The Trade Development Council (TDC) said on Thursday Hong Kong brands and products could make use of various online platforms to expand their business on the mainland.
The TDC said the "Hong Kong Brand" is popular north of the border after it surveyed about 2,200 mainland consumers in the middle-income bracket or above during the second and third quarter last year.
Around 78 percent of respondents gave products from the SAR an average score of 8.7 out of 10.
It said high-end products such as electronics, luxury items and clothes were most sought after by mainland consumers, and they were most willing to pay for children's products, goods for pets, food, and pharmaceuticals.
The TDC's principal economist Wing Chu said this was due to the reputation of the city's retail sector, which is known for its authenticity and high quality.
'Our position is at the mid- to high-end segment. In the mainland, the most important thing in this market is that the consumers pay attention to the product, whether it is genuine or not,' he said.
'For Hong Kong companies, they have the upper hand when tapping into this market because the Hong Kong name has a high recognition on the mainland,' he added.
Chu suggested local sellers should pay attention to different online platforms when promoting their goods, as mainland buyers often seek comments and product information through social media, but place orders through e-commerce platforms instead.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index ended trading for the day down 222 points, or 0.89 percent, at 24,858 but is up 1.2 percent for the week. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index fell 0.96 percent to 8,895 while the Hang Seng Tech Index fell 1.56 percent to 5,460. Tech majors were down 1.6 percent while materials shares were up 2.5 percent. Shares of semiconductors dropped nearly two percent, weighed by an eight percent fall in China's largest chipmaker SMIC after it reported weaker-than-expected second-quarter earnings. On the mainland, the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index ended down 0.12 percent at 3,635 while the Shenzhen Component Index was 0.26 percent lower at 11,128. Their combined turnover was 1.71 trillion yuan, down from 1.83 trillion yuan on Thursday. Shares related to the high-speed railway, mega-hydropower and electric power industries led gains while stocks related to the e-commerce and semiconductor sectors suffered major losses. The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.38 percent to close at 2,333. China stocks have steadily climbed this week, supported by upbeat trade and service activity data. "The market may be underpricing the risk of near-term deterioration in the US-China relationship," said Morgan Stanley strategists led by Laura Wang. The strategists urged investors to monitor developments in trade tensions and flagged the upcoming National People' Congress Standing Committee meeting and second-quarter earnings season as potential catalysts for market direction. In the interim, they prefer mainland-listed A-shares over Hong Kong-listed H-shares, citing stronger relative performance during periods of global market volatility. The association outlined more than 100 recommendations across seven key strategic areas, including deepening Hong Kong's connection with the Global South, supporting mainland enterprises and expanding the halal market. Talking to reporters afterwards, association president Wingco Lo said the discussion with the chief executive went well. "Our main goal this year is to facilitate, for example, economic growth, [and] also how to help our members to get a better business environment." Lo added that increasing promotion of Hong Kong brands on the mainland could also enhance competitiveness. On Sino-US trade tensions, the association encouraged its members to upgrade the branding of their products for sale in new and emerging markets. "We help our members to diverse their supply chain and [look] forward to more emerging markets."
