UAE tourism generates $12bn in hotel revenues in 2024
The hotel revenues in the UAE reached approximately AED45 billion ($12 billion) in 2024, reflecting a 3 per cent year-over-year growth, stated Abdulla Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the Emirates Tourism Council, reported WAM.
Hotel occupancy rates also climbed to 78 per cent last year, ranking among the highest both regionally and globally.
This growth was supported by the opening of 16 new hotels across the seven emirates in 2024, taking the total number of hotels in the country to 1,251 by the end of the year. In addition, the number of hotel rooms also grew, reaching 216,966 by the end of 2024, up 3 per cent.
Tourism remains a key pillar in strengthening the competitiveness and resilience of the national economy, supporting the country's transition toward an economy driven by knowledge and innovation, he noted.
He attributed this growth to the wise leadership's directives and forward-looking vision, which led to the development of sustainable policies, strategies, and initiatives that drive the sector's progress.
Al Marri added, "The UAE continues to advance its national efforts to develop innovative tourism initiatives and projects, while strengthening collaboration with all relevant local and international tourism bodies. These efforts aim to elevate the UAE's status as the best tourism identity globally by the next decade, offering world-class experiences that further enhance the country's appeal to visitors from around the world. We are also focused on diversifying special interest tourism offerings, building the sector's capacities, fostering the participation of Emirati talent, and driving greater investment across all areas of the tourism ecosystem."
He noted that the number of hotel guests across the UAE reached approximately 30.8 million in 2024, reflecting a 9.5 per cent growth. This milestone represents 77 per cent of the hotel guest target set by the 'National Tourism Strategy 2031' - achieved seven years ahead of schedule.
"With the current growth trajectory, we are well on track to achieving the strategy's ambitious goal of attracting 40 million hotel guests," Al Marri said.

Ben Sulayem Returns, FIA Presidency Bid
TDT | Manama Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the FIA's outspoken president, has confirmed he'll run for a second four-year term in December's election. Speaking at the Monaco Grand Prix, the 63-year-old Emirati said he's determined to keep growing the sport and bolstering the FIA's influence, even as his first term has stirred plenty of debate. A Mission to Grow Motorsport Ben Sulayem, a former rally driver, insists his work at the FIA is far from done. 'Three years in a complex federation like the FIA is not enough,' he said, reflecting on his tenure since succeeding Jean Todt in 2021. He's proud of turning around the FIA's finances—a €4.7 million profit last year compared to a €24 million loss in 2021—and securing Cadillac as Formula One's 11th team for 2026. But he's not resting on his laurels, vowing to make the FIA 'stronger and stronger.' Controversies and Critics It hasn't been a smooth ride. Ben Sulayem's term has seen clashes with Formula One's commercial rights holder, Liberty Media, over deals he calls 'raw' for the FIA, which owns the championship. His crackdown on driver swearing, with hefty fines, has riled stars in F1 and rallying. Staff departures, including senior figures like Shaila-Ann Rao, sparked talk of an exodus, though Rao's return as an advisor has steadied the ship. Critics also point to statute changes that could curb the FIA's audit and ethics committees, raising questions about transparency. Open to a Challenge With no confirmed rival yet, Ben Sulayem welcomed the prospect of competition, including from twice world rally champion Carlos Sainz, father of the Ferrari F1 driver. 'Let him stand. That is democracy,' he said, brushing off concerns about potential conflicts of interest. The Emirati remains unfazed by detractors, claiming he's 'cleaned up the FIA house' and shrugging off negativity. 'I am the last one who cares what they say,' he added, focused on the FIA's 147 member organizations. Concorde Talks and Future Plans As a new Concorde Agreement between F1 stakeholders nears, Ben Sulayem says negotiations with Liberty Media are on track. His goal is clear: elevate the FIA's clout while expanding motorsport's reach. With the Bahrain Grand Prix a key fixture on the F1 calendar, his regional ties add a layer of influence, but it's his broader vision that will define his campaign. Key Takeaways Ben Sulayem seeks re-election to bolster FIA and motorsport Financial Recovery: FIA's €4.7m profit in 2024 reverses 2021's €24m loss He invites challengers like Sainz, supporting open competition You Know What? Ben Sulayem, the first non-European FIA president, has overseen the addition of Cadillac as F1's 11th team, a move initially resisted by the sport but backed by the FIA's 147 member organizations.

UAE Tells Firms to Hire Emiratis by June 30 or Face Fines
The UAE's Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has called on private sector companies with 50 or more employees to meet Emiratisation targets for the first half of 2025 and achieve a growth of 1 per cent or more in the number of UAE citizens employed in skilled jobs out of their total skilled workforce by June 30. Starting from July 1, the Ministry will begin verifying the extent to which companies have complied with the set targets, as well as other related requirements, which include registering the Emirati nationals they employ with a social security fund and consistently paying the required contributions. Compliance with these conditions allows companies to avoid financial contributions, which will be imposed on establishments that violate these terms. Farida Al Ali, MoHRE's Assistant Under-Secretary of National Talents, said: 'The impressive performance we have seen in the labour market, coupled with the UAE's rapid economic growth, serve to enhance private sector companies' ability to meet their Emiratisation targets. 'This progress goes hand in hand with a well-established partnership approach between the Ministry and the Nafis programme, supporting the achievement of Emiratisation policies and targets across the private sector.' Al Ali praised the private sector's engagement with Emiratisation policies and its commitment to meeting the required targets, which has had a positive impact on this national priority. The number of Emiratis working in the private sector has reached an unprecedented milestone of over 136,000 UAE citizens employed across 28,000 companies by the end of April 2025, she revealed, asserting her confidence in these companies' ability to continue meeting their targets, particularly by taking advantage of the Nafis platform, which hosts a large pool of qualified Emirati candidates suited for the targeted jobs. Furthermore, she noted that the Ministry will continue to offer incentives and benefits to companies that achieve exceptional Emiratisation results, which include membership in the Emiratisation Partners Club. Benefits for members of the Club include financial discounts of up to 80 percent on MoHRE service fees and priority in the government procurement system, which enhances their business growth opportunities. The Ministry has developed a highly efficient digital field inspection system to detect fraudulent practices, such as engaging in 'Fake Emiratisation' schemes or attempting to circumvent Emiratisation targets. Between mid-2022 and April 2025, the system successfully flagged around 2,200 establishments found to be in violation of Emiratisation policies and decisions, and legal actions have been taken against them. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation provides various channels to report practices that violate Emiratisation policies in the private sector, including a call centre that can be reached at 600590000, in addition to the Ministry's smart application and official website.
