Michael Clarke's emotional message after cricket legend goes public with sad news
Clarke joined host Gerard Middleton and NSW Origin coach and Raiders legend Laurie Daley in 2020, saying at the time: "It's a show that I have always listened to growing up. My father listens every morning. I always stayed across it during my playing days and I love the fact I have the opportunity to talk about all racing and sports, not just cricket. I think the consistency of being on radio Monday to Friday allows the Australian public to get to know me better."
The show returned for 2025 on Thursday, with Middleton paying tribute to his former colleague. "At long last we're back but, of course, not all of us," he said. "Today we will farewell 'Pup' (Clarke), our mate.
"After five years on the Big Sports Breakfast, he's off to do his own thing in podcasts, commentary, balancing family. We certainly wish him well, and he'll be sorely missed in our studio. It's even weird right now looking at the chair between Loz and I and Pup's not there." Daley added: "It's disappointing Pup won't be a part of the team this year (but) he's got plenty going on in his own life, and we wish him all the best."
Clarke has been on year-to-year contracts for the past couple of years, dodging numerous controversies along the way. The ex-Test skipper can be a polarising figure but joined the team on air on Thursday to thank the audience for giving him a shot.
"I just wanted to come on and use this opportunity to thank the listeners for accepting me on breakfast radio," he said. "I hope a lot of people just got to know me a fraction more.
"When I was playing cricket for Australia, it's dictated what media you do and you get pushed and shoved in certain directions. (Radio) has given me a chance to show a bit more of myself, whether that's a good or bad thing. One thing I do know about being on air five days a week – you can't hide who you are."

Raiders Shockingly Predicted to Cut Ties With New Fan Favorite
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Las Vegas Raiders fans did not have a whole lot to be excited about last season, but there were a few bright spots in the midst of the Raiders' 5-12 campaign. We all know about tight end Brock Bowers, and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers posted the first 1,000-yard season of his career. But there was another weapon that emerged last in the year: running back Sincere McCormick. More news: Colts Could Trade Anthony Richardson to Struggling AFC Opponent As a whole, Las Vegas' rushing attack was an abject disaster in 2024. Zamir White was a massive disappointment, and Alexander Mattison led the team with just 420 yards on the ground. But McCormick showed some serious promise during the second half, particularly in a three-game stretch between Weeks 12 and 14 when he registered 175 yards on 32 carries, good for a 5.5 rushing average. McCormick was then knocked out for the remainder of the campaign after suffering an injury in Week 15, but not before making a serious impression on Raiders fans. Photo byWell, Tashan Reed of The Athletic does not seem to think McCormick's impression was as equally effective on Las Vegas' organization, as he is predicting the Raiders to cut ties with the 24-year-old before the regular season. More specifically, Reed has McCormick losing out to Dylan Laube. "I gave Laube the edge over McCormick for the fourth spot because he has greater special-teams value," Reed wrote. More news: Former NFL Star Fires Strong Accusation at Indianapolis Colts It's entirely possible that McCormick was just a flash in the pan last year, but it's also difficult to ignore just how good he looked during that three-game stretch. He also enjoyed a terrific collegiate career at UTSA, racking up over 1,400 yards in back-to-back campaigns to end his NCAA tenure. The Raiders drafted Ashton Jeanty and signed Raheem Mostert in free agency, which will certainly make it difficult for McCormick to get serious touches in 2025. But keeping him off the roster entirely might be a mistake for Las Vegas. For more on the Raiders and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.

Passion for the Raiders a Stuart family affair
Jed Stuart has had father Ricky's passion for Canberra ever since he was a kid. Back in the day, the younger Stuart would dread going to school after a Raiders loss in case his emotions took over and made him want to fight the classmates taunting his father's team. But that passion doesn't mean Ricky's son would take it personally if the coach chose to replace him with Savelio Tamale on the run to NRL finals. The rise of Stuart Jr. has been one of many success stories in the nation's capital this season. The former Australian rugby sevens representative has managed seven games, and four tries, on the left wing for the ladder-leading Raiders amid Tamale's knee injury, with Canberra winning six of those. "You've been dreaming about playing NRL your whole life, then finally doing it and actually getting a good stint of games, it's unreal," Stuart told AAP. THE DEBUTANT 🔥Raider #404 Jed Stuart scores on debut!#WeAreRaiders — Canberra Raiders (@RaidersCanberra) June 20, 2025 On the surface, Stuart and his father appear cut from different cloths, with the older a freakish halfback in his day and the younger a rangy winger some 20cm taller. But in his heart, Jed Stuart carries the love for the Raiders that has become synonymous with his father. "His passion for the club rubs off on me, especially at home," the 24-year-old said. "Our whole family loves it here. I'm not to the extent where I'll get emotional talking about little things like he does, but I care a lot." That's always been the case since late 2013, when the Stuart family moved back to Canberra so Ricky could take his dream job: coaching the club where he won three premierships. "I used to dread going to school after a loss, because I'd be so passionate and they'd be giving it to me. I'd want to get in a fight but I'd hold myself back," Jed Stuart said with a smile. But these days, the younger Stuart knows how to keep his emotions in check, and will remain level-headed as his father weighs up a big selection call on the wing in coming weeks. Tamale had been in the rookie of the year conversation before being struck down by a knee injury in round 14 and is expected to be available in the coming weeks. Stuart knows it could be the first time he's had a tough selection chat with his father. "It'll probably be hard on him but I'll take none of it personally," he said. "Whoever the coaching staff pick to go there will do a job, which I think is what me and 'Savie' have both proved. "We're there to do a job and we've both done a pretty good one. If he goes in over me and whatnot, I'm happy with what the coaching staff have picked. I just want the team to win."

We hit 19 in our Raiders countdown to kickoff. Who wore it best and who's wearing it now
We've reached 19 days until the Raiders season opener at Foxboro against the Patriots, With our countdown at 19 days we take a look at who currently dons the number in Silver & Black and who has brought it the most distinction. No. 19 Who's wearing it now: WR Tommy Mellott Mellott was one of the Raiders sixth round picks. He played quarterback at Montana State and led the Bobcats to the FCS National title game. But his best shot at the NFL level is as a wide receiver and special teams ace. The learning curve is steep though, so he has a ways to go in his position change. Who wore it best: QB Cotton Davidson Davidson joined the Raiders in 1962. The journeyman QB started the season in place of Tom Flores who was out with Tuberculosis. He and Flores split QB duties over the next two seasons, with Davidson making the Pro Bowl in 1963. They would split duties again in 1966, this time with Flores making the Pro Bowl.
