Hedley Studios and Bugatti Collaborate on One-of-One Bugatti Baby II
Hedley Studios, formerly known as The Little Car Company, has partnered with Bugatti to craft a unique, one-of-one Bugatti Baby II, a modern tribute to the automaker's storied past. Designed in collaboration with Jascha Straub, Bugatti's Manager for Sur Mesure and Individualisation, the bespoke vehicle pays homage to the brand's 115-year heritage through meticulous craftsmanship and artistic detail.
The Bugatti Baby II, a three-quarter-scale, fully drivable electric reinterpretation of the iconic Type 35 race car, features a striking duo-tone finish of 'Nocturne' black and 'Giallo Midas' yellow. This color scheme was personally favored by Ettore Bugatti and has adorned legendary models such as the Type 57 Grand Raid Usine.
Straub's involvement in the project extends beyond design aesthetics. His deep appreciation for Bugatti's legacy is showcased through intricate, hand-drawn sketches etched onto the body panels, depicting key moments and figures from the brand's history, including the Château Saint Jean, Ettore and Jean Bugatti, and their famed racing machines. Finished with a fine layer of clear-coat, these illustrations are permanently preserved on the Baby II, elevating it to a work of automotive art.
The vehicle's interior features black leather from 'Bridge of Weir,' a nod to Bugatti's commitment to luxury. Another subtle reference to Ettore Bugatti's lesser-known passion for horses is woven into the design, further enriching the car's connection to the founder's inspirations.
'This partnership with Bugatti and Jascha Straub has seen the Bugatti Baby II reimagined in a way that commemorates the heritage of the marque,' said Ben Hedley, Founder and CEO of Hedley Studios. For Straub, the project was an opportunity to infuse his knowledge and artistry into a piece of Bugatti history. Bugatti Is Sold Out Until 2029
The automotive industry is volatile. Emerging technologies, changing government regulations, tariffs, and fickle consumer trends make planning for the next model year a Herculean effort of hope and stress. It's why so many automakers play it safe with their products, but there are outliers, like Bugatti . Demand for the brand's newest hypercars is so high that any potential buyers will have to wait years for their car, if they can order one at all. And that's good for the bespoke automaker. Bugatti's design director, Frank Heyl, told CarBuzz that the brand has so many orders that it makes it easy for Bugatti to 'plan ahead.' 'It's all set,' he said. Heyl told the publication that finishing up Bolide production and beginning to build the Tourbillon would keep it busy for the next four years and that it's sold out until 2029. 'If you have this [financial stability] as a business owner, it works out very solid,' he said. That gives Bugatti plenty of time to figure out what comes after the Tourbillon , a hybrid hypercar with three electric motors and an 8.4-liter V-16 engine. It makes 1,800 horsepower , which can propel the car to 60 miles per hour in just 2.0 seconds. It also costs around $4 million to start, but good luck getting one. If you have the cash for that kind of performance, and haven't already placed your Tourbillon order, you'll have to set a reminder for 2029 to see what Bugatti cooks up next. The company has plenty of time to figure it out, and we're already excited to see it. This Bugatti Divo Was Showcased at the Petersen Automotive Museum. Now It Could Fetch $9 Million.
When the 1,500 hp Bugatti Divo was named Robb Report's Best of the Best in the Hypercar category for 2019, we described it as 'a four-wheeled hyperbole . . . as elusive as it is superlative.' Those words are equally relevant today, as the Divo remains a milestone in combining straight-line performance with lateral dynamics. On August 15, one of the only 40 examples made will mark the model's debut at auction when it crosses the block through Bonhams|Cars. Nearly as noteworthy is that it's being offered without reserve. The car's coverage in our award-themed June/July print issue six years ago quoted Bugatti's then-president, Stephan Winkelmann, who stated, 'I wanted to test my team, and myself, to develop more emotional performance and a completely new design,' regarding the missive for developing the Divo. 'We wanted to highlight the sporty side.' What sets the Divo apart is its 1,005 pounds of downforce—198 pounds more than the Chiron—and lateral acceleration that can deliver 1.6 g. According to Bugatti's press release at the time, these all factor into the Divo beating the Chiron by eight seconds at the Nardò circuit in Italy. To realize this enhanced level of athleticism over the Chiron, the Divo's chassis, steering, and suspension were fine-tuned for greater responsiveness, and aerodynamic improvements included new front and rear diffusors and a wider, adjustable rear spoiler. Fittingly, the model's emphasis on control while being pushed to the extreme is reflected in the selection of its name, an homage to racer Albert Divo. A driver for the marque's factory team from 1928 through 1933, Divo won the Targa Florio endurance race back-to-back during that period. This example of the model has had only two stewards since leaving the factory in Molsheim, France. It has also been showcased at the Petersen Automotive Museum's 'Hypercars: The Allure of the Extreme' exhibition, which ran from December of 2021 until May of 2023. In 2024, it was acquired by the consignor, who has ensured that less than 800 miles have been put on the odometer in total. 'Here at Bonhams|Cars, we are delighted to be the first auction house globally to bring to market one of the rarest hypercars ever produced, the Bugatti Divo,' says Bonhams specialist Louis Frankel. 'It is incredibly rare that anyone ever has the opportunity to see one, let alone purchase one, so being able to bring this car to market is hugely exciting.' Yet this Divo is not the only exquisite automotive outlier that Bonhams|Cars will showcase at the Quail Auction during Northern California's upcoming Monterey Car Week. Among the over 100 lots being presented, the Divo is one of 24 cars comprising what Bonhams has dubbed the Future Classics Collection—contemporary apex automobiles—all being offered without reserve. Included in what's estimated to be a roughly $30 million assemblage is a 2021 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport expected to fetch up to $4.25 million, a 2017 Pagani Huayra Roadster with a high-end estimate of $3.6 million, and the 2022 Apollo Intensa Emozione 'Ocean Dragon' valued at between $2.5 million and $3.5 million. Miniature classic car-maker Hedley Studios revs up rescue deal
A company which makes miniaturised electric versions of classic cars has secured a rescue deal led by an American merchant banking group. Sky News understands that the future of Hedley Studios - formerly known as The Little Car Company - has been salvaged through a pre-pack administration deal. FRP Advisory is understood to have acted as administrator before selling the business to an entity controlled by Island Capital Group. Hedley Studios was founded in 2018, when luxury car-maker Bugatti approached Ben Hedley to see if he could recreate a 1920s Type 35 racing car at half-scale to mark its 110th anniversary. In a statement issued in response to an enquiry from Sky News, the company said it had built and delivered more than 500 vehicles to clients in more than 60 countries in the last 17 months. Hedley Studios manufactures its cars at three-quarters the size of the original model, with the resulting vehicles typically costing £75,000 or more. "We're thrilled to welcome Island Capital Group as a strategic partner in the next phase of Hedley Studios' growth," Mr Hedley said. "Its investment and belief in our vision mark a pivotal moment for the company as we accelerate our expansion and reach new global audiences. Hedley Studios makes its cars in partnership with a range of luxury manufacturers, including Aston Martin, Bentley and Ferrari. Andrew Farkas, founder, chairman and CEO of Island Capital, which initially backed Hedley Studios in 2023, said: "This latest investment is testament to the entrepreneurial spirit of Ben and his team in building a successful British luxury brand in a short period of time.
