Kerala: Three officials suspended over lapses in road maintenance

Malappuram (Kerala), Aug 20, (PTI) Three PWD officials, including an executive engineer, have been suspended for serious lapses in road maintenance in Malappuram, PWD Minister P A Muhammad Riyas said on Wednesday. Riyas announced the suspension of the officials through a Facebook post. The suspended officials are the Executive Engineer of the Manjeri division, the Assistant Executive Engineer of the Perinthalmanna subdivision, and the Assistant Engineer of the Perinthalmanna section. According to Riyas, following complaints from the public, the Chief Engineer of the Roads Wing was directed to conduct an inquiry. The suspension was initiated on the basis of the Chief Engineer's report. Riyas said that despite receiving multiple complaints from the public, the officials failed to take any action to carry out maintenance work. The minister has also directed the PWD Vigilance Wing to initiate a probe against the suspended officials. Riyas explained that the government had introduced the Running Contract Scheme to ensure timely road maintenance across Kerala. 'However, during inspections this year, gross negligence in carrying out the works was noticed in certain areas. In Malappuram, even after funds were allocated, the technical sanction and tendering process were not initiated on time. The lapse was identified in the Perinthalmanna subdivision under the Manjeri division of the PWD Roads Wing," Riyas said. The minister reiterated that road maintenance works would continue without compromise, with public participation playing a crucial role in the process. He added that under the Running Contract Scheme, blue boards had been installed on roads with the phone numbers of the concerned officials displayed for the public to lodge complaints. If no action is taken after a complaint is raised, the matter can be escalated, he said. PTI TBA TGB KH view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Haryana teacher's death: Mobile internet suspended in Bhiwani, Charkhi for 48 hours

Chandigarh: Amid widespread public outrage over the death of a 19-year-old teacher, the Haryana government on Tuesday ordered the suspension of mobile internet, and bulk SMS and dongle services, while allowing voice calls, in Bhiwani and Charkhi Dadri districts for 48 hours. Manisha's body was found in a field in Bhiwani on August 13. She had been missing since August 11, after leaving school, purportedly to inquire about admission at a nursing college. The death caused massive outrage, with people blocking key roads in the district and the opposition parties, including the Congress, demanding a CBI probe. Although the order does not make a reference to the teacher's death, sources said it has been issued in the wake of developments pertaining to the case. Issued by Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, Sumita Misra, the order said that internet suspension will be in force from 11 am on August 19 till 11 am on August 21. 'It has been brought to my notice by ADGP/CID, Haryana and Deputy Commissioner, Bhiwani & Charkhi Dadri vide their requests dated August 19 that there is an apprehension of causing tension, annoyance, agitation, damage to public & private property and disturbance of public peace & tranquillity in the district Bhiwani & Charkhi Dadri... This order is issued to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order,' it said. The order further stated that the internet could be misused to spread inflammatory material and false rumours through social media or messaging services to disrupt peace and damage public assets. 'In order to stop the spread of misinformation and rumours through various social media platforms, such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter on mobile phones and SMS for facilitation and mobilisation of mobs of agitators and demonstrators who can cause serious loss of life and damage to public and private properties by indulging in arson or vandalism and other types of violent activities,' it said. Meanwhile, the emergence of a 'suicide note' in the death case on Monday turned the investigation on its head. Bhiwani Superintendent of Police Sumit Kumar had said the note was found near Manisha's body in a bag, which also had her Aadhaar card and other documents. He also said that there was proof of Manisha buying insecticide. 'In the viscera sample, the presence of insecticide has been confirmed in the body. So, there is self-purchase, there is a suicide note, there is poison in the body,' he said. The playschool teacher's family members, however, have insisted that she was murdered. The opposition parties have also flayed the BJP-led state government, claiming that the alleged murder was proof of a breakdown of law and order under the saffron party.

Invest Rs 21,000 to earn Rs 20 lakh monthly? Viral videos of FM are fake

Social media videos recently claimed that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has launched a scheme that can turn an investment of Rs 21,000 into monthly income of Rs 20 lakh. The videos are manipulated and fake, government authorities have clarified. What the viral videos claim Deepfake videos on Facebook and Instagram show Sitharaman seemingly endorsing an investment programme called QuantumAl. The videos say that: An investment of around Rs 21,000-22,000 can generate returns of up to Rs 60,000 in a single day. Investors could allegedly earn Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh per month using this 'smart trading platform'. The videos were shared widely and put people at risk of cyber fraud. PIB calls it fake The Fact Check Unit of the government's Press Information Bureau (PIB) said: The videos are fake and digitally altered. Neither the Finance Minister nor the government has launched or backed any such scheme. The clips are an attempt to mislead the public and lure them into fraudulent investments. 'People should not fall prey to such claims,' PIB Fact Check said on X. Why scams are getting harder to spot With artificial intelligence and deepfake technology, cybercriminals are finding new ways to manipulate public figures' voices and images. Such manipulation makes fraudulent schemes appear more convincing than traditional online scams. Experts warn that many of these 'too good to be true' offers often involve high risks or outright fraud. What investors should keep in mind Financial planners advise investors to: Verify any investment claim directly from official government websites or trusted financial institutions. Be wary of schemes promising unrealistic returns within short periods.
