Whoopi Goldberg Praises New ‘Superman': 'I Forgot What Kindness Looked Like'

Yahoo10-07-2025
While Fox News hosts, Dean Cain and right-wing commenters are decrying James Gunn's new Superman as 'woke,' The View's Whoopi Goldberg praised the movie's kinder, gentler take.
With the film's stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan visiting the ABC talk show today, Goldberg spoke about her reaction to seeing a screening of the movie. Although neither she nor the guests directly addressed the MAGA backlash, Goldberg and Corenswet applauded Gunn's approach.

Goldberg said her initial reaction to the first scenes, she 'felt [herself] myself getting annoyed, and I couldn't figure out what was happening. And what it was was I forgot what kindness looked like, and I kept waiting for Superman to become quippy, and he's not that. He's never been that.
'So I fell in love with you as Superman. Chris Reeve was a friend, and so [the new movie] allowed me to just kind of question myself. Why didn't I recognize the kindness? I was waiting for you to turn into somebody you had never been. I know it sounds crazy, but it knocked for a loop because I thought, Oh, that's right. He's nice and he's kind and he's different.'
Asked by Goldberg what he hopes people take away from the film, Corenswet, who plays the title character, said, 'It might be too much to ask, but just what you described about looking inward and wondering, Is there something more I could be doing? Could I be a little kinder to people? Could I take a little more responsibility for myself, my family, my loved ones? Could I be somebody who shows up in a moment of crisis or uncertainty and say, I'll take care of this situation.'
The Superman kerfuffle started when Gunn told The Times U.K., 'I mean, Superman is the story of America. An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.'
The comment drew ire (real or performative) from some conservatives. Fox News host Greg Gutfeld said the superhero has 'a woke shield,' and Laura Ingraham tweeted, 'Another film we won't be seeing.' Donald Trump supporter and Lois & Clark Superman Dean Cain told TMZ, 'How woke is Hollywood going to make this character? How much is Disney going to change their Snow White? Why are they going to change these characters [to] exist for the times?'
The Warner Bros. film, which opens in the U.S. on July 11, currently has an 85% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and is expected to see a $200M global start at 60,000 global screens.

‘The Naked Gun': What Happens In End-Credits And Post-Credits Scenes?

Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson's The Naked Gun has end-credits and post-credits scenes that you may want to stick around for, especially if you're a fan of the original Naked Gun movies and Police Squad! TV series. Directed by Akiva Schaffer (Saturday Night Live) and produced by Seth McFarlane, The Naked Gun opens in theaters nationwide on Friday. In the film, Police Squad Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. (Neeson) follows in the bumbling footsteps of his late father, Lt. Frank Drebin Sr. (Nielsen). Nielsen, of course, originated the role of Drebin in Police Squad!, which had a six-episode run on ABC-TV in 1982. After that, Drebin's character leaped to the big screen with The Naked Gun: From The Files of Police Squad! in 1988, followed by the sequels The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear in 1991 and The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult in 1994. The new version of The Naked Gun continues the same comedic pattern as Police Squad! and the original Naked Gun trilogy with plenty of sight gags, slapstick and base humor. Anderson stars as Beth Davenport opposite Neeson's Frank Jr. in The Naked Gun, as the pair attempt to bring down tech billionaire Richard Cane (Danny Huston) for murdering Beth's brother to obtain a computer device for nefarious intentions. Rated PG-13, The Naked Gun also stars Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy and Eddie Yu. Note: The next section reveals spoilers of what happens during the end-credits and post-credits scenes for "The Naked Gun." The End Credits For 'The Naked Gun' First Recall A 'Police Squad!' Gag Generally, end-credits and/or post-credits scenes either wrap up loose ends from earlier in a film or signal the potential for a sequel. As such, the post-credits scene alludes to a scene earlier in The Naked Gun, but the end credits scenes don't necessarily indicate that another movie is on the way. That doesn't mean a sequel won't happen. It's just like any other movie, The Naked Gun's future depends on the film's reception at the box office. The first end credits scene gives a big nod to the end credits of the Police Squad! series, which mocked freeze-frame endings of sitcoms at the time. The only thing is, the frame didn't freeze during the end credits, and instead Nielsen and his co-stars would remain still in their poses for the duration. The end credits for the new Naked Gun begin with a shot from the newly reopened Police Squad headquarters, which was shut down by the city's mayor due to Frank Drebin Jr.'s wreckless actions. However, thanks to Drebin's heroic actions, Frank Jr.'s boss, Chief Davis (CCH Pounder), announces at a press conference that Police Squad's office headquarters is reopening. While speaking, Chief Davis told reporters Drebin would be held accountable for all of the crimes he committed while pursuing Richard Cane and that he was undergoing an Internal Affairs investigation. The scene then cuts to an Internal Affairs gathering, which is essentially one big party set at a tropical resort. While Frank Jr. and Beth are conversing, the film goes into freeze-frame mode, a la Police Squad! and the two hold their poses. However, when they take notice of their strange surroundings, Frank Jr. and Beth unfreeze and start to examine the frozen characters and the environment they're stuck in. The scene ends with Frank Jr. and Beth breaking the fourth wall and starting to talk to the audience, with Frank Jr. eventually attempting to poke his way through the big screen. The second end-credits scene is not really a scene, but more of an homage to the opening of Nielsen's Police Squad! series and Naked Gun movies. Each of them began with a shot from the viewpoint of the top of a police squad and a single flashing emergency light as the car drives around the city. The scene ends in front of a doughnut shop, which, of course, alludes to the cliché that all police officers have an affinity for doughnuts. Following the second end-credits scene, the credits continue to roll as we hear Neeson singing a racy song ballad, 'My Sweet Beth,' which was written by director Akiva Schaffer and songwriter Greg Chun (Don't be surprised if Paramount Pictures submits the tune for Best Original Song consideration during awards season). The post-credits scene wraps up a scene from earlier in the film, where 'Weird Al' Yankovic appeared in a promotion for a 'Doomsday' party that was meant to take place once Richard Cane exacted his plans for himself and a group of fellow billionaires to start a new version of society. The post-credits scene shows Yankovic — who played himself in cameos for the first three Naked Gun movies — playing in front of a bunch of empty chairs at a celebration meant for the billionaires before Cane's plans went off the rails. The Naked Gun opens Friday in theaters nationwide.

The Golden Bachelor's Mel Owens Offers Mea Culpa for ‘Insensitive' Comments About Older Women: ‘I've Learned a Lot'

The new star of The Golden Bachelor was a little tarnished by recent comments he made about dating older women, but he's trying to make amends. In a new interview with Glamour, Mel Owens — who is set to star in the second season of ABC's senior dating competition — confronts the backlash he received when he said in a podcast interview in June that he'd eliminate any contestants age 60 or older. (Owens is 66, for the record.) More from TVLine Matt Damon and Ken Jennings Risk It All on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire - But Did They Win Big? ABC Moves Up Premiere Date for 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Nashville and Grey's Anatomy Joshua Jackson Admits He's 'Bummed Out' by Doctor Odyssey Cancellation: 'It Was a Really Fun Show' Owens is now backtracking on those comments, saying they 'were a mistake by me. It's unfair. It's insensitive… and I want to earn it back.' Owens is currently two weeks into shooting his season of The Golden Bachelor, and he reveals he apologized to the women as well: 'When I first walked in, I addressed it. I apologized to them. I said, 'It was unfair, insensitive. I want to earn it back. Just give me the chance.'' The women on Owens' season are in their 60s, he says, and he was 'absolutely shocked' at how 'active' and 'brilliant' they are. (ABC has not yet revealed the women competing in Mel's season.) They also got a little revenge on him, he hints: 'One of the dates was a roast. It was brutal. They were killing me… It was good because I earned that, and I took it and I deserved it, and it landed squarely on me.' Owens blames his controversial comments on his lack of familiarity with the show: 'I didn't know the age range because I wasn't watching it. I'm thinking, to me, the age range was 45 to 60. That's my age range. I'm thinking that's the gold years for me.' He also says he preferred younger women because 'my reference… was when I was dating at 39, 40. I hadn't dated in 26 years, so I had no clue.' He hopes fans who wrote off the show after his comments will give it another chance: 'Hopefully the show will show that the women that are in their golden years, that are doing these amazing things. It's inspirational.' The experience so far has been 'life-altering' for him, he adds: 'I've learned a lot.' Owens' season of The Golden Bachelor premieres Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 8/7c on ABC. Gary Busey pleads guilty to sex crime, admits it was 'not an accidental touching'

Gary Busey pleaded guilty to a sex crime Busey, 81, pleaded guilty to one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact connected to accusations from the Monster-Mania Convention on August 13, 2022. "It was not an accidental touching," Busey confirmed in court Thursday, according to Court TV. The actor's additional charges were dismissed. Busey had been charged with two counts of criminal sexual contact in the fourth degree, in addition to one count of attempted criminal sexual contact. He now faces one to five years of probation plus fines. Fox News Digital reached out to Busey's representative for comment. Busey's criminal defense attorney, Blair Zwillman, told People magazine that in order for the judge to accept the guilty plea, "there has to be a factual basis where he admits the offense. He had to admit that it was non-consensual." "This was the best disposition for him. He's glad to put this behind him. He is basically a family guy. He is not a criminal," Zwillman told the outlet. Busey first denied the sexual misconduct allegations after the news broke in 2022. "No, I don't carry any regrets with me ever. None of that happened." According to the actor, there was "a partner and a camera lady, and me and two girls were the only ones in there." Busey claimed the entire encounter "took less than 10 seconds, and they left. Then they made up a story that I assaulted them sexually, and I did not." The "Buddy Holly" star insisted, "Nothing happened. Nothing. It was all false." He was also asked if there was any chance the actor had possibly been inappropriate and just unaware of his actions, to which he replied, "No, not inappropriate at all. I have eyewitnesses there." At the time, Monster-Mania released a statement saying the convention was "assisting authorities in their investigation into an alleged incident involving attendees and a celebrity guest." "Immediately upon receiving a complaint from the attendees, the celebrity guest was removed from the convention and instructed not to return. Monster-Mania also encouraged the attendees to contact the police to file a report," the post stated.
