T.D. Jakes stepping aside as lead pastor at The Potter's House megachurch in Dallas
A major shakeup is coming to one of the biggest churches in Dallas, as Bishop T.D. Jakes announced Sunday he's handing over leadership of The Potter's House congregation to his daughter and son-in-law.
The emotional announcement comes months after Jakes had a massive heart attack while delivering a sermon on stage at the church.
'You have been faithful to God, and you have been faithful to me,' T.D. Jakes told the congregation during Sunday morning's service at The Potter's House. 'And I'm so grateful.'
Holding back tears, Bishop T.D. Jakes thanked his church family and announced he's stepping down as head pastor of The Potter's House. His daughter and son-in-law, pastors Sarah Jakes Roberts and Toure Roberts, will take over as soon as July.
'I'm grateful, I'm honored, as your daughter,' said Sarah Jakes Roberts. 'I'm so happy you're going to get some rest.'
T.D. Jakes founded The Potter's House in 1996. The church said this move had been years in the making, but it came just months after a near-tragedy.
During a sermon in November, Jakes was hospitalized after having a massive heart attack on stage. He told NBC's TODAY show that doctors said if he'd arrived five minutes later, he would have died.
'I cannot afford, especially after November, to risk something happening to me and you be sheep without a shepherd,' said Jakes.
Members of the congregation said they were left feeling a mix of emotions after the announcement.
'I was sad, it's hard to replace an icon like Bishop, I mean, it's just hard to do that,' said Patrick Moore. 'It's actually impossible to do that, so very sad.'
Church members told NBC 5 that although losing a pastor who's impacted the community for years hurt, they hoped the change would help The Potter's House into the next generation.
'Transition is always tough, in anything we do, it's a tough thing,' said Moore. 'So I have trepidation about it, but it's still an exciting time too.'

It crashed at the end of the runway of the local airport. The aircraft experienced an 'unknown issue' before it crashed into trees. Pictures from the scene show the mangled wreckage with the plane split in two. Six of the 20 people on board were rushed to the hospital. Meanwhile the others on board were treated at the scene, as reported by the NBC affiliate WSMV-TV. Officials revealed no one was killed in the plane crash. Locals were urged to stay clear of the airport in the immediate aftermath of the crash. National Transportation Safety Board investigators and federal aviation chiefs have already launched a probe. A string of plane crashes have already been reported across the US this year. In January, an American Airlines plane carrying 67 people collided with a Black Hawk helicopter before both aircraft plunged into the freezing Potomac River in Washington DC. CLUSTER OF CRASHES All sixty-four people on the passenger plane, including passengers and crew, perished in the crash that left the aviation industry reeling. The crash was America's deadliest air disaster in almost 24 years. Days after the collision over the Potomac, a medical jet crashed and burst into flames in Philadelphia, killing seven people. More than two dozen people were injured and the impact saw rows of homes torched. The plane came down just 30 seconds after takeoff. The plane, carrying a girl who had just undergone surgery, was flying back to Tijuana, Mexico, and was set to stop in Missouri. In April, six people were killed in a plane crash in New York. Top neurologist Michael Groff and his wife urogynecologist Dr. Joy Saini were among the victims. Recent college graduate James Santoro and his girlfriend Karenna Groff were also killed in the tragedy. The couple died just months before they were set to get engaged. Last month, rocker Daniel Williams, best known for starring in the group The Devil Wears Prada, was among six people killed in a plane crash in San Diego. Hours before the crash, he shared a picture that showed him sitting by the controls of a private plane. Talent agent Dave Shapiro was also named among the victims. Kendall Fortner and Emma Lynn Huke, both of whom were booking agents, also died, as did mom Celina Marie Rose Kenyon, 36. Meanwhile, the impact of the plane crash saw eight people injured and 10 homes damaged. 3 Pictures show the aircraft split in half as investigators cordon off the scene of the crash Credit: AFP

Ed Sheeran at the top of Benny Blanco and Selena Gomez's wedding guest list

The couple got engaged in December after over a year of dating and although they haven't yet set a date for their nuptials, the 37-year-old groom-to-be admitted he's already invited his friend and collaborator, who he has previously worked with on the likes of 'Shape of You', 'Castle on the Hill', and Justin Bieber's 'Love Yourself'. Speaking on the Australian TV show 'Today', Benny said: "I just told him, 'I'm going to have a wedding and you're going to come to the wedding. "Eventually Ed will come to our wedding when we do have one, but unfortunately we have not scheduled one yet - but we will!" After Benny and Selena got engaged, they created songs that eventually ended up on their first joint album, 'I Said I Love You First', which was released in March, but they had never deliberately planned to make such a project together. Speaking about how their LP came to fruition, Benny said: "We just started making music in our house as a little fun activity and then all of a sudden we had one song, then two songs, then three songs, then four songs. Article continues below "She was just a joy to work with and it was better to work with her than anyone else because, at the end of the day, I get to kiss her too.'" During the recording process, a bird caused Benny and Selena to fight. Speaking to Kent 'Smallzy' Small on the latest episode of the 'Smallzy's Surgery' podcast, he said: "The biggest fight we had making the record is we did it at home, and there were birds that would chirp only when she was recording and never any time else. "And I didn't believe her for the first two weeks." Selena recently revealed she does not like to refer to Benny as her fiance. Appearing with her partner on the 'Table Manners' podcast in April, the 32-year-old singer explained: "[Calling him my fiance is] so strange. "I just say, my partner or Benny. But the other day, I caught myself saying 'Well, my boyfriend ...' but that's not quite why we're there." And after he and Selena shared their first kiss, Benny knew he wanted to "have a baby" with his lover. Appearing on Spotify's 'Countdown To' series in March, he said: "I knew right after we kissed, I was like, 'Oh wow. I'm probably going to marry this person'. Gretchen Whitmer says she spoke to Trump after he said he was considering pardoning men who plotted to kidnap her
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Tuesday that she spoke to President Donald Trump after he said last week he was considering potentially pardoning the men who plotted to kidnap her. 'I will just confirm that I have connected with the president directly on this subject and made my thoughts known," Whitmer told reporters at an event in Detroit, according to her office. "Beyond that, I'm not going to share more about our conversation but hopefully he'll take some of those things into consideration when he makes a decision," she said. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed later Tuesday that Trump and Whitmer, a Democrat, had spoken. She declined to disclose any additional details about the conversation but said, "I will reiterate what he said publicly when he was asked by one of the journalists in this room in the Oval Office a couple of weeks ago about the pardons. He said it's something he would look at, nothing more, nothing less.' The president told reporters at a press event in the Oval Office that he would "take a look" at potential pardons for the men who were convicted in the kidnapping plot. "I'm going to look at it. I will take a look at it. It's been brought to my attention. I did watch the trial. It looked to me like somewhat of a railroad job," he said after a reporter asked about it. Whitmer, who has met with Trump in person multiple times this year, told NBC affiliate WOOD last week that she was 'very disappointed' that he was considering it. 'I'll be making my thoughts known to the White House and I hope they take it into consideration," she said. Over a dozen men were initially charged in the kidnapping scheme, though not all of them were tried in federal court (Trump doesn't have the power to intervene in state cases). Barry Croft Jr., who prosecutors said was the ringleader, is currently serving a nearly 20-year sentence in federal prison. A key co-conspirator, Adam Fox, was given a 16-year prison sentence.
