Western Christian's Kaden Van Regenmorter named SportsZone Boys Basketball Player of the Year
HULL, Iowa (KCAU) – Our 2025 SportsZone Boys Basketball Player of the Year winner is Western Christian's Kaden Van Regenmorter. The senior guard was an instrumental piece in the Wolfpack's second-consecutive IHSAA State Championship, leading the team in scoring at 19.2 points per game. We made the trip up to Hull to visit with the Morningside commit and surprise him with our award. 'It's really cool. The personal accolades are really cool, but I think without these guys it would not be possible,' Van Regenmorter said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Nationwide strikes in Greece bring flights, ferries to a standstill
Nationwide strikes brought Greece to a standstill on Wednesday as major trade union federations from the private sector and public service demand substantial wage increases. The strikers are pushing for more pay as Greece is among the EU's laggards in terms of real wages and purchasing power. The strikes have severely impacted tourists, with ferries remaining moored in ports and both domestic and international flights cancelled due to air-traffic controllers joining the walkouts. The timing is particularly frustrating for travellers, occurring one and a half weeks before the Easter holiday, which marks the start of the tourism season. Unusually, the date of Greek Orthodox Easter coincides with the Western Christian one this year. Many tourists have had to rebook flights, were stranded on islands or at airports, or could not travel as planned. The air-traffic controllers' strike, initially set to be banned by the courts due to the start of the holiday season, was declared legal by a judge late on Tuesday evening. Airports and airlines had already cancelled all flights in anticipation. Greece's economy is now performing well after years of financial crisis. The International Monetary Fund recently praised the country's progress, noting that its economic growth — currently over 2% — significantly outpaces the EU average. However, the IMF also cautioned that sharp wage increases could fuel inflation. This leaves the government in a difficult position: although the economy is improving, many citizens have yet to feel the benefits.

Sioux City West's Grom, Western Christian's Van Regenmorter earn SportsZone Basketball Player of the Week honors
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – Sioux City West forward Vera Grom and Western Christian forward Kaden Van Regenmorter earned our SportsZone Basketball Player of the Week honors after helping their respective teams pick up wins to cap off the regular season. The Wolverines' senior scored her 1,000th point on Tuesday, part of a 31-point performance in the team's win at Sergeant Bluff-Luton on Tuesday. Grom added 13 points in the team's win over Spencer on Friday, a cultivation of her hard work and improvement as she takes part in her senior year. 'That was pretty exciting, and it's just a lot of good for years. I think it really shows how hard I've worked and my parents and I really excited about it and my teammates as well,' Grom said. 'Being able to coach her and just seeing her success as the season has continued has been amazing,' Sioux City West head coach Tanya Meyer added. The Wolfpack senior followed up a double-double in Western Christian's win against Spirit Lake with a 30-point night in the team's 89-86 2OT win over Sioux Falls Christian. As Western Chrsitian enters the playoffs, Van Regenmorter and company are focused on the journey ahead. 'For us it's just win as many games as we can, that's the ultimate goal. Whether that means scoring a lot of points, or making a lot of assists, or playing hard defense, whatever it is, our ultimate goal is to win the game,' Van Regenmorter mentioned. ''We know he's going to have to bring our best. For as long as we keep playing, as long as that is, we know that he's going to have to play well and we know he's going to be a key factor that other teams are factoring in on, too. But he's ready for that. He has had a lot of game experience,' Western Chrsitian head coach Derek Keizer added. He's very mature for who he is and what he has to handle, all that pressure. We expect big things out of him because he expects it out of himself.' Sioux City West girls basketball hosts Council Bluffs Jefferson on Wednesday night in the IGHSAU 5A-Region 3 quarterfinals. Western Christian boys basketball hosts Rock Valley in the IHSAA 2A-District 16 bracket on Thursday night. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
