"Cannot Win Such A Big Series On...": Ex-India Star's Timely Reminder For Shubman Gill And Co

NDTV9 hours ago

Former cricketer Madan Lal has expressed confidence in the team's chances, highlighting the strength of India's bowling unit. Speaking about the upcoming challenge, Lal said, "We will see what happens when the Test series starts from June 20, but India can perform well because we have the best bowling attack. If you have a good bowling attack, then you can win Test matches." India, who have often struggled with consistency in overseas conditions, especially in England, will need to fire on all fronts. Madan Lal emphasised that relying on individual brilliance alone won't be enough to win a series of this magnitude. "You cannot win such a big series on the basis of one player. Other players will also have to contribute," he said.
He acknowledged Jasprit Bumrah's importance in the squad, calling him the best in the business.
"Bumrah is an important player, he is the number one bowler, but other players will also have to take wickets," he noted.
While the bowlers are expected to play a critical role, Lal also stressed the need for India's batting unit to step up.
"If our batsmen score runs in this series, then we will win," Lal asserted.
With the series opener just days away, all eyes will be on how the Indian team balances both its pace attack and batting depth in swinging English conditions.
The five-match Test series will take place from June 20 to August 4, with matches scheduled at Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston (Birmingham), Lord's and The Oval (London), and Old Trafford (Manchester).
India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.

BCCI told to hold Vaibhav Suryavanshi's India call-up: 'Sachin Tendulkar hit 100s on Ranji, Duleep, Irani Trophy debut'

Since making his Indian Premier League debut, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has become a known name in world cricket. What made the Rajasthan Royals batter special is that he is only 14 years old. He is the youngest debutant in IPL history and the youngest Indian List A debutant. Initially, when RR broke the bank for the youngster, purchasing him for ₹1.10 crore (from a base price of ₹30 lakhs) at the IPL 2025 mega auction, there were question marks over the move, with many also feeling that it was for commercial and marketing reasons. The youngster initially didn't even feature in RR's matches in the first half of IPL 2025, and it was only when skipper Sanju Samson picked up an injury that young Suryavanshi got his opportunity. He made his IPL debut against Lucknow Super Giants on April 19, and the rest… as they say… is history. In his debut match, Suryavanshi smacked 34 runs off 20 balls, offering a glimpse of his aggressive brilliance with a first-ball six. As it turns out, it just didn't end there. On April 28, he became the youngest player to score a century in the IPL, at 14 years and 32 days old, hammering 101 off 38 balls vs Gujarat Titans. What made it sweeter was that he got to his hundred in only 35 deliveries, making it the second-fastest century in IPL history, only behind Chris Gayle (30 balls), and the fastest by an Indian – Yusuf Pathan. Suryavanshi's performance in the IPL, coupled with his recent 190-run knock off 90 balls in India U-19's preparatory match ahead of their upcoming England tour, has also led to comparisons with none other than the great Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar enjoyed a similar start, catching everyone's attention with his domestic cricket performance long before the IPL was even thought of. At the tender age of 16, Sachin made his international debut for India in a Test match against Pakistan in Karachi in November 1989. We all know what Tendulkar went on to achieve in his career, winding up his career 25 years later as arguably the greatest batter in the history of the game. Suryavanshi's recent performances have also led to many fans calling for his Indian senior team debut, with comparisons with Sachin only intensifying on social media. Some also feel that Suryavanshi can be a good addition to the Test team, because of his intent and pedigree. Speaking to the Hindustan Times, Raju, who was also the BCCI selector for India's 2007 World T20 squad, feels fans and the board will need to wait for some time before Suryavanshi is seen in India clothing. "Yes, yes, he will take a lot of time. He has to be one of those guys who needs to well in U-19 World Cups. He has to perform quite a bit in domestic cricket. Four-day games. And we can give time. See, talent-wise, we've already seen him, what he can do with a white ball, right?" Raju said. Raju also downplayed comparisons with Tendulkar, reminding the world of the legendary player's domestic performance before his India debut. "It depends on the consistency, right? We're a firm believer. We might talk about somebody like Sachin, right? First, Ranji Trophy debut, he got 100. Duleep Trophy, he got 100. Rest of India, he got 100, right? All three-day games. All four-day games. All five-day games. So, like that, I think when you know the talent, we should give him enough time to go and play, do well, and you feel that he's really good enough and he can perform, why not? We can still bring him in," he said. Suryavanshi is currently with the India U-19 team in England, eager to leave behind a good impression. Born on March 27, 2011, in Bihar, and according to reports, Suryavanshi started playing cricket at four years old. His first coach was his father. Vaibhav joined an academy at the age of nine and first came under the scanner when he played at the Vinoo Mankad Trophy as a 12-year-old for Bihar's U-19 squad. Last year, at the 2024 ACC U-19 Asia Cup, Suryavanshi smacked 76 off 46 balls versus the UAE, and 67 off 36 deliveries against Sri Lanka in the semi-finals.

Punjab Cricket Association secretary Dilsher resigns citing personal reasons

Nearing the end of his three-year tenure as secretary of the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), 35-year-old Dilsher Khanna resigned from the post on Sunday, citing personal reasons. The elections to choose the next PCA apex council for the 2025-2028 term are scheduled for mid-July. In a letter sent to the PCA president, council and members, Dilsher wrote: 'Due to personal reasons, I hereby resign as honorary secretary of the Punjab Cricket Association with immediate effect.' In his letter, Dilsher highlighted Punjab's cricketing and administrative achievements during his tenure, including hosting the IPL successfully in 2024 and 2025 at the New Chandigarh stadium, a feat that drew praise from across the cricketing fraternity. Last year, he was part of the Indian team management for the T20 World Cup held in the USA and the West Indies, where India eventually lifted the trophy under Rohit Sharma's captaincy. He also played a pivotal role in introducing administrative reforms within PCA, notably launching the association's own T20 league, Sher-e-Punjab, two seasons ago. Recognising his contribution, BCCI appointed him to the Women's Premier League (WPL) panel a few months ago. It remains to be seen whether Dilsher will take up another administrative role in BCCI following his resignation from PCA.

Why Kuldeep Yadav Has Taken Over Rohit Sharma's Seat In India Bus: 'It's Just...'

Last Updated: Kuldeep Yadav has taken Rohit Sharma's seat on the team bus but not to replace him. He reveals the wholesome reason behind it. Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav has taken over Rohit Sharma's seat in the team bus since the latter's Test retirement, but not to usurp his 'place' but only to spend more time with his 'Jaddu bhai', Ravindra Jadeja. The left-arm wrist spinner revealed the story while speaking in a press conference on Sunday (June 15), five days before India's first Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy Test against England in Headingley. Although Kuldeep made his debut much before Rohit's appointment as captain, he has often spoken about being quite close and how the former opener backed him during his difficult phases. Kuldeep said it was 'important' for him to be in touch with his 'spin partner' Jadeja because Ravichandran Ashwin has also taken retirement. 'Uspe main baithta hu (I sit there)," Kuldeep said during the press conference, speaking about Rohit's seat. 'I can never take Rohit bhai's place. It's just that I am spending more time with Jaddu bhai. It's important as a spinner for me because Ash bhai is not there. I have learnt a lot from him. When I started my cricket, I have played with both of them. Very lucky to have Jadeja as my spin partner. I am enjoying it," Kuldeep explained. Ashwin was the first to take retirement (across formats) last December. Rohit hung his Test boots in early May and then Virat Kohli followed within a week. India have appointed Shubman Gill as the new captain, who'll lead a quite young team to England, where the visitors haven't won a Test series since 2007. top videos View All Kuldeep said the team will miss seniors but said it was an opportunity for the new generation to step up. 'When the seniors go away, their absence is always felt. Virat bhai and Rohit bhai have done so much for the team. They will be missed, but it's also an opportunity for youngsters to perform well. But yes, I am sure everybody would be missing the seniors. But the youngsters are excited for the challenge. Batsmen are working very hard in the nets and preparing really well," Kuldeep stated.
