Tottenham admit 'error of judgement' after blocking accounts replying to post about Israeli player Manor Solomon's wedding - with player and wife left stranded amid Iran conflict
Tottenham have apologised for an 'error of judgement' after blocking some accounts that had replied to a post about Israeli player Manor Solomon's wedding on X.
Spurs shared a series of 'life updates' and photographs from various players, but some replies hurled abuse towards Solomon while others referenced the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Solomon married Dana Voshina in his homeland on Thursday but is now stranded there as Israel has closed its civilian airspace due to the threat of aerial attacks from Iran.
Social media staff working for Tottenham manually blocked certain accounts which had replied, but have since unblocked them.
The club said in a statement to The Times: 'We have been made aware of a number of X accounts that have been blocked manually by the club's social media team following posts aimed at one of our players related to the current conflict in the Middle East.
'Following an internal review, we recognise some of these posts do not meet the threshold of malicious communication defined in our policy and we acknowledge an error of judgment has been made in these instances. We have unblocked these accounts and are reviewing our internal procedures.
'The club should like to wholeheartedly apologise to those impacted. We continue to stand for peace and acceptance for all, while standing firmly against all forms of abuse and discrimination.'
Solomon, 25, was on loan at Leeds United last season and scored 10 goals as Daniel Farke's side won the Championship title.
Tottenham shared a photo of him as part of a selection including multiple players. In the past few days, alongside Solomon, they have had 'big life updates,' as Spurs wrote.
James Maddison and his girlfriend Kennedy Alexa are expecting another pair of twins, Richarlison and his partner Amanda Araujo have had a baby, and Dejan Kulusevski has got married to fellow Swedish footballer Eldina Ahmic.
According to the Times, Tottenham have an automated process for blocking accounts that direct abuse at their players.
However, these particular posts did not reach the level of 'mailcious communications' required in the club's opinion, but all the same the originators were blocked.
Their statement continued: 'Tottenham Hotspur is proud of the rich diversity that exists within all our communities and amongst our global fanbase. Abuse and discrimination of any kind has no place at our club, within our game or within wider society.
'In line with our published sanctions and banning policy, the club reserves the right to take action against individuals using discriminatory and/or threatening or abusive language towards players, whether in the stadium or online.
'This may extend to reporting, removing or hiding comments and, in some instances, blocking offending accounts — on all social media platforms other than X, this is an automated process carried out via an online tool deployed by the club.'
Solomon is due back for pre-season training with Tottenham in early July but is unable to fly out due to the airspace closing down.
'We are constantly in regular dialogue with all our players regarding their wellbeing and welfare,' a spokesperson told the BBC.
He and Dana, who have been together for seven years, married at the Kahi Events Resort in Israel, where they threw an extravagant party.

Carlos Alcaraz ‘super excited' for Emma Raducanu dream-team – as Spaniard progresses at Queen's
A fortnight out from Wimbledon, with All England Club defending champion Carlos Alcaraz beginning his grass court campaign in the 27C sunshine at Queen's Club, it is highly unusual for another Grand Slam to steal the limelight. Yet in New York, they don't care what feathers they ruffle on the streets of Kensington or Southfields. Earlier this year, the US Open announced a new-look mixed doubles tournament to take place in the week preceding the two-week major. With a winning purse of $1million, top singles players have been encouraged to participate in a two-day, quick-scoring format. For the tradition of Grand Slam tennis, it is quite the radical shake-up, while for doubles specialists, some reliant on the earnings of mixed tennis, it amounts to something close to a slap in the face. Yet on these shores, there's no doubting where the main stardust pairing lies. Five-time major winner Alcaraz, the sport's hottest property right now, is set to compete in a box-office duo alongside British No 1 Emma Raducanu. As such, with the greatest of respect to Alcaraz's first-round opponent at Queen's – Australian lucky loser Adam Walton – the hot topic in the press room was not the Spaniard's solid if unspectacular 6-4 7-6(4) win, his 14th victory in a row. It was the formation of 'AlcarCanu'. 'She's going to be the boss!' he said, with a wide smile in his press conference. 'The US Open came to us and gave us the opportunity to play mixed doubles and I'm super excited about it. It's going to be great. The second was similarly nip-and-tuck, with Walton cleaning the lines and, after three uncharacteristic Alcaraz errors, the Australian was one point away from the set. Yet if his spectacular Paris comeback showed us anything, it is how Alcaraz can reach another stratosphere at the big moments. Four irretrievable first serves saw him weave his way out of trouble. To a tiebreak they went, where one quickfire exchange at 4-4 at the net saw Alcaraz come out on top, with a backhand volley which dipped perfectly below the baseline. That mini-break was enough; he'd claim the next two points on serve, crisply sealing his spot in the second round with a trademark forehand winner crosscourt. While Alcaraz was pushed and prodded, second seed Jack Draper, who beat Alcaraz here last year, wasted no time in his first match on grass. As temperatures rose (one spectator in the stands fainted), Draper cranked through the gears stress-free in a dominant 77-minute outing. The British No 1, now world No 6 heading into the Wimbledon fortnight and pushing for a top-four seeding, started the match with a statement first point, cleaning the line with an on-the-run forehand winner. Starting how he means to go on, Draper won 10 of the last 11 games and secured a dominant 6-3, 6-1 victory with an ace up the T against unorthodox American player Jenson Brooskby. Much to the delight of the British crowd. 'Good to be home,' Draper wrote on the courtside camera, as he looks forward to a stretch of the season he can spend down the road in Putney. After a comfortable opener, a tougher match awaits for the 23-year-old in the last-16 on Thursday, in the form of big-hitting Australian Alexei Popyrin. But what of his partnership with China's Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng in New York? 'I think it'll be fun to get out there and play with her,' he said, of a duo formed through their IMG agency. 'I'll definitely play. It's a good format for the players to prepare for the US Open, having a shot at playing with another top player. Qinwen is a great player and has a really good game.' Asked why an all-British pairing with Raducanu did not come to fruition, Draper was magnanimous in his offering. 'A wise person once told me you should find the best partner,' he said. 'And that's exactly what she did in Alcaraz! 'I don't blame her for that. She will have a lot of fun playing with Carlos.'

Revealed: How Premier League fixtures are decided including THREE golden rules
It feels like the season only finished two minutes ago, but we will already be able to start building up to the next one on Wednesday morning, when the new fixtures are released. For the first time in eight years Premier League fans will see their side take on Sunderland, after the Black Cats joined Burnley and Leeds in earning promotion back to the top-flight. Liverpool will also be eagerly eyeing up their own fixture list, working out where the crunch games will come up in their bid to retain the Premier League title, with Arsenal and Man City likely hell bent on stopping Arne Slot's side. It may seem like the lists come out a little early, however Premier League officials have revealed that the process actually takes around six months, given the amount of data that goes into compiling the fixtures. The task, carried out by a French company, Atos, who are based near Paris, sees data entered into the system, such as the dates of international windows and European club games, before coming up with the list. That job becomes even harder with nine Premier League sides set to play in European competitions next term. Tottenham join Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Newcastle in the Champions League, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace will play in the Europa League, while Nottingham Forest enter the Conference League play-offs. That's sort of to be expected, but there are also other factors such as proximity between clubs on certain days and policing capacity to take into consideration, to ensure resources are not so thinly spread. In this sense, larger metropolitan areas with more than one club become a problem, such as Manchester, Liverpool and London. With the former two northern cities, Man City and Man United and Liverpool and Everton are not permitted to play on the same day at home, while London's greater resources - and number of teams - mean that is not such an issue therein. However there are three golden rules which cannot be broken when it comes to producing the fixture list. Firstly, teams must play three home games and two away games, or vice versa, in a five-game span; teams cannot have a four and one situation either way. Similarly, no side is allowed to begin or end the season with two home or two away matches. And lastly, teams aren't allowed to play home or away twice within the Christmas period, during Boxing Day and New Year's Day. A list is then produced based on all these mitigating factors, after teams have been paired up in a grid to determine home or away status, which is reviewed manually by Atos and officials from both the Premier League and the English Football League. After all that, if any errors still exist, then the system is repeated, with a brand new set of games being produced, and so on until a list is approved and officially rubber-stamped, to be announced in late June.
