Egypt Expands Energy Investment Horizons with $245M in New Gas Exploration Deals

Egypt Today25-06-2025
CAIRO – 25 June 2025: In a major step to attract foreign investment and strengthen its energy sector, the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) has awarded six new exploration blocks to leading international companies, according to the Ministry of Petroleum.
The awarded concessions—four offshore in the Mediterranean Sea and two onshore in the Nile Delta and North Sinai—are expected to generate $245 million in new investments and lead to the drilling of at least 13 exploratory wells.
The offshore blocks, offered through Egypt's 2024 global bid round on the Egypt Upstream Gateway (EUG), were allocated as follows:
North Sidi Barrani Offshore & North West Atoll Offshore: Awarded to a consortium of Chevron Egypt and BG (Shell), with each block slated for two wells.
North Ras El-Tin Offshore: Granted to IEOC Production (Eni), which will drill three wells.
East Alexandria Offshore: Assigned to Cheiron Egypt, also planning three wells.
Onshore, two blocks were awarded:
North Tanta (Nile Delta): Awarded to IPR, with two wells planned.
Al-Fayrouz (North Sinai): Given to Brenco, which will carry out 3D seismic surveys and drill one well.
These developments underscore Egypt's continued push to diversify its energy sources and enhance exploration activity.
Additional offshore exploration opportunities in the Mediterranean are still open for bidding through the EUG, with submissions closing on July 2, 2025. Results will be announced following bid evaluation.
In parallel, Egypt's natural gas supply chain is facing short-term disruptions. A government official confirmed to Al Arabiya that the resumption of gas supplies to factories has been delayed by another week, due to halted imports from Israel.
Current Israeli gas flows to Egypt have dropped to 40–50 million cubic feet per day, significantly below the 650 million initially expected earlier in the week.

Microsoft employee protests over Israel military ties lead to 18 arrests

AP — Police officers arrested 18 people at worker-led protests at Microsoft headquarters Wednesday as the tech company promises an 'urgent' review of the Israeli military's use of its technology during the ongoing war in Gaza. Two consecutive days of protest at the Microsoft (MSFT) campus in Redmond, Washington called for the tech giant to immediately cut its business ties with Israel. But unlike Tuesday, when about 35 protesters occupying a plaza between office buildings left after Microsoft asked them to leave, the protesters Wednesday 'resisted and became aggressive' after the company told police they were trespassing, according to the Redmond Police Department. The protesters also splattered red paint resembling the color of blood over a landmark sign that bears the company logo and spells Microsoft in big gray letters. 'We said, 'Please leave or you will be arrested,' and they chose not to leave so they were detained,' said police spokesperson Jill Green. Microsoft late last week said it was tapping a law firm to investigate allegations reported by British newspaper The Guardian that the Israeli Defense Forces used Microsoft's Azure cloud computing platform to store phone call data obtained through the mass surveillance of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. 'Microsoft's standard terms of service prohibit this type of usage,' the company said in a statement posted Friday, adding that the report raises 'precise allegations that merit a full and urgent review.' In February, The Associated Press revealed previously unreported details about the tech giant's close partnership with the Israeli Ministry of Defense, with military use of commercial artificial intelligence products skyrocketing by nearly 200 times after the deadly October 7, 2023, Hamas attack. The AP reported that the Israeli military uses Azure to transcribe, translate and process intelligence gathered through mass surveillance, which can then be cross-checked with Israel's in-house AI-enabled targeting systems. Following The AP's report, Microsoft acknowledged the military applications but said a review it commissioned found no evidence that its Azure platform and AI technologies were used to target or harm people in Gaza. Microsoft did not share a copy of that review or say who conducted it. Microsoft said it will share the latest review's findings after it's completed by law firm Covington & Burling. The promise of a second review was insufficient for the employee-led No Azure for Apartheid group, which for months has protested Microsoft's supplying the Israeli military with technology used for its war against Hamas in Gaza. The group said Wednesday that the technology is 'being used to surveil, starve and kill Palestinians.' Microsoft in May fired an employee who interrupted a speech by CEO Satya Nadella to protest the contracts and in April fired two others who interrupted the company's 50th anniversary celebration. On Tuesday, the protesters posted online a call for what they called a 'worker intifada,' using language evoking the Palestinian uprisings against Israeli military occupation that began in 1987. On Wednesday, the police department said it took 18 people into custody 'for multiple charges, including trespassing, malicious mischief, resisting arrest, and obstruction.' It wasn't clear how many were Microsoft employees. No injuries were reported. Microsoft said in a statement after the arrests that it 'will continue to do the hard work needed to uphold its human rights standards in the Middle East, while supporting and taking clear steps to address unlawful actions that damage property, disrupt business or that threaten and harm others.'

Ukraine Secures $30 Bln Drone Deal with US

Israa Farhan Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed a landmark defense agreement under which Ukraine will supply the United States with combat drones valued between $10 billion and $30 billion. The announcement was made during a press conference, according to RBC-Ukraine. Zelensky emphasized the strategic importance of the deal, noting that it strengthens both Ukraine 's defense industry and its strategic partnership with Washington. He added that Kyiv is also seeking to acquire ten Patriot air defense systems from the US, with funding to be provided by European partners. Thus far, Ukraine has secured commitments for three systems, two from Germany and one from Norway, while discussions with the Netherlands remain ongoing. The agreement follows earlier reports of a potential 'mega-deal' under which the US would purchase Ukraine's battle-tested drones in exchange for Kyiv increasing its procurement of American weapons. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliya Sviridenko later revealed that Zelensky and US President Donald Trump had reached a political-level accord to establish a joint drone production venture in Ukraine, with the resulting systems to be purchased by Washington. On 16 July, Trump confirmed that the first deliveries of Patriot missile systems had begun as part of a broader arms arrangement involving NATO. He reiterated that Washington will maintain the flow of military equipment to Ukraine provided Europe continues to share the financial burden, with NATO coordinating the process. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated
