Brazil declared free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination

GMA Network4 days ago

SAO PAULO/PARIS - The World Organization for Animal Health has recognized Brazil, the world's leading beef exporter, as a country free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination, a Brazilian official and a spokesperson for the intergovernmental body said.
Brazilian lobbies representing some of the largest Brazilian meatpackers, including JBS JBSS3.SA, Minerva BEEF3.SA and Marfrig MRFG3.SA, said the development was historic, as it can help Brazil to win new markets.
"The new status will be announced on June 6 at a formal ceremony after a meeting between President Lula and WOAH Director General Emmanuelle Soubeyran," Brazil's Chief Veterinary Officer Marcelo Mota told Reuters on the last day of a WOAH conference in Paris.
Last year, Brazilian companies exported beef worth nearly $13 billion to countries including China, the United Arab Emirates and the United States, which has increased imports from Brazil because of a scarcity of cattle for slaughter.
The change in status can be used as a "strategic asset" in talks to open markets with strict standards, such as Japan, Brazilian beef lobby Abiec said in a statement. It added the Philippines and Indonesia have expressed interest in importing beef offal based on the health status.
"The new status also brings new challenges and responsibilities for all actors involved," Abiec said, alluding to maintaining the herd in adequate sanitary conditions.
The long-sought change had been anticipated by Brazilian authorities, including Agriculture Minister Carlos Favaro.
In May 2024, when Brazil announced the end of the vaccination cycle against foot-and-mouth disease, Favaro said it moved Brazil "to the next level of the world's health elite".
At the time, Brazil's goal of being free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination by 2026 was brought forward to 2025, the ministry said.

Mohd Rasfan/ Pool via REUTERS/ File photo KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has been discharged from hospital and will remain in the Malaysian capital for a few more days to rest, his office said on Saturday. Sultan Hassanal was admitted to hospital in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday due to fatigue, though his office had insisted the world's longest-serving monarch was in "good health". 'His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah ... praise be to God, is back at the Grand Hyatt Hotel after resting a few days at the National Heart Institute, Kuala Lumpur," his office said in an Instagram post on Saturday. "Medical experts have advised His Majesty to continue resting for a few more days before departing back to Brunei," it added. The 78-year-old sultan was in Kuala Lumpur for a summit with other Association of Southeast Asian Nations leaders. A statement from the Brunei prime minister's office -- a position held by the sultan -- on Tuesday said the monarch had been feeling tired and that Malaysian health experts had advised him to rest for a few days at the National Heart Institute. Sultan Hassanal ascended the throne in 1967. He is one of the richest people on the planet, and comes from a family that has ruled Brunei, a small Muslim nation perched on the north of the tropical island of Borneo, for more than 600 years. His decades ruling Brunei have seen the country gain full independence from Britain and living standards soar to among the highest globally. But his reign has also been marked by controversies including the introduction of tough Islamic laws legislating penalties such as severing of limbs and death by stoning. — Agence France-Presse

Iloilo City logs 1st mpox case; 4 others under observation

An undated colorized transmission electron micrograph of mpox virus particles (pink) found within an infected cell (yellow). Handout via REUTERS The Iloilo City Health Office (CHO) on Tuesday confirmed its first case of monkeypox (mpox), with four additional suspected cases currently under close observation. CHO head Dr. Mary Ann Diaz said that all five individuals are now in isolation and they are in stable condition. 'Since we now have one confirmed case, it is important to observe proper hygiene, wash hands frequently with soap, and use alcohol-based sanitizers,' Dr. Diaz said. Dr. Diaz also advised the public to avoid crowded places to minimize skin-to-skin contact and to seek early medical consultation and self-isolate if symptoms appear. Mpox, a viral disease similar to smallpox but generally less severe, is characterized by symptoms such as fever, severe headaches, muscle pain, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, low energy, and distinct skin rashes. According to the CHO, contact tracing is ongoing to determine possible exposures and ensure timely intervention. Specimens from suspected and probable cases are being processed in coordination with the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM). Dr. Diaz, meanwhile, emphasized that the confirmed case had no recent travel history, and there is currently no evidence of widespread community transmission. Case monitoring In an official statement issued on the same day, the City Government of Iloilo, through Mayor Jerry P. Treñas' spokesperson Joy F. Fantilaga-Gorzal, assured the public that the local government is taking swift and coordinated action. 'The City Health Office is on top of the situation,' Fantilaga-Gorzal said. "The CHO is working round the clock in coordination with national health agencies and the RITM to carry out specimen collection, laboratory testing, and case monitoring.' The mayor also directed all concerned departments to fully support the CHO's efforts. 'The City Government continues to implement proactive public health measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all Ilonggos,' the statement read. Authorities urged the public to remain calm, follow health advisories, and cooperate with ongoing containment efforts. The CHO is expected to release official advisories in the coming days to guide residents on preventive measures and proper responses to symptoms. —Sherylin Untalan/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
