Ali Keating reveals 'delight' at taking reigns of mum's horse

Extra.ie06-07-2025
Showjumper Ali Keating said she is 'delighted' to be taking the reins of her mother's prized pony as she gears up for the Dublin Horse Show.
Ali, 19, the youngest daughter of Ronan and Yvonne Keating, was speaking as she prepares to appear at the RDS on her mother's 'favourite child' Captain next month.
She told Extra.ie: 'This is my third year competing in the Dublin Horse Show. I first did it when I was 12 or 13, then I was in it in 2023, and I am back again this year with Captain. Ali Keating. Pic: Evan Doherty
'Captain is mom's horse. We got Captain in 2022 for mom, and then I just took over the reins a little bit to compete with him.'
An accomplished rider herself, Yvonne now prefers trotting out on her pony in the countryside rather than entering the competitive showjumping arena.
'Mom gets to ride Captain out in the winter, which she prefers. So it is lovely for me to be able to take over the reins from her,' added Ali 'Captain is special, just because he's mom's horse, he's like the miracle child. He's the favourite child,' she laughed. 'Like me, Missy and Jack, we don't get a look in. Captain is mom's baby. Ali Keating. Pic: Evan Doherty
'So to get to show him and to get to jump him is incredible.'
Ali said excitement is building in the Keating household ahead of the RDS Horse Show, which takes place this year between August 6 and August 10.
'It's very exciting. It's what we all look forward to. I mean, I'm not looking forward to going on holiday; I'm just looking forward to Horse Show week. And because it's every year, we get to see everyone there, and the whole equestrian community comes together.'
In addition to preparing for the prestigious equestrian event, Ali is also preparing to enter her third year at Maynooth University, where she studies psychology and criminology.
'I am probably looking more into the sports psychology side of it, dealing with the riders, because it is a very mentally and physically draining sport.
'There are such highs, but there are also extreme lows. It is blood, sweat and tears. I've seen it myself first-hand – what it can take to get out here on those days when you just feel like you're wondering why you're even doing it.
'You're questioning the early mornings, the late nights, the freezing cold, the rain. But then, you know, you come to the Dublin Horse Show.
'We spend money and time and do everything for the horses. And it can all come crumbling down within a few hours. It is mentally a tough sport, but we all love it, and that's why we're all still doing it.'

PICTURE EXCLUSIVE: Noel Gallagher has rocked out of his hotel and is rollin' his way to Croke Park.

Rock n' Roll has officially started in Dublin as Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher has just left his hotel and has made his way to Croke Park ahead of tonight's first of back-to-back Irish gigs, can exclusively reveal. Manchester musician Noel, was flying solo as he departed five star Carton House Country Manor Hotel in Maynooth this afternoon. Dressed in his trademark casual garb, Noel was wearing a bright blue windbreaker, over a plain white teeshirt, dark grey skinny jeans, white trainers and a pair of blue shell sunnies. A chirpy Noel smiled and waved to the delight of Carton House staff, who escorted him to his waiting Ranger Rover and waved him off, as he made his way to Dublin City Centre. Pic: Michael Chester/@chesterpix And despite being a globally feted superstar Noel was decidedly down-to-earth as he hopped into a waiting blacked out Range Rover with just one driver as the pair zoomed out of the grounds of Carton House to make their way to Dublin City Centre: Over on the very far side of the capital, Noel's singer brother Liam, is still kicking back at the swanky Powerscourt Hotel and has not, as yet, departed the hotel for Croke Park. So with Noel on route and Liam not far behind him, Oasis mania has reached boiling point around Croke park and in Dublin City Centre, with fans of the band breaking out into impromptu renditions of the groups greatest hits, in beer gardens and boozers around town. Oasis are set to take to the stage in Croke Park tonight at 8.15 with the concert coming to an end at 10.45. As Oasis famously sang,'So Sally Can Wait' – Noel, in particular, is ensuring that fans won't be waiting much longer. Check out tomorrow's 'Irish Mail on Sunday' for more exclusive celebrity pix and backstage Oasis concert news.

Oasis brothers Noel and Liam staying in separate hotels during Croke Park weekend

Oasis brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, who are due to take to the stage at Croke Park in a few mere hours, for the first of their two Irish sold-out gigs have checked into separate hotels at opposite ends of the city, can reveal. As Oasis mania grips the capital, the Gallagher brothers are currently hanging out at their respective hotels before they prepare to depart to the stadium for tonight's gig. Noel checked into Maynooth's Carton House, while Liam is staying at the super luxurious Powerscourt Hotel in Wicklow. The extensive Oasis entourage officially touched down in Dublin on Wednesday evening, as they travelled over from the U.K in a fleet of UK-registered blacked-out Mercedes G Wagons with a significant security detail. Musical siblings Liam and Noel, who have only recently reconciled after a bitter years-long feud, have obviously decided that sleeping under the same roof is perhaps a step too far. Pic: AFP STRINGER/AFP via Getty Images Industry sources have told that the band are split between different hotels for the duration of their Dublin dates. 'Liam is staying at one hotel with half the band, and Noel is staying at a completely different hotel with the other half.' Additionally has learned that a well-known City Centre boozer has been booked to host the official after-party on Sunday night. Pic: TikTok 'The lads manager has booked a pub in town for the afterparty on Sunday,' said a source. 'He has been in with the bar manager two times already to make all the necessary arrangements. 'So everything is in the works. But it's strictly a private party for the band so security will be very very tight.

Groundbreaking AR theatre experience returns to Dublin for one night only

A historical and groundbreaking Augmented Reality (AR) theatre experience is returning to Dublin after wowing audiences with their 7 Deadly Sins show. BadaBoom, created by Irish playwright and technologist Niall Austin, is a world-first fusion of gaming and live theatrical storytelling, with the e-play set to land in Tallaght's Civic Theatre on August 28. Created in partnership with Maynooth University, the audience will use a mobile app to become 'active participants' in the theatrical experience with the live performances. In a radical break from tradition, the production invites the audience not to put their phone away, but rather to pick it up and shape the drama. Pic: Supplied It's an Irish affair too, with Peter Smith of Code Red and Moonlight: The Phil Lynott Show, starring as weathered hitman Frankie Caruso who spent his life in the shadows taking lives on behalf of others. When he begins to recount his past to Eliza Vale, a sharp and eager biographer played by Abigail Hawk of Blue Bloods fame, the façade he constructed begins to crack. As the story's twists and turns are recounted, the audience becomes more than just witnesses, they become players, as they battle Frankie's demons through the gaming app and shape the story as the story progresses, with the audience being visually transported through stunning graphics and an emotional plot using the immersive theatre. 'BadaBoom is not just an emotional and thrilling story, it is a dynamic experience which offers the audience a new frontier in live entertainment – where technology, narrative and performance marry together create an unforgettable stage show,' the show's creator, Niall Austin, said. 'Live entertainment is constantly evolving and this one-night-only stage show is Irish audiences' first look at what will be a global phenomenon, enhancing theatrical experiences.' BadaBoom reaches the Tallaght Civic Theatre on August 28, with tickets costing €15.
