MLS introducing primetime 'Sunday Night Soccer' game
January 29 - Major League Soccer is introducing "Sunday Night Soccer," a primetime matchup that will "spotlight the league's most compelling matchups," according to an MLS news release on Wednesday.
The games will stream free for Apple TV+ subscribers, and they will air up against both "Sunday Night Baseball" programming on ESPN and NBC's "Sunday Night Football" package throughout the 2025 season.
The first "Sunday Night Soccer" game of the regular season will feature expansion team San Diego FC against reigning MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy on Feb. 23.
Drawing fans in the fall against football could be a tough task for MLS, however. Heading into the 2024 season, "Sunday Night Football" was the No. 1 primetime show on TV for 13 consecutive years.
Therefore, MLS and Apple will need to bring something special to the broadcasts. In its release, MLS promised "dedicated pre- and postgame shows, enhanced production and studio programming, and bespoke graphics in English and Spanish."
MLS Season Pass broadcasters Jake Zivin, Taylor Twellman and Andrew Wiebe will call the English broadcasts, and Sammy Sadovnik and Diego Valeri will handle those airing in Spanish.
Apple and MLS are in the midst of a reported 10-year, $2.5 billion deal.

David Beckham's Inter Miami are set to star at the FIFA Club World Cup with Lionel Messi in tow, but their qualification for the revamped tournament was somewhat controversial David Beckham's Inter Miami are all set to host the FIFA Club World Cup opener with frontman Lionel Messi, but the side's inclusion in the tournament initially sparked backlash. The MLS franchise were selected as one of the 32 participating teams in October last year. The revamped Club World Cup selects top sides from across the globe to do battle over a month-long competition in the United States, and it will kick off with perennial Egyptian champions Al Ahly facing Beckham's outfit in front of an anticipated 62,000-strong Miami crowd. Inter Miami were named Supporters' Shield winners last year after amassing an MLS record 74 regular-season points. However, this did not mean they were crowned MLS champions. While the Florida-based club then progressed into the MLS play-offs, they lost in the first round to Atlanta United. Nonetheless, their place at the Club World Cup was confirmed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino under rather controversial circumstances, as the selection criteria had not been laid out at the time, and eventual MLS champions, LA Galaxy, would eventually be omitted. Co-owner Beckham once plied his trade in Los Angeles, and it was on the back of this move that, 11 years ago, the ball got rolling on the Manchester United icon investing in an MLS expansion franchise. Inter Miami began playing in 2020, and three years later, they secured the groundbreaking signing of global superstar Messi from PSG. Their purpose-built Freedom Park stadium is set to open in 2026. The marketability and pull of stars like Messi and some of his team-mates, including Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, are why many were quick to criticise FIFA's decision to hastily include Inter Miami as the host team of the Club World Cup, as they accused FIFA of favoritism. Speaking in October at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale after Inter Miami had beaten New England Revolution, president Infantino confirmed the club's qualification, and admitted: "Miami loves football, the world loves football, and the world loves Miami. So I have three things to tell you. "The first, many congratulations for winning the Supporters' Shield. And on top, with the record of points in Major League Soccer. Congratulations, you are the best team of the season in America. "Second, based on this outstanding performance of this year you deserve to be, and you will be, for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025," he revealed. "And third, as the host team of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, you will have the honour of opening the tournament by hosting the opening game here in Miami at the Hard Rock Stadium in front of 65,000 people and tens of millions at home." Chelsea and Manchester City will join Inter Miami at the Club World Cup. The English pair qualified for the competition after winning the UEFA Champions League in 2021 and 2023, respectively. Enzo Maresca's side begin their campaign on Monday against Los Angeles FC, and the Cityzens face an unknown entity in the form of 2022 CAF Champions League winners Wydad AC, or WAC Casablanca, on Wednesday. Rahm's Ryder Cup colleague and partner Tyrrell Hatton also used the word mad in build-up when he judged segments of the Oakmont challenge and had other descriptions to use as he assessed his position at the halfway point. Speaking to LIV Golf, he said: 'I mean, sometimes it feels like the greens, you have a little bit of an optical illusion, where you expect it to be so fast. 'There's so much break on it, you're putting up the slope and then it's coming with the slope, so you expect it to be really quick. So it's hard to get the line and pace there. 'But the rough is pretty brutal. It almost feels like a penalty shot when you're in it like, which is just how it is this week. 'It's hard to hit the fairways anyway because they're so slopey, and it's unfortunate that even if you land in the fairways here it can run off into the rough. That's one of the challenges I guess.' The conditions have been a challenge over the opening two days, but title contender Bren Griffin is lapping it up as he said: 'Bring it on. I'll play in anything unless it's lightning pretty much or tornados. 'Yeah, rain is tricky. It's just more of an annoyance than anything. 'I think you're managing your umbrella and maybe your rain gear and keeping your clubs dry. 'But from a swing standpoint, I don't mind playing in the rain, and obviously it softens conditions most weeks. 'It'll probably make it maybe slightly easier or maybe we'll have to start thinking about spin control a little bit with the wedges if it really rains. 'I don't really care. I'm down for whatever.'
