SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – Sioux City West forward Vera Grom and Western Christian forward Kaden Van Regenmorter earned our SportsZone Basketball Player of the Week honors after helping their respective teams pick up wins to cap off the regular season.
The Wolverines' senior scored her 1,000th point on Tuesday, part of a 31-point performance in the team's win at Sergeant Bluff-Luton on Tuesday.
Grom added 13 points in the team's win over Spencer on Friday, a cultivation of her hard work and improvement as she takes part in her senior year.
'That was pretty exciting, and it's just a lot of good for years. I think it really shows how hard I've worked and my parents and I really excited about it and my teammates as well,' Grom said.
'Being able to coach her and just seeing her success as the season has continued has been amazing,' Sioux City West head coach Tanya Meyer added.
The Wolfpack senior followed up a double-double in Western Christian's win against Spirit Lake with a 30-point night in the team's 89-86 2OT win over Sioux Falls Christian.
As Western Chrsitian enters the playoffs, Van Regenmorter and company are focused on the journey ahead.
'For us it's just win as many games as we can, that's the ultimate goal. Whether that means scoring a lot of points, or making a lot of assists, or playing hard defense, whatever it is, our ultimate goal is to win the game,' Van Regenmorter mentioned.
''We know he's going to have to bring our best. For as long as we keep playing, as long as that is, we know that he's going to have to play well and we know he's going to be a key factor that other teams are factoring in on, too. But he's ready for that. He has had a lot of game experience,' Western Chrsitian head coach Derek Keizer added. He's very mature for who he is and what he has to handle, all that pressure. We expect big things out of him because he expects it out of himself.'
Sioux City West girls basketball hosts Council Bluffs Jefferson on Wednesday night in the IGHSAU 5A-Region 3 quarterfinals.
Western Christian boys basketball hosts Rock Valley in the IHSAA 2A-District 16 bracket on Thursday night.

Chaminade's Krasner and American Heritage's Rich are Broward 4A-1A Players of the Year

American Heritage's Jordan Rich made a choice to commit full-time to baseball. He was one of the most dynamic players in Broward County long before he even made that decision. Spencer Krasner, a former teammate of Rich's at Heritage, was one of the most outstanding pitchers in the state long before making the decision to transfer to Chaminade-Madonna. Both ended up having career seasons this year for their respective teams. And so, Krasner is the Miami Herald's Broward County Pitcher of the Year for Classes 4A-1A while Rich is the Herald's Player of the Year for that same group. Krasner, a dominant left-hander and University of South Carolina commit, went a perfect 9-0 on the mound this past season, striking out 100 batters in 59 innings and compiling an 0.95 ERA. Krasner, who had already been a vital part of a state championship team at American Heritage as a freshman and state runner-up team as a sophomore, led Chaminade to a 24-5 record and a district championship. Although the Lions were eliminated in a best-of-3 Region 4-2A quarterfinal series by Miami Westminster Christian, Krasner threw a three-hitter, striking out nine for Chaminade's lone win in the series. Krasner had five games where he struck out 12 or more batters and eight games where he struck out eight or more. Krasner figures to be a potential MLB draft prospect in addition to his potential opportunity to become an impactful pitcher in the Southeastern Conference in college. Rich, formerly a standout on the Patriots' football team, is developing into one of the most versatile players in the state and showed it this season while guiding Heritage to its second state title in three seasons. 'I really feel really great about the decision to play baseball, and wish I had made the decision even sooner,' Rich said. 'I couldn't be happier.' Rich, a senior outfielder, hit .393 and showed his power with seven home runs and eight doubles; his consistency as he drove in 26 runs; and his speed as he stole 38 bases. A Miami-Dade College signee for baseball, Rich also showed his resilience returning from a season-ending injury last year to become a full-time starter on a state championship team. 'Two years ago, that 2023 state championship team, I feel, was similar to this team,' Rich said. 'It was a group of selfless guys who gelled at the right time and everything clicked. We just wanted to prove to ourselves we could do it. That's how we approached this season and ultimately finished it.'

State Tournament preview: Eureka, Lexington, LeRoy, Notre Dame seek titles

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — Four area high schools could be celebrating state championships this weekend. Eureka and Lexington are heading to the state baseball finals in Champaign. Leroy is headed to Peoria for state softball and Notre Dame to Naperville for the girls soccer state tournament. Eureka is at the state baseball tournament for the first time since 2013 when it finished fourth. The Hornets face Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin in the class 2A semifinals at 4 p.m. Friday at Illinois Field on the campus of the University of Illinois. In their last 11 games, the Hornets (34-4) have posted three shutouts and have only allowed 20 total runs. Pitching and defense have been their calling card, but having the big bat of Mason Stoller in the middle of the lineup doesn't hurt either. 'He's a big dude for us,' said senior Ben Lapp. 'He gets clutch hits in big spots, big hits. And he's good at base running too.' Stoller has 49 hits and 49 RBI in 38 games. 'Every time I go up to bat, it's see ball, hit ball,' Stoller said. 'When you get up to bat, you just can't think. You just have to go.' Lexington is at the state baseball finals for the first time in 35 years. Lexington won state in 1990, its only other trip to state. 'It's been crazy but we're going to win it all,' said senior Jaxson Goodrich. 'The last team that won the sectional championship (won state). That's what we're competing with, they won it all. We've got to do it.' Lexington (19-11) plays defending state champ Ottawa Marquette in the class 1A semifinals Friday at 10 a.m. 'The baseball fields have been dead for a while (in Lexington),' coach Tanner Schieber after his team beat Salt Fork, 5-3, in the super-sectional Monday to earn a trip to state. 'To get a crowd out like this. Hope to see them all again Friday morning at 10 A.M. Bringing Lexington baseball back is huge.' Leroy is headed to the state softball tournament for the second time in three years. The Panthers (34-5) will face Dakota in Friday's 12:30 p.m. class 1A state semifinal at the Louisville Slugger Complex in Peoria. 'I feel a lot more comfortable going over (to Peoria) this year. Last time there were a lot of unknowns,' said LeRoy coach Doug Hageman. LeRoy finished third at state in 2023, the only previous trip to state for the program. 'Now we kind of have an idea of what to expect,' Hageman said. 'I don't know if that'll make a difference or not but we are so excited to be going back.' The Notre Dame girls soccer team is headed to state for the 12th time in school history but the Irish are still looking for their first championship. And although the team is 25-1-1, coach Ben Ralph thinks his squad still hasn't played its soccer of the season. 'We've been phenomenal defensively. We just need to figure it out offensively a little bit,' Ralph said. 'We haven't played a full 80 (minutes). Hopefully that's this weekend.' Notre Dame plays Springfield in the 2A state semifinals Friday at 2:30 at North Central College in Naperville. Junior Ava Lafollette scored three times in the second half as PND beat previously undefeated New Lenox Providence Catholic, 3-0, in the super-sectional Monday. 'There's a lot of mental toughness to stay locked in for 80 minutes. We focus on that. Especially (in the super-sectional),' said junior Abigail Chaddock. 'The first half didn't go the way we wanted. But we stayed locked in for the whole game and got three goals in the second half.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
