Sihle Lonzi, Member of Parliament for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and President of the Student Command, has criticised Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities, Mmapaseka Steve Letsike. He accused her of misunderstanding the principle of separation of powers and "clowning" in her response to derogatory comments made by podcaster Macgyver "MacG" Mukwevho.
Reacting on X (formerly Twitter), Lonzi said: 'This ANC Minister is CLOWNING. There are three SEPARATE arms of the State. The Executive, the Legislature (Parliament) and the Judiciary. A Minister, representing the Executive cannot 'summon' anyone to Parliament. If you are going to grandstand, at least be smart about it!'
This follows a public outcry over MacG's comments on Podcast and Chill, where he crudely speculated about the reasons behind media personality Minnie Dlamini's past break-ups, saying, 'maybe her coochie smells or something.'
Deputy Minister Letsike condemned the remarks as 'nauseating in its vulgarity' and labeled them as online gender-based violence.
'This incident is not a harmless joke or casual banter – it is a harrowing demonstration of online gender-based violence,' she said.
She pledged to escalate the matter to various regulatory bodies, including the Commission for Gender Equality and the South African Human Rights Commission, and to pursue legal avenues under laws such as the Cybercrimes Act and the Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Act.
Letsike said: 'Women cannot be reduced to vulgar slurs and the objectification of the female body. This is a damaging reinforcement of gender-based disrespect and consequently violence.'
Meanwhile, Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Communications has entered the fray, raising broader concerns about the unregulated growth of podcasting in South Africa.

SAHRC believes there's prima facie evidence that Gayton McKenzie violated Equality Act

CAPE TOWN - The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) believes there's prima facie evidence that Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has violated the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act (PEPUDA). The commission has received several complaints against McKenzie for old social media posts that resurfaced after he indicated he would sue podcasters for disparaging remarks made against coloured people. The SAHRC has now sent an allegation letter to McKenzie before determining its next course of action. While McKenzie said that his social media posts and comments had been taken out of context, the human rights commission said it had opened an investigation into these posts and McKenzie's alleged xenophobic utterances. In a statement, the commission said that depending on the response it received from McKenzie, it might institute proceedings against him in the Equality Court. "The commission wishes to remind members of the public that the right to freedom of expression is not absolute." The commission said that given McKenzie's position as a minister and a member of Parliament, his conduct is expected to conform to ethical standards. In response to the human rights commission letter, McKenzie said the truth would emerge.

Eunice Mgcina nominates Dada Morero for chair in a shift of alliance

ANC Greater Johannesburg regional powerhouse Eunice Mgcina has nominated Dada Morero (above) for the position of regional chairperson ahead of the much-anticipated elective conference set to take place in September. Photo: X In a branch general meeting in Ivory Park on Monday Mgcina, who serves as the Johannesburg member of the mayoral committee for development planning, appeared to have shifted her allegiance from 'The Woman On Top' faction with which she was associated in 2022. At the regional conference that year, Mgcina went up against Morero for the position of chairperson, losing by 10 votes. After the ward 20 branch chairperson opened the floor for nominations on Monday, Mgcina suggested Morero for the position. 'Thank you very much, chair, my name is Eunice Mgcina and I am here to nominate the name of comrade Sello Enoch Dada Morero as a chairperson of the region,' she said to much jubilation. Morero, who tops the nomination list for the chairperson position, is being challenged by former deputy regional secretary Two weeks ago, the Mail & Guardian reported that early internal surveys suggested a dip in Morero's support in some parts of the region and the party's top provincial leadership, although several senior branch leaders who support him rejected the polls as 'premature'. Things appear to have shifted significantly in the past two weeks. Here are the internal supports, as of 18 August, for the leaders in the five positions being contested: Chairperson Dada Morero, former regional chair — 57.4% Loyiso Masuku, former deputy regional secretary — 42.6% Deputy chairperson Alex Masilo — 37% Eunice Mgcina — 15% Regional secretary Lebogang Tshabalala, former regional secretary of the ANC Youth League — 17% Deputy regional secretary Lerato Bob — 21% Treasurer Bonolo Ramokele, former City Power board chairperson — 26% A source told the M&G that, if Mgcina wanted to further her ambition to become the deputy chair, she would have to align with Morero. Midrand, where Mgcina comes from, is the second biggest Morero's support comes from Soweto and he is strongly backed in Midrand. According to at least two sources, Midrand had resolved to support Morero for chair and this forced Mgcina to rethink her alliance. One source said Mgcina was told the Midrand region would not support her if she ran for chairperson. 'She knows we resolved to support Dada. In exchange, Dada's people will then vote for our candidate for deputy chair. Our candidate for deputy is Eunice,' the source said. In February, the M&G reported that a source in the Regional Executive Committee (REC) said those aligned to Morero would use his name to advance their slate, which would probably see them elected. 'It's highly likely that those who will align with the chair will emerge. He has the support on the ground and also has the support of most of those in the REC,' the source said. The source added that it was likely Masuku would run for the deputy chair position, which would cause tension in her camp, saying that with Mgcina being in the same camp, and enjoying support in her zone, her name had been preferred for the deputy chair position. 'Eunice is from Midrand, which is one of the biggest zones; those people have made it clear that they want something, and the deputy chair position is the one they are aiming for,' they said. 'They will not advance the name of Loyiso because they want their candidate. This will further divide them.'

ANC's Gigaba, Mchunu in hot water for 'casting aspersions on the character and unity' of party

CAPE TOWN - African National Congress (ANC) national executive committee members, Malusi Gigaba and Senzo Mchunu, are in hot water for recent utterances the party perceives to be decampaigning against it. The party said it disapproves of the pair's recent conduct and public statements, which violate the ANC's internal communications protocol. Last week, Gigaba said he thought the start of the National Dialogue should be delayed, while over the weekend, Mchunu suggested the ANC could face its end if support continues to decline at the polls. As tensions swirled between legacy foundations and the Presidency last week over the haste to convene the National Convention, ANC MP Gigaba said he thought the dialogue should be delayed to avoid it becoming another talk shop. Meanwhile, speaking at a tombstone unveiling in KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend, suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu suggested the ANC was on the brink of collapse and that the next elections could spell its death knell. The ANC has taken a dim view of these comments, saying the pair acted outside of any sanctioned organisational mandate in making these remarks. Spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu said their remarks also do not reflect the views of any legitimate structure of the party and are seen as an opportunistic assault on its image and credibility. "These comrades are casting aspersions on the character and unity of the ANC, portraying the organisation as divided, incoherent and collapsing. These actions serve only the strategic agenda of counter-revolution and weakens the people's confidence in their movement. No disciplined comrade would, out of their own volition, make statements that embolden forces that have long sought to reverse the gains of our revolution," reads an ANC statement. The party said it would take steps to stop members from making statements that undermined its established protocols and internal cohesion.
