Ethereum surges past $2,700, but THESE warning signs tell a different story

ETH's $2.7K breakout triggered a short squeeze, but rising exchange reserves signal weakening momentum
Ethereum's decoupling from Bitcoin raises concerns about sustainability, with L2s and retail participation faltering
Ethereum's [ETH] break above the $2,700 mark shocked the market, triggering over $50 million in short liquidations on Binance alone.
But beneath the surface, there's something a bit more complex: rising Exchange Reserves and notable whale outflows suggest that the bullish momentum may be losing steam.
At the same time, Ethereum's recent price decoupling from Bitcoin – once seen as a sign of growing strength – now raises fresh concerns about sustainability and direction for the broader Ethereum ecosystem.
Short squeeze ignites as ETH breaks $2.7K
Ethereum's surge past the $2,700 resistance level triggered a sharp liquidation event on Binance, wiping out over $50 million in short positions, according to CryptoQuant data.

This zone, highlighted as a liquidity cluster on the Liquidation Delta chart, became a magnet for stop-loss orders as ETH pierced through.

However, that squeeze was immediately followed by over 144,000 ETH flowing into Derivatives Exchange Reserves—a red flag. Such inflows typically precede renewed short positioning, not trend continuation.
While the bulls briefly claimed victory, the rapid inflows and heatmap pressure suggest caution may be warranted amid the initial euphoria.
Ethereum-Bitcoin correlation collapses
For years, Ethereum and Bitcoin moved in near-lockstep, often sharing a correlation above 0.7. But that relationship has nearly evaporated.
According to CryptoQuant, ETH's 1-year Correlation with BTC plunged to just 0.05 as of the 22nd of May – down from 0.63 at the start of the year.

This sudden decoupling disrupts one of the crypto market's most consistent patterns, forcing a reassessment of traditional portfolio strategies.

More critically, it coincides with ETH's relative underperformance during Bitcoin's rally.
Decoupling dampens momentum
Ethereum's divergence from Bitcoin is eroding market confidence. Without the tailwind of synchronized BTC rallies, Ethereum's ecosystem is struggling to sustain growth.
Retail participation appears to be thinning, and leading L2s like Optimism, Arbitrum, and Polygon have failed to gain traction in 2025. Forecasting models that once hinged on Bitcoin's directionality are losing predictive power.
Ethereum may be evolving into a more autonomous asset driven by internal fundamentals, but that independence risks isolating it during bull cycles.
For now, the decoupling seems to be more just wind than evolution.

Silk Road's Ulbricht receives 300 BTC donation

-- Ross Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road, has received a donation of 300 Bitcoin (BTC) from an anonymous source. This donation, tracked by blockchain firm Lookonchain, was sent to Ulbricht's wallet early on Sunday. At the time of the transaction, the donated coins were valued at approximately $31.4 million. The transaction was followed by a transfer of the majority of these coins to the cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, as indicated by data from Arkham. This happened within a few hours of the initial donation. Ulbricht, who was pardoned and released from prison by President Donald Trump on January 21, made his first public appearance since his release at the Bitcoin 2025 conference over the weekend. His life sentence was fully and unconditionally pardoned by the former president, following his conviction for creating and operating the Silk Road, a notorious online marketplace for illicit goods. Ethereum Co-Founder Credits Michael Saylor for Crypto Treasury Firm Nudge

(Bloomberg) -- Long-time crypto advocate and Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin says he was swayed into launching a firm to invest in the network's native currency about six-months ago by the best-known advocate of stockpiling digital tokens. Billionaire Steve Cohen Wants NY to Expand Taxpayer-Backed Ferry Where the Wild Children's Museums Are Now With Colorful Blocks, Tirana's Pyramid Represents a Changing Albania The Economic Benefits of Paying Workers to Move NYC Congestion Toll Brings In $216 Million in First Four Months 'I was at a dinner with Michael Saylor, I did a little bit of research, I started talking to my colleagues about how cool it could be,' Lubin, the founder and chief executive officer of Ethereum software infrastructure provider Consensys, said in an interview. 'Nobody in our company had done a deep dive on it. We saw, hey we don't see anything overly dangerous in the strategy.' The eye-popping returns the software firm formally known as MicroStrategy has registered since Saylor decided in 2020 to turn the company into a leveraged Bitcoin proxy have captivated both Wall Street and individual investors. The outsized premium shares of the now-named Strategy command over the value of its Bitcoin holdings has spurred a surge in so-called crypto treasury companies seeking to emulate Saylor's success. Last week, the sports betting and gaming technology firm SharpLink Gaming Inc. said it would become a Ether treasury company, with Lubin serving as chairman of the board. SharpLink has closed a $425 million private placement to purchase Ether for its treasury. The fund raise was led by New York-based Consensys. Share of SharpLink surged about 400% following the May 27 the announcement, and ended last week up around 1,000%. The stock had tumbled more than 50% annually in the last three years. Lubin expects to raise additional capital to fund purchases of Ether, which is the second-largest cryptocurrency by market value after Bitcoin. 'There will be ways for us to take in more capital for us to buy more Ether,' Lubin said, citing Saylor's strategy of issuing shares and convertible bonds. 'We'll do that in a prudent way, we'll not take excessive risk.' The key is not to become over-leveraged, Lubin said. 'We anticipate that our actions and similar actions will drive a huge amount of demand for Ether,' said Lubin, who said other firms are looking at Ether treasury strategies as well. While Saylor has been promoting Bitcoin as digital gold, the marketing message behind Ethereum — crypto's commercial highway, with thousands of gaming and lending apps — has been more garbled. Some investors shifted to only investing in Bitcoin, which has gained about 11% so far this year. Ether is down about 26%, even after a rally following its latest software upgrade. Lubin believes Ether deserves better. 'Essentially there's a paradigm shift on, to a more decentralized global economy,' Lubin said. 'It shouldn't be hard to believe that Ether will be a big part of that paradigm shift.' Lubin downplayed concern that the crypto treasury strategy is just the latest ploy to make a quick buck in crypto, similar to the pump-and-dump schemes that have plagued the sector since its early days more than a decade ago. 'I've never been looking to exit anything in the Ethereum ecosystem, we are builders, not exploiters,' Lubin said. 'We expect there will be years, possibly decades of growth in our ecosystem. We expect Ether growing enormously valuable.' Treasury companies holding Ether will be able to stake it — basically, use the coins to secure the Ethereum network and earn yield. 'We anticipate that there will be a number of vehicles like this that are well intentioned,' Lubin said. Wells Fargo sees rise of companies holding Bitcoin on balance sheets

-- Wells Fargo says Bitcoin is entering an 'institutional phase,' marked by the emergence of a new category of companies—what it calls 'Bitcoin Treasury Corps'—that are using capital markets to amass large Bitcoin holdings. 'Bitcoin is becoming institutionalized,' the firm wrote in a note, pointing to an expanding group of firms 'that use the capital markets to build bitcoin holdings.' Following the success of Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), Wells Fargo highlighted three new Bitcoin Treasury Corps with political ties: Cantor/Tether's Twenty One, Vivek Ramaswamy's Strive, and David Bailey's Nakamoto. Together, these groups may raise as much as $25 billion. While Coinbase's inclusion in the S&P 500 is seen as 'a key symbolic milestone,' Wells Fargo argued that 'more important in our view is the growing number of Bitcoin Treasury Corps being minted.' The rise of spot Bitcoin ETFs has also accelerated institutional exposure. ETFs have attracted $136 billion in assets under management just 16 months after launch, including $11 billion in year-to-date inflows to BlackRock's IBIT, currently fourth among all ETFs. But Wells Fargo sees even greater impact ahead. 'If ETFs are a bridge between investment capital and bitcoin, the flood of new bitcoin treasury corps may become an even bigger source of AUM,' the note said. 'Strategy, the pioneer in using equity markets to fund a bitcoin treasury, is setting its sights on the $300 trillion global bond market with STRK and STRF,' said Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo believes this effort to tap the $300 trillion global bond market 'might be the most underappreciated bitcoin story of 2025.' The firm expects more Bitcoin Treasury Corps to emerge as long as public markets continue assigning a premium to their Bitcoin holdings.
