Man arrested after allegedly attacking 12-year-old girl with hammer
Police arrested a 39-year-old man at his home in the area about two hours later.
Johor Baru North police chief Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh said the victim's parent lodged a police report regarding the assault at 5.19pm on the same day.
The suspect tested positive for methamphetamine and has a history of criminal offences, including drug-related cases.
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of the alleged assault has been widely shared online.
In the viral clips, the girl is seen screaming and entering the lift with a bloodied head wound.
While the actual moment of the assault was not captured, her cries can be clearly heard in the recording.
Balveer said the victim sustained a torn scalp and swelling on her right hand. She was rushed to Sultanah Aminah Hospital and is currently in stable condition.
The suspect has been remanded for seven days until Aug 2.
The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon.
The offence carries a punishment of up to 10 years in prison, a fine, whipping, or any combination of the three.
Balveer also urged the public not to take matters into their own hands or circulate unverified information.
