USA Track and Field Championships 2025 — Jefferson-Wooden, Bednarek blaze to 100m titles
Rising US star Jefferson-Wooden produced a scintillating display of controlled sprinting in the women's 100m at Eugene's Hayward Field, scorching over the line in a world-leading 10.65 seconds.
Jefferson-Wooden's time put her into elite company, tied alongside Marion Jones, Shericka Jackson and reigning 100m world champion Sha'Carri Richardson as the fifth-fastest woman ever.
The 24-year-old from South Carolina now looks the firm favourite for the World Championships in Japan, where she will be chasing her first major title, following a 100m bronze medal at the Paris Olympics last season.

'I've been dreaming of days like this, and it's finally starting to come true,' Jefferson-Wooden told reporters, adding that she was still pinching herself at vaulting up the all-time 100m list.
'It's surreal. It doesn't actually sound real. You look at all these races, all these amazing women who have accomplished these things — me being part of that list is actually kind of crazy.'

Meanwhile, in the men's race, two-time Olympic 200m silver medallist Bednarek dominated the field to win in 9.79 seconds, ahead of Courtney Lindsey, who was second in 9.82 seconds.
T'Mars McCallum was third in 9.83 seconds while Trayvon Bromell was fourth in 9.84 seconds.
'I'm happy with the time, happy with the performance,' Bednarek said. 'I definitely have way more in the tank. I already knew I was in this kind of shape – I just needed to let one rip, and I did.'
Cramping drama
Bednarek revealed, though, that his race had nearly unravelled after he began cramping mid-race. He said he had scarcely had time to react to the problem before powering home.
'When something like that happens, you say 'Screw it, I'm going,'' Bednarek said. 'You just gotta keep going.'
However, there was disappointment for 2019 world champion Christian Coleman, who finished fifth and missed the Tokyo qualification places.
Coleman qualified for Friday's final just hours after news emerged girlfriend, Richardson, had allegedly assaulted him at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Sunday.
Elsewhere on Friday, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone hinted she is ready to carry her dominance of the 400m hurdles into the 400m flat with an imperious victory in the opening heats.
The 25-year-old has been unbeaten over the 400m hurdles since 2019, winning back-to-back Olympic gold medals as well as a 2022 World Championship gold.

However, McLaughlin-Levrone is focusing on the 400m at the US Championships, apparently opting to skip the 400m hurdles at the Tokyo World Championships.

While McLaughlin-Levrone is looking forward to Saturday's final with confidence, her 2021 Olympic 4x400m relay teammate Athing Mu-Nikolayev was heading home.

Mu-Nikolayev, who won Olympic 800m gold in Tokyo and followed it up with a world title a year later, was eliminated in her 800m semifinals.
The 23-year-old looked comfortable in the opening round on Thursday, qualifying second fastest, but could do no better than fourth on Friday in a time of 1 minute and 59.79 seconds.
Despite the setback, which ended her hopes of qualifying for the World Championships, Mu-Nikolayev is optimistic she can compete at the highest level again.
'I think that's helpful for what I need going for (the) next couple of years. Everything's not going to be pretty, everything's not going to be perfect,' she said.

Former Olympians hunt for next batch of stars at Agnel Ashram
Former great and Olympian Joaquim Carvalho trains young hockey players at Fr. Agnel Multipurpose High School, Verna Panaji: Former Olympians Mervyn Fernandis and Joaquim Carvalho were on hand as Fr. Agnel Multipurpose High School and Agnel Ashram, Verna, ushered in a new beginning through the launch of the hockey training programme as part of the curriculum for students of Class II and Class III. The hockey programme witnessed nearly 90 students from Class II and III listen eagerly to the advice from the former Arjuna Award winners. Fernandis and Carvalho are among the legends of Indian hockey with the former winning gold at the Moscow Olympics and two silver medals at the Asian Games. Carvalho, part of the Indian team at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, won silver at the Delhi Asiad and later coached the national team. Fernandis was all praise for the priests at Agnel Ashram for this initiative that is expected to act as a blueprint for grassroots development of hockey, particularly in South Goa. He was in awe of the changing landscape of the institute in Verna that has seen the laying of a new hockey turf. 'The priests of this school have proved that it is not just about words, but deeds as well,' said Fernandis. 'Today, we not only have a top-class hockey facility here, but we also have our children training seriously with an eye on a hockey career in the future. Ever too keen on supporting hockey in his native Goa, former Indian captain and coach Carvalho was hopeful of seeing at least a few of the children as future Olympians. 'I am convinced that August 4 will be a red-letter day, not just for Agnel Ashram Verna, but for the entire state of Goa simply because a dedicated group of sportspersons have put their hearts and minds together to lay a future pathway for these young players,' said Carvalho. The initiative is the brainchild of Fr. Agnelo Gomes, director of the Agnel Technical Education Complex. The program has been integrated into the school physical education curriculum, so that the students don't have to stay after school or return in the evening. Coach Anselm Gabriel will be overseeing the entire coaching programme. He will visit the school three times a week, with the sessions being worked out from 8.50am to 10.15am.

NBA trade rumor: De'Aaron Fox signs 4-year, $229M extension with San Antonio Spurs through 2030 season
De'Aaron Fox extended his contract with the San Antonio Spurs (Image via Getty Images) After signing with the San Antonio Spurs at the February NBA trade deadline, popular player De'Aaron Fox has inked a new contract with the team. The star and the team reached an agreement for a four-year contract extension worth a maximum of $229 million. Rich Paul, CEO of Klutch Sports, informed ESPN that the maximum contract guarantees the player's future in San Antonio through the 2029-2030 season. De'Aaron Fox commits to San Antonio Spurs with a massive extension worth $229 million According to a source, De'Aaron Fox has consented to a maximum contract extension with the San Antonio Spurs. He was traded to the team in February of last year. The management has further invested in him now that he has committed to a four-year, $229 million agreement with the team. He previously inked a $163 million, five-year contract with the Sacramento Kings. After the 2025-2026 season, he would have been a free agent under that deal. A few months after he joined the San Antonio Spurs, he once stated that he had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the team over the offseason. On the other hand, the San Antonio Spurs made it apparent that they wanted the NBA player to stay with them for a long time, even though they already have two talented young players in their backcourt. An executive of the team told Spotrac's Keith Smith in July: 'When we made that trade, we knew what the contract status was, of course… We see De'Aaron as someone who can grow with our young players and be a real leader for us. We're hopeful we can make something happen to keep him in San Antonio for a long time.' De'Aaron Fox in action (image via Getty Images) De'Aaron Fox will, however, reach a new financial level with his new contract, as his average yearly compensation of $57.25 million would rank third in the league. He only played 18 games for San Antonio Spurs before being sidelined for the season due to a left pinky injury. He was also teamed with Victor Wembanyama , one of the league's top young players, with the hopes that the two may help the S.A. Spurs win their first title since 2014. Unfortunately, the management's decision to bench the icon for the home stretch of the 2024-25 season due to a blood clot in his shoulder put the team' plans on hold. Having said that, as of now, De'Aaron Fox is pretty happy with the new contract.
