Japan's Nikkei hits more than one-month high on optimism around trade talks
TOKYO: Japan's Nikkei share average hit a more than one-month high on Friday, as risk appetite was lifted by hopes of progress in US trade talks and domestic firms' better-than-expected outlook.
The Nikkei rose 1.49 per cent to 37,478.58 by the midday break, its highest level since March 27, and is set to post a 1.76 per cent weekly gain.
The broader Topix rose 1.46 per cent to 2,738, and was set for an 11-session rally - its longest since October 2017.
"Investors see that the market slump in April was the worst, and the environment not just for equities but for bonds is only getting better as more compromises on trade talks could be possible," said Hiroyuki Ueno, chief strategist at Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management.
US President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday announced a limited bilateral trade agreement that leaves in place Trump's 10 per cent tariffs on British exports.
Financial markets are now awaiting the outcome of preliminary US-China trade talks due to begin on Saturday in Switzerland.
Trump said on Thursday he expects there to be substantive negotiations between the two countries, and predicted that punitive US tariffs on Beijing of 145 per cent would likely come down.
"The market was also relieved that the outlook of Japanese firms, including Toyota, is not severely affected by the US tariffs," said Ueno.
Investors were once pessimistic about the corporate outlook amid uncertainties about the impact of US tariffs.
Among individual stocks, NTT Data surged 14 per cent after NTT said it would take the subsidiary private by purchasing the shares it does not already own at 4,000 yen per share.
Ajinomoto rose 6.24 per cent after the food and healthcare company announced a 100-billion-yen ($686.2 million) share buyback.
On the other hand, air-conditioning maker Daikin Industries fell 5.03 per cent to become the worst percentage loser on the Nikkei, and also weighed on the Nikkei the most,

Selangor Aero Park to advance Msia's regional air cargo hub ambitions
Transport minister Loke Siew Fook expressed confidence that more private sector players will invest in expanding aircraft operations at KLIA. (Bernama pic) SEPANG : The development of the Selangor Aero Park (SAP) will strengthen Malaysia's ambition to become a leading air cargo hub in Asean, said transport minister Loke Siew Fook. He said the 600-acre project aligns with the government's strategy to enhance Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as a regional logistics and aerospace centre. Loke said KLIA holds a unique strategic advantage, with a vast land area of 100 sq km and strong connectivity, making it an ideal location for such a development. 'We possess the ingredients and prerequisites unmatched by any other Asean country. KLIA has the potential to expand to five runways (beyond the existing three). 'There is no other airport in the region of this scale,' he said at a press conference following the groundbreaking ceremony for SAP earlier today. Located within the KLIA Aeropolis, SAP carries a gross development value of RM2.3 billion and will be executed in phases to ensure a well-structured, future-ready investment ecosystem. The project is expected to contribute RM55.2 billion annually to the aerospace industry and create over 32,000 high-income jobs by 2030. Elaborating further, Loke said Malaysia has also secured support from China to position KLIA as a regional cargo hub for the Asean market. 'China has agreed to support KLIA as its cargo gateway for the Asean region. This is a highly strategic and significant partnership. 'We also aim to attract investments from aerospace supply chain industries, which includes the production of aerospace components, related technologies, and MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) services,' he said. He expressed confidence that more private sector players will invest in expanding aircraft MRO operations at KLIA. To support this vision, he said the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia is currently reviewing KLIA's air traffic control system to address the anticipated increase in both passenger and cargo flight traffic. 'We anticipate a significant increase in air traffic at KLIA, involving both passenger and cargo aircraft. A comprehensive redesign of the air traffic control system is currently under way to enhance operational efficiency and optimise traffic management,' he said. On a separate matter, Loke added that an announcement on the KLIA Aerotrain project will be made soon.

Trump attacks Musk as public feud escalates over tax-cut bill

REUTERS/Nathan Howard/File Photo WASHINGTON (Reuters) -President Donald Trump lashed out on Thursday against his ally Elon Musk, saying he was "disappointed" by the billionaire's public opposition to the sweeping tax-cut and spending bill that is at the heart of Trump's agenda. "Look, Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore," Trump said in the Oval Office, in his first direct response to Musk's criticism. "He said the most beautiful things about me, and he hasn't said bad about me personally, but I'm sure that'll be next. But I'm, I'm very disappointed in Elon. I've helped Elon a lot." Even as Trump was speaking, Tesla CEO Musk unleashed a series of critical responses on X, the social media site he owns. "Without me, Trump would have lost the election," he wrote. "Such ingratitude." Shares of electric vehicle maker Tesla were down 9% following the outbursts, to their lowest level since late February. The back-and-forth made it clear tensions had reached a boiling point between the world's most powerful man and the world's richest man, after weeks of speculation that they were headed for a clash of egos. Musk, whose other companies include rocket company and government contractor SpaceX and its satellite unit Starlink, spent nearly $300 million in the 2024 election in support of Trump and other Republican candidates. Starting on Tuesday, the tech executive unleashed a series of blistering attacks against what Trump calls his "big, beautiful bill." Musk called it a "disgusting abomination" that would deepen the federal deficit, amplifying a rift within the Republican Party that could threaten the bill's prospects in the Senate. Nonpartisan analysts say the bill could add $2.4 trillion to $5 trillion to the nation's $36.2 trillion in debt. Trump asserted that Musk's complaints were motivated by the proposed elimination of consumer tax credits for electric vehicles. Trump suggested that Musk was upset because he missed working for Trump, who gave Musk a praise-filled sendoff last week after the billionaire oversaw the president's federal bureaucracy cost-cutting campaign. "He's not the first," Trump said. "People leave my administration ... then at some point they miss it so badly, and some of them embrace it and some of them actually become hostile." Musk had signaled that he planned to step back from politics, saying last month he planned to substantially scale back his political spending. Friction between him and Trump could hurt Republicans' chances of keeping control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections. 'KILL THE BILL' Musk also wrote, "Slim Beautiful Bill for the win," adding "KILL the BILL." He followed that up by saying he was fine with Trump's planned cuts to electric vehicle credits as long as Republicans rid the bill of "mountain of disgusting pork" or wasteful spending. Musk came into government with brash plans to cut $2 trillion from the federal budget. He left last week having cut only about half of 1% of total spending. Musk's Department of Government Efficiency eliminated thousands of federal jobs and cut billions of dollars in foreign aid and other programs, causing disruption across federal agencies and fueling a wave of legal challenges. His increasing focus on politics provoked widespread protests at Tesla sites in the U.S. and Europe, driving down sales and adding to investor concerns that Musk's attention was too divided. In departing the administration, Musk made it clear he planned to focus more of his time on his business empire. Following Trump's remarks, a White House official, speaking on background, underscored the shift in the once-close dynamic between Musk and Trump. "The president is making it clear: this White House is not beholden to Elon Musk on policy," the official said. "By attacking the bill the way he did, Musk has clearly picked a side."
