament win at the Kahkwa Club

EDGA president Dave Hewett announced Alex Weir's unprecedented achievement during the Aug. 10 awards ceremony for its Amateur Tournament. Weir became the first golfer in the competition's 105-year history who placed in the top three for five straight years. That would have been agonizing for the former Kahkwa Club employee to hear if he hadn't been holding its championship trophy for the first time. Weir, who also lost the EDGA's 2021 and 2022 Match Play finals, finally prevailed in one of its majors. He survived a dramatic dual, one that wasn't determined until the tournament's last shot. Garcia, who was four strokes out of first place at the start of the round, rallied to tie Weir at 7-under as they approached the par-4 18th hole. Each were on that green in two, but Garcia's three-putt bogey all but ended the possibility of a playoff. Weir, 36, ended his four-year run of near-misses when converted an easy par chance. The celebration began seconds later when three-year-old Carson and two-year-old Austin ran onto the course and hugged their father. Amy Weir also was in the gallery for her husband's victory, which he ranked first for his golf career. 'It's always hard to win the first one of these (EDGA tournaments),' Alex Weir said, 'and then there were all those (former) second-place finishes. And then Mike played especially well on the back nine. I was playing well, but he had all the momentum. Yeah, I started to wonder then if (an EDGA win) was ever going to happen. 'That's why this one is up there.' Weir closed with an even-par 72 for a 54-hole total of 209. Garcia, also a Kahkwa member, was the Amateur's silver medalist despite red numbers each round. His 6-under 210 consisted of 70-71-69. Matt Barto, the EDGA's 2022 Match Play victor, was third at 2-under 214. Former Cathedral Prep golfers Evan Rowane and Breckin Taylor tied for fifth at 3-over 219. Rowane was the tournament's 2024 winner. Taylor, thanks to June's Match Play win at Lake Shore Country Club, sought a sweep of the EDGA's 2025 majors. Rangers' Adolis Garcia makes jaw-dropping barehanded catch

Adolis Garcia might've made the catch of the year. With one out in the top of the second inning and the Rangers leading 2–0, Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos — who tends to find himself in the middle of big moments — slapped a shallow fly ball into right field. Garcia charged in at full speed, attempting a basket catch below his beltline. 3 Adolis García juggles and then catches a fly ball off the bat of Nick Castellanos of the Phillies during the second inning at Globe Life Field on August 10, 2025 in Arlington, Texas. Getty Images The ball bounced off his glove, ricocheted off his leg, and appeared destined to drop, which would've been bad news for the Rangers. However, Garcia, maintaining his focus, reached out with his bare left hand and miraculously secured the ball before it hit the ground. It was an unbelievable, immediate 'catch of the year' candidate. The catch proved to be a big one in terms of maintaining the Rangers' lead, but the Phillies went on to win the contest 4-2, continuing to build their National League East division lead over the slumping Mets. Garcia and the Rangers dropped to 60-59 on the season. This season, the two-time All-Star and former Gold Glove winner has a .661 OPS and is struggling individually. Garcia, however, is still packing some pop. 3 Adolis Garcia won a Gold Glove for his play in the outfield during the 2023 season, and he also is a two-time All-Star, playing in the game in both 2021 and 2023, respectively. Getty Images 3 Rangers right fielder Adolis Garcia holds up the ball for the umpire Manny Gonzalez, right, after making a sliding catch on a fly out by Philadelphia Phillies' Nick Castellanos as Rowdy Tellez (44) looks on in the second inning AP The 32-year-old Cuban has 16 home runs and 63 RBIs this season and has 96 hits on the year. Garcia also has 23 doubles.
