Kolkata:
Amit Shah
said on Sunday the Centre will take a "holistic approach" to criminal justice from Jan 2026, through which India's criminal justice system will be "based on evidence rather than argument".
The Union home minister was speaking at the inauguration of a Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Rajarhat. The lab, spread across six acres, was built with an investment of Rs 90 crore.
"The Indian govt has started creating clusters of three-four states and developing their criminal justice system to become more evidence-based using CFSL facilities. We will develop a holistic approach that will be effective from Jan 2026.
Each police station will be able to avail the advantages of CFSL facilities," Shah said.
"The entire criminal justice system will be based on evidence rather than argument. Accused will not be freed only due to benefit of doubt," he added. The Union home minister said the CFSL network will assist states as state forensic science labs will be able to take expert opinion from CFSL facilities.
"Our transaction, communication, identity and basic details have already gone online.

The nature of crime is changing fast, and we have to use science to stay ahead of criminals. Methods like mobile forensic, call detail analysis and psychological profiling are proving to be of immense help. We have already given a legal base to processes like using technology in crime scene investigation and trial," Shah added.
He further said that changed evidence laws, under the BNSS, now make it mandatory for the forensic science team to visit the crime scene for crimes that are liable for punishment for seven years and above.
Shah announced that nine new campuses of the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) will be built with an investment of Rs 1,300 crore. Seven new CFSL facilities will be built with an investment of Rs 860 crore across UP, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Bihar.
"We will bring development projects for forensic capacities with an investment of Rs 2,080 crore. A national forensic data centre will be prepared with an investment of Rs 200 crore.
We will use AI to analyse data in these centres," Shah said.
"All 17,184 police stations are connected by Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems . We are monitoring them online too. We will need forensic experts and infrastructure. Each district will be provided a forensic mobile van. We have already established the NFSU. We have 16 premises now, and 10 more NFSU colleges will come up. We will have 36,000 students holding diplomas, degrees and PhDs. We will have a steady supply of trained manpower," he added.

Malaysia thanks Indian delegation for anti-terror briefing, reaffirms peace commitment

The Speaker reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to peace, and thanked the delegation for the briefing on India's approach in dealing with terrorism at large, it said. The delegation, led by JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, met with Speaker of the House of Representatives, Parliament of Malaysia (Dewan Rakyat), YB Tan Sri Dato' (Dr) Johari bin Abdul and briefed on India's unwavering policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism, and sought cooperation of Malaysian parliamentarians in the collective fight against terrorism, the High Commission of India here said in a X post. Kuala Lumpur, Jun 3 (PTI) Malaysia on Tuesday reaffirmed its commitment to peace as it thanked an all-party parliamentary delegation from India for the briefing on New Delhi's approach to combatting terrorism. The delegation also met with the Parliamentary Special Committee on International Relations and International Trade, chaired by YB Wong Chen, Member of Parliament and Chairman of Parliamentary Special committee on International relations and International Trade, and briefed about the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam and highlighted India's zero tolerance policy towards terrorism. 'Discussions focussed on ways to cooperate in the collective fight against terrorism,' the Indian mission said. The delegation held a 'productive meeting' with representatives of the Southeast Asia Regional Centre for Counter-Terrorism (SEARCCT) led by Datin Paduka Nur Ashikin Mohd Taib, Director General of SEARCCT, here. It elaborated India's steadfast and principled position of zero tolerance towards terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, especially in light of the recent cross-border terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the High Commission said in another X post. SEARCCT's role as a regional centre for promoting counter-terrorism initiatives, and its role in India-Malaysia Joint Working Group on Counterterrorism, was highlighted by Jha. 'Discussions centred around regional synergy through SEARCCT, particularly in legal frameworks, counter-terror financing, community resilience, as well as promoting studies on the ways to address cross-border terrorism,' the mission said. Apart from Jha, the delegation includes Aparajita Sarangi (BJP), Abhishek Banerjee (TMC), Brij Lal (BJP), John Brittas (CPI-M), Pradan Baruah (BJP), Hemang Joshi (BJP), former external affairs minister Salman Khurshid, and former ambassador Mohan Kumar. The delegation to Malaysia is one of the seven multi-party delegations India has tasked to visit 33 global capitals to reach out to the international community to emphasise Pakistan's links to terrorism. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives. India carried out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7, following which Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. The Indian side responded strongly to the Pakistani actions. The on-ground hostilities ended with an understanding of stopping the military actions following talks between the directors general of military operations of both sides on May 10. Elderly man gets 20-yr RI for raping 9-yr-old girl

1 2 Kendrapada: Additional district-cum-special judge (Pocso), Kendrapada, on Tuesday sentenced a 70-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a 9-year-old girl in Nov 2024. Judge Pragyan Paramita Roul also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict, a neighbour of the girl. Failure to pay the fine would result in another year of imprisonment. Special public prosecutor Manoj Kumar Sahu said the verdict was based on testimonies from seven witnesses, including the survivor, and medical reports. The court also directed the Odisha State Legal Services Authority (OSLSA) to provide compensation of Rs 6 lakh to the girl, who was then a Class III student. The crime came to light when the survivor's mother filed an FIR on Nov 29, 2024, alleging that the man had raped her daughter the previous evening when she was alone at home. The elderly man had allegedly threatened to kill the girl if she revealed the incident to anyone. Police arrested the man under sections 65 (rape on a woman under 16 years of age) and 331 (house trespass or house-breaking) of BNS, along with Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.

Kids put Modi in grandfather category immediately: US Second Lady Usha Vance

WASHINGTON: Second Lady of the United States Usha Vance described her visit to India in April "as the trip of a lifetime" for the family and said her three young children have put Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the "grandfather category." Vice President JD Vance undertook his first official visit to India in April and was accompanied by Usha Vance and their three young children Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel. "It really was the trip of a lifetime for us," Usha Vance said, recalling the visit to India during a fireside chat here on Monday at the eighth edition of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit. The Vances were in India from April 21-24 and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi before travelling to Jaipur and Agra. Usha emphasised that meeting the PM Modi "was really very special." "We'd actually had a chance to meet him before," she said adding that when her kids, who were sleep-deprived when travelling in Paris, saw the Prime Minister, they "saw an Indian man with a white beard and white hair, and they just put him in the grandfather category immediately. So they are very into him." "They just love him. And he really cemented his status by giving our five-year-old a birthday present that day," she said. The Vances and PM Modi had met in France in February during the AI Action Summit. She recalled that when the Vance family visited PM Modi's residence in Delhi, her kids ran up to him and were hugging him. "He was just incredibly kind and generous to them." She noted that the conversation between her husband and the Prime Minister was "very productive" and "it was a real opportunity for us to kind of cement that personal relationship that they have, which I think is only to the good."
