John Mateer's playmaking, leadership to lead Oklahoma to resurgent season
In the snake pit that is the SEC, there are always question marks surrounding the quarterback position, especially for a starter who is new to the conference.
Chris Low, who covers college football for ESPN, put together his biggest questions for each projected SEC starting quarterback heading into the 2025 season. For Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer, his familiarity with Ben Arbuckle's offense and coming off a productive season in 2024 for Washington State, make him one of the more intriguing and dynamic passers in the SEC despite the jump in competition.
On the field, he's different than the typical transfer quarterback being plugged into a new system because his offensive coordinator at Washington State, Ben Arbuckle, came with him. It's imperative that the Sooners play well around Mateer and that they protect him better than they protected the quarterback this past season. They allowed 50 sacks, which was tied for the most in the country. - Low, ESPN.
Mateer has been in the spotlight plenty this offseason, as one of the projected top-tier quarterbacks in America this year. He was chosen to represent the Sooners at SEC Media Days and is already one of the trusted leaders in the locker room, despite only being on campus for a few months.
Moving to the SEC from WSU will be a big jump in competition for Mateer. However, he's reiterated time and time again this offseason that he believes in the hard work he's done over the course of his career and that he also believes in the lessons he learned in 2024 as a first-time starter.
Oklahoma's hopes rest squarely on Mateer's broad shoulders heading into this fall. We're about to find out if he has the goods that Sooner Nation hopes he brought with him from Pullman.

Spike Lee's Colin Kaepernick Docuseries Dropped by ESPN
Source: Bruce Guthrie Photos/Marlon Stewart In a surprising turn of events, ESPN has decided not to air Spike Lee's highly anticipated docuseries about Colin Kaepernick, citing 'creative differences' as the reason for the cancellation. The project, which was set to explore Kaepernick's protest movement against racial injustice and his subsequent departure from the NFL, will no longer move forward under ESPN's banner. The docuseries, produced by ESPN Films, was announced with much fanfare as a deep dive into Kaepernick's activism and the impact of his decision to kneel during the national anthem in 2016. However, ESPN, Kaepernick, and Lee collectively decided to halt the project. In a statement to Reuters, ESPN confirmed the decision, while Spike Lee, bound by a non-disclosure agreement, refrained from sharing further details, simply stating, 'It's not coming out.' The project, which began production in 2022, featured interviews with numerous public figures and journalists. Despite the cancellation, ESPN has reportedly allowed the filmmakers to shop the documentary to other platforms, leaving the door open for its potential release elsewhere. Timing and Context We care about your data. See our privacy policy. The cancellation comes shortly after ESPN's acquisition of the NFL's media assets, including the NFL Network, in exchange for a 10% ownership stake in ESPN. This deal, valued between $2.5 billion and $3 billion, has raised questions about the network's editorial independence. However, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell assured ESPN employees that the network's coverage of the league would remain unaffected by the deal. Reports from 2024 suggested that disagreements between Kaepernick and Lee over the direction of the film may have contributed to the project's demise. While the exact nature of these creative differences remains unclear, they underscore the challenges of balancing artistic vision with the complexities of Kaepernick's story—a narrative that has sparked both admiration and controversy. Colin Kaepernick last played in the NFL in 2016, the same year he began kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality and systemic inequality. His actions ignited a national conversation about social justice but also led to his departure from professional football. In 2019, Kaepernick settled a collusion grievance against NFL owners, further cementing his status as a polarizing figure in sports and activism. While the cancellation of this docuseries is a setback, it may not be the end of the road for the project. With its compelling subject matter and the involvement of a filmmaker as renowned as Spike Lee, the documentary could find a new home on another platform. For now, fans of both Kaepernick and Lee will have to wait to see if this story will eventually be told. SEE ALSO Spike Lee's Colin Kaepernick Docuseries Dropped by ESPN was originally published on

De'Von Achane injury update: Dolphins RB sidelined with calf issue
De'Von Achane is set to be sidelined as the preseason winds down. Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel revealed on Monday that the running back is dealing with a calf injury – a follow-up to the news that he first shared on Saturday. The Dolphins running back was said to be dealing with a soft tissue lower-body injury. McDaniel made the announcement following the team's preseason Week 2 win in Detroit, adding that they would evaluate Achane following their return to Miami. While the team didn't seem concerned about the running back's availability going forward, it is notable that he'll be missing time with just weeks to go until the regular season kicks off. Here is the latest on Achane. De'Von Achane injury update Achane is dealing with a calf injury and will likely be held out of practice this week, according to McDaniel. He added that the decision to keep Achane out of practice would be "preventative in nature," primarily because of the explosive athlete that he is, according to ESPN. McDaniel previously expressed on Saturday that Achane would miss somewhere between "days and weeks," but was optimistic about his availability for the regular season opener on Sept. 7. The trickiness of soft tissue injuries complicates matters for Achane's eventual return even though the running back's ailment isn't considered to be severe. Achane's absence opens the door for Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon II to battle for the starting job. Dolphins RB depth chart Miami's running back room continues to shuffle players during the preseason. Achane is the clear starter, but now has a soft tissue injury that can be problematic going forward. The team already lost Alexander Mattison for the season after he injured his neck in the first preseason game. Mattison underwent neck surgery following the contest, officially ruling him out for the year. That has left Wright and Gordon to battle for that coveted second spot on the depth chart, with Gordon being the more efficient of the two thus far. Gordon, a sixth-round pick out of Oklahoma State, is a different style of running back than what the Dolphins typically feature under McDaniel. A bruising, powerful runner, he can give the team a new dynamic and might be forced into more action than initially thought.
